This is the third in a series of articles from the leaders of the Canadian music industry. Inthese articles the people at the helm of the industry are expressing .heir outlook and theiropinions regarding the domestic industry. In the weeks to come, we hope to print commentsfrom every Canadian -minded record company.

THE AGE OF COMING OF AGE

From the guiding hands of their par-ents, through the birthpangs of home en-tertainment designed to continue in the'Old Country', to the arrival of televisionand the revolt of the teenager against con-tinuing in the rustic ways of their fore-fathers has been the musical story ofETHNIC CANADA.

Now strong in their new found talents, our teenagers are creating a truly Cana-dian identity through their musical abili-ties.

True, they have to start somewhere.True, they may sound like someone, but donot underestimate their pioneering spirit. They mean to win and, in my opinion,CANNOT LOSE.

The battle of identity is over. We nowhave a Canada with its ethnic minoritiesslowly being absorbed by Canadianism.

French Canada too has greatly contri-buted to the change. French Canadianteenagers laud their homespun musicalheroes to the merry tune of hit singlesales of up to ONE HUNDRED ANDFIFTY THOUSAND, to the detriment ofwell known recording artists from France!Truly this is THE AGE OF COMING OFAGE!

RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TRADEIt takes the drive of many facets of

the industry, who can truly appreciatethe situation, to throw in their lot withthe younger generation.

Much is being done by major recordingcompanies, by trade magazines, such asRPM, but much is lacking in the co-ordina-tion (or co-operation) of many radio sta-tions in firing their public with the newCanadian identity, the commercial Cana-dian product! It amazes me to think howmany Canadian DJs swell with pridewhen introducing a brand new record totheir audience, which is already a hit inthe USA or Britian. How do they think thishit was made but by the concentratedefforts of record companies, managerialstaff, trade papers and DJs in these coun-tries.

THE SOUND WAS POOR

In the past, DJs have cried "Thesound is poor, it does not compare withan American or British production". Thiswas true, but not today. The sound com-ing from the studios of Stereo Sound andRCA Victor in Montreal and Hallmark andRCA Victor in Toronto is more than corn-parible with productions from the USA orBritian.

U.S.A. ACCEPTANCE

As recently as July of this year MacWiseman, a well known country entertainerfrom the USA, asked me if I would A & Ran LP session for him with all Canadiancountry musicians. He was astounded atthe Bluegrass sound we obtained on ouralbums. Needless to say, in the interestof the industry (since the album was beingproduced for another company for releasein the USA and Canada) I agreed but onlyif Mac recorded nothing but the worksof Canadian composers. Mac accepted thecompromise and the session was a tremen-dous success. Perhaps this will prove thatNashville is not, after all, the start andfinish of Country Music.

It is more than probable that countryDJs will play this album because of theWiseman name, little realizing that in itsentirety it is purely the new CanadianSound!

WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

What is the answer to the DJ problemin Canada? Who knows? Many have notreached THE AGE OF COMING OF AGE.Those who have, are fighting the samebattle we have been fighting for years.OUR CONTRIBUTION TO THECANADIANSCENE.

We believe our contribution to the Cana-dian trade and musical scene has beenboth far seeing and practical. I doubt ifany company will deny that we wereamong the first to prove that Canadiantalent (almost unknown) could be mer-chandised in LP form. We paved the wayand more interest was taken by majorcompanies in this market. This benefitsthe Canadian artist.

The 1965 Annual Swing Set PopularityPoll awarded Gord Atkinson of CFRA thebest in DJs and The Staccatos as thefavourite Canadian group.

Dear Walt,Just a little note to

bring you up on thehappenings of Canada'sNo. one group, "TheGuess Who's".

Currently on tourdoing one nightersthrough the EasternSeaboard of the US andthe mighty Mid -West.The boys have had avery busy summer andone that has helpedthem gain a tremendousamount of experience

that has helped them to become a realpolished and exciting act on personalappearances.

The boys have had the pleasure oftouring and playing with some of the bignames in the industry, such as, The Kings -men, Barbara Mason, Eddie Hodges, DionDiMucci, The Turtles, Sam The Sham andThe Pharoahs, Chuck Jackson, MaxineBrown, The Crystals and many more. Youcan understand now, why the boys havegained the experience that I mentionedearlier.

One thing you might be interested inWalt is their observations while in the USIt would appear as far as the boys canascertain that the recording industry ingeneral are looking to Canada for the nextbig sound. Judging by what has been re-leased over the last six months here inCanada, by Canadian artists this is nottoo far in the future from being accomp-lished. Another thing Walt, no matterwhere the boys go and they are beingbilled as from Canada, they are treatedroyally. Believe me, they find this verygratifying. In most cases, they are a longway from home.

As you know Walt, The Guess Who'slast three recordings have reached theTop Five in your National ratings, forwhich they are very grateful, and haveasked me to extend their most heartfeltthanks.

We have in the next week a new singlecoming out, which appears to be the

strongest thing they have ever done. Itis called "Use Your Imagination", and Ithink you'll go for it, but if not, we can'twin them all. I do know this, that theCanadian Broadcasting industry will giveit a fair chance as it has all their otherrecordings.

Walt, the one thing that we as Cana-dians are so very proud of, is, that it allhappened here first. .:anada and QualityRecords gave these kids the shot in thearm that has taken them to 33 foreigncountries around the world. Their lastthree singles and their first LP have beenreleased from one end of the world to theother, mind you in not all countries, andmaybe this will help all other Canadiangroups to make the breakthrough. We allcertainly hope so.

Another nice thing Walt is, that thesereleases are entirely Canadian produc-tions. We use no other musicians than theboys. I produce all their recording sess-ions, and it is handled by an all CanadianRecord Company, Quality. We have en-deavoured to maintain this and we feelreal proud we have been able to do so.

Recently, we have been using thefacilities of Scepter Records studio inNew York, only because of the facilities, but we all make the trip down there. Noone else has anything to do with thesessions.

In closing, may I say, as their manager, thank you for all the courtesies extendedin the past and to say we will do our bestnot to let the Canadian Recording Indus-try down and all who have worked so hardto put it where it is.

I remain,Bob Burns,

Gordon Sinclair is prob-ably one of the mostlistened to newcastersin Canada, and I'm agreat fan of Sinclair's"Showbusiness". Mr.Sinclair tells us allabout movies, stage, radio and talks aboutthe foreign record busi-ness and keeps us in-formed on the expatriots

While the Music Industry makes a bignoise from Canada throughout the world, itmust be mentioned that the Canadian filmmakers, television producers and even bookpublishers are making waves in the bigpond. Have we as Canadians been caughtup in our own centennial fever and are un-consciously becoming pro Canadians?
