SMHI is a government agency under the Ministry of the Environment and the advisory body on meteorology, hydrology and oceanography.
SMHI’s operation is funded in three main ways:–by government subsidy–by assignment from other government agencies–on commercial terms through its Business Services.
Turnover: 530 MSEK (Government 325 MSEK / Business 205 MSEK)
Employees: 550 (30-40 oceanographers & data managers)

SMHI:
• is “Data host” for national and regional marine physical, chemical and biological monitoring data (appointed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency)
• runs the BALTEX Oceanographic Data Centre
• runs the Swedish IPY Data Centre
• has started negotiations with the Swedish Research Council to be ”Data host” for climate- and environmental research data
