SMITIS is making a difference in its inaugural year. Academically, Ethan Montaner, has won the University of NSW Medal for the highest score in Year 4 in the international schools that participated in the ICAS spelling test. Andrew Tami (Distinction), Raynester Balagawi (Credit) and Leilani George (Credit) also performed well in this international exam. Professional development has been a priority in terms of improving skills and qualifications. Twelve teaching assistants have been undertaking further studies through the SMIT Community Learning Centre during 2013. By the end of Term 3, six teachers will have attended IB regional workshops in Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong. In June, all teaching staff , including assistants attended a two-day in- school workshop that focused on implementation of the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Shane Murphy from Mercedes College, Adelaide, was the workshop leader and he was impressed with how much had been achieved in six months. Junior sport is non-existent in Tabubil, so SMITIS commenced a Saturday sports program that caters for boys and girls from Kindergarten to Year 7. The talent on show has been awesome and the manner in which students play is an exemplar for sport across the globe. SMITIS also initiated interschool sport with Tabubil Primary School with a focus on skills, teamwork and fair play. Nuikick, a program that introduces students to AFL has commenced in Term 3 and, as expected, students are demonstrating outstanding skills that should lead to future PNG representation. Michael Weaver, SMITIS Deputy Principal, has been developing the natural musical ability of students, and the range of ability was on display at the Term 2 Talent Night. The school band, Wrong Direction, has since performed at the Intertown football match and stirred the crowd up into a frenzy. Meanwhile, Year 7 has produced a song, My Home, that it is expected to be available on iTunes within the next few months. On August 31, SMITIS will host and coordinate a meeting of local and district principals with an aim to foster professional collaboration and leadership development. I appreciate your support. Star Mountains Institute of Technology International SchoolOur purpose is to develop internationally-minded and life-long learners who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect, and strive to be: inquirers; knowledgeable; thinkers; communicators; principled; open-minded; caring; risk-takers; balanced; and reflective.

In June, all teaching staff , including assistants attended a two-day in-school workshop that focused on implementation of the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

SMITIS also initiated

interschool sport with Tabubil Primary School with a focus on skills, teamwork and fair play.
