The scaled down event still drew about 200 people throughout the day according to Katherine. Dona-tions to the Food Bank were being asked for at the entrance. Additionally, money from the lunch sales

were also do-nated. She tells us “The event raised approx-imately $1,000 for the St. Joseph Island Food Bank plus food donations. Special thanks to the sponsors, The Black Bear Café and The Island Market, who donated all the food for the lun-cheon so that all lunch sales went straight to the Food Bank. Thank you to all who partici-pated and made this event a success”.

Inside there were some familiar faces

(behind masks), and many people reconnected after not seeing each other for months. The small amount of vendors had a great mix of products available. Despite the lack of snow, Christmas is quickly approaching and while a lot of us are buy-ing more online, there are still many people who do like to purchase local to support those in the community and get something in hand right away. To get a better idea of how many people would come for the lunch portion, sales were done in ad-vance and held separately in the lounge away from the spaced out vendors.

The vendors we spoke to as well were happy with modest turnout and most were happy to get out and have a chance to show their products as well. Everything inside was spaced appropriately with markings on the floor. With the “Christmas Down The Line” also happening on Saturday that no doubt helped get a few more people through the doors.

The St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers membership is critical in maintaining our club.

Club dues for 2021 are due by the end of December. As in the past a single membership is $65.00 and a family membership is $100.00 with both of these memberships giving you membership in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters with 5 million in liability insurance while hunting

and fishing and 10 issues of the Ontario Out of Doors magazine. Also Lyme disease coverage and medical and travel expense coverage.

This year we will also be offering a $45.00 single membership which will not include the paper version of the magazine but rather an electronic version but will still include the insurance. Currently this option is not available for family memberships.

If you are currently a member of OFAH through another organization or a youth member other options are available on the printed form. Currently we are unable to have general membership meetings so several options to pay your dues will be available:

    1. First print the membership application form from our web site at www.sjiha.ca and fill out your choice2. Annual Legion Branch 374 Remembrance Day Poster / Essay Contest Results

Despite the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic, this year’s poster/essay contest was still held by our local Legion branch 374 (Richards Landing). This year there were 180 works submitted from our local feeder schools Echo Bay Public School, St. Joseph Island Central School, as well as C.A.S.S.

Judging took place on November 25th 2020 in the main Legion hall in Richards Landing. Many thanks to the judges for taking time out of their busy day to carefully judge all submissions for each section. It certainly takes a long time to go through all submissions and come up with the top few winners. This year, as in past years, it was hard to identify those submissions that stood out. Great work students, you are all winners in our hearts.

Thanks to our judges: Ray Kennedy, Barb Jack-son, Judy Connell and Barb Gajda. Below is a list of all the winners per category. Please note that first place winners will be sent on to be judged at the Zone level that takes place at the Legion branch in Wawa. How our first place submissions faired at the zone level will be announced once they are available. Once Covid-19 settles down and things are a lot safer, all works will be re-turned to their schools. Certificates and metals will be presented at that time.

Santa and his entourage Food Bank drive.

The Black Bear Cafe and friends of Santa have organized a mini Santa parade coming to your area (as per map), to collect food and unwrapped gifts for our local food bank. We hope this will be an annual event where we can cover the entire Island over two weekends in future years.

    When: December 13Time: 1 pm - 4 pm

Where: St. Joe Island (see map below)Feel free to wait at the end of your driveway to wave at Santa as he hands out sugar cookies whether you’ve been naughty or nice.

Parade will start at 1pm from The Black Bear Cafe. All streets in the village of Hilton Beach and in

Richards Landing will be visited! If you would like to leave donations at the end of your driveway in animal safe containers, our elves will take the

donation out for the food bank
