Issue 12 - March/April 2018

ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE - OLD GYMPIE/BOUNDARY ROAD, DAKABIN

Council has recently awarded a tender to upgrade the existing roundabout at Old Gympie Road and Boundary Road, Dakabin, with new traffic lights.

A signaled metering traffic light system will be installed which is designed to cope with traffic congestion by activating the traffic lights on the opposing side of the roundabout. When there is no congestion the site will function as a normal roundabout.

Installing new traffic lights at these locations will greatly improve road safety and reduce delays for motorists, who travel through this roundabout every day.

The works will include two traffic signals at the southern and eastern approach of Old Gympie Road and Boundary Road, Dakabin.

Road safety is a top priority for Council and I am thrilled this project will be underway shortly to provide better traffic flow and safety for local motorists. Works were due to commence at the end of February and take about eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.

WELCOME to the 12th edition of the Sims' Summary and

a warm welcome to our newest residents in Division 7.

We have our first Teddy Bears’ Picnic on 23 May at John Oxley Reserve, Murrumba Downs. There will be free entry with entertainment for the little ones, so spread the news and I look forward to seeing you there.

This quarter brings many projects to fruition including upgrades to local parks, and new dog off leash areas in Kallangur and Murrumba Downs.

There will also be intersection upgrades including the Dohles Rocks Road interchange (pg.3), and signalisation of Boundary and Old Gympie Road roundabout (see below).

An external upgrade of Alma and Thompson Road was conditioned on the developer for the corner of Alma and Thompson Roads, due to commence soon. In anticipation, I would like to thank the community for their patience as these project improvements are brought to our road network.

ANZAC Day is on 25 April where we honour those who have made and continue to make the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we now hold. Lest we forget.

Dates and times for my meet the Councilor sessions are on page 3, but as always, if you would like to contact me via email or phone you are most welcome.

Warm regards,

Denise.

Division 7 Projects

DOHLES ROCKS ROAD/BRUCE HIGHWAY INTERCHANGE

Construction work is due to commence mid-March on a $4.5 Million upgrade project at the intersection of Dohles Rocks Road and the Bruce Highway at Murrumba Downs/Griffin. The project will include the installation of traffic signals at both the Bruce Highway on ramp and off ramp intersections with Dohles Rocks Road. This signalisation is a road safety improvement as there have been several road traffic crashes at these two intersections. To further improve road safety the speed limit is to be reduced from 70 kmh to 60 kmh along this section of Dohles Rocks Road.

This is an equal partnership project between Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Works will be predominantly carried out during the night to minimise disruption to motorists. It is anticipated that construction works will be complete by October 2018 weather permitting. Further information on this project can be found on Council’s website:

New layout for the Dohles Rocks Road / Bruce Highway intersection on ramp

Council have also received a number of enquiries as to whether the Queensland/Federal Government are planning to construct on and off ramps to and from the north at the Dohles Rocks Road/Bruce Highway interchange. I am advised that the distance between a motorway on ramp at one interchange and a motorway off ramp at the next interchange has to meet strict contemporary design standards, and the distance between the Murrumba Downs interchange and the Anzac Avenue interchange falls significantly below these standards.

The addition of north facing on and off ramps will create even more lane changing and add to the existing problems. It is for these reasons that the Queensland/Federal Governments are not proposing north facing ramps, but they are currently planning other options to alleviate congestion experienced daily along this section of the Bruce Highway. Please contact your local Federal or State Member for further details.

PARK UPGRADES

I am pleased to announce the following park upgrades which are due to commence/complete within the division:

bench seat, safety fencing and shade plantings

Dog Off Leash Area

• Baybreeze Crescent Park, Murrumba Downs - Additional

play and fitness equipment, new connecting footpath, and associated landscaping

• Ballard Park, Kallangur - Replacement of play equipment and furniture, additional landscaping and access improvements

• Reg Dickens Park, Murrumba Downs - Dog Off Leash Area

NEW WATER SOURCE FOR 100,000 PEOPLE

About 100,000 people in Dakabin, North Lakes, Mango Hill, Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Griffin, Petrie, Lawnton and Strathpine will soon be connected to the SEQ Water Grid for the first time, as part of a joint project between Unitywater and Seqwater. The Petrie Water Treatment Plant (operated by Seqwater), which provides these customers with their water, was built in the late 1950s. As the plant needed a major refurbishment to continue to provide a reliable water supply, it was more efficient to connect the zone to the SEQ Water Grid and decommission the plant. The transition to the new water source will take place over March and April. While the water supply won’t be interrupted, some people may notice a change in its taste and smell due to the change in disinfection methods (from chlorination to chloramination). The water will continue to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. If you keep aquatic pets such as fish, it’s a good idea to talk to your local aquarium supplier about the effects of chloramine in the water if used in an aquarium. Find out more at www.unitywater.com/petrie. The website includes a searchable map if you want to check if your property is affected by the change.

NEW DEFIB. FOR DAKABIN STATE HIGH SCHOOL

It was a pleasure to join our local Rotary and Lions Clubs recently to present a new defibrillator to Dakabin State High School Principal Katrina Larsen and her students.

I’m proud to have been able to provide assistance to the school, together with the clubs, to help purchase the defib.

Following recent medical incidents at the school, the new defibrillator means that staff can now provide immediate aid to students during a medical emergency.

Fifteen March 2018 marked the 10th

anniversary of the Moreton Bay Region.

A decade on, our region has been named Queensland’s Strongest Economy and one of the state’s fastest growing areas.

This year, our region’s population surpassed 438 000 and is on track to be greater than the current population of Tasmania by 2031 with major residential developments including Capestone at Mango Hill, Burpengary’s North Harbour and the earmarked Caboolture West.

Today, Moreton Bay boasts a Gross Regional Product valued at $12.92 billion and is home to more than 25 000 businesses, including major brands like the Super Retail Group and 4x4 accessories manufacturer TJM.

Since 2008 a number of major projects have been delivered including the $988 million Redcliffe Peninsula Line, the $26 million Caboolture Hub and Town Square, $14 million

Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex and the $45 million Corso at North Lakes.

Major improvements to parks and community facilities have been delivered at local swimming pools including Deception Bay and Arana Hills, at Pine Rivers Park and the new Bribie Island Seaside Museum.

If our first 10 years is anything to go by, we have a bright future ahead of us.

I look forward to watching our region continue its success and growth over the next decade and beyond, particularly with the new university precinct at the Mill at Moreton Bay, Petrie which will generate $900 million, 6000 jobs and 10 000 university places by 2031.

Our incentivisation policy will help revamp areas including Strathpine and Caboolture CBDs, while a plan is finalised to generate $9.5 billion in economic activity and 17 000 jobs at the long-awaited Caboolture West.
