Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have
continually demonstrated the determination to
drive to a higher growth trajectory. However, to
make this strategic, SMEs need international
benchmarks, technical expertise and both
competition and co-operation from other
SMEs.
This is where our Centre of Excellence extends its meaningful
interventions - be it through Cluster programmes, training,
seminars, international engagements and events like the National
Cluster Summit. We remain committed in our efforts to transform
Indian SMEs into the best league of enterprises.

audit at the the Haridwar Plant of Automobile major Mahindra and Mahindra from April 16 to 19, 2013. The detailed
energy audit involved data collection, measurements, data analysis of all thermal & electrical energy consumers like
paint shop, assembly line, air compressors, electrical distribution system, motors, pumps, lighting and harmonic
level assessment.
Specific improvements were suggested for energy efficiency equipments & optimisation of specific energy
consumption of the plant. The identified projects covered savings without investment, some medium term
investment projects & some capital projects on energy efficient technology up-gradation. The Haridwar Plant of
Mahindra & Mahindra is an assembly line for Multi Utility Vehicle Bolero and for the, Alpha mini loader.
CII-AVANTHA Centre for Competitiveness for SMEs organized a two day training
Programme on 2-3 May 2013 for Energy Professionals at Hotel Park Plaza in
Faridabad
The topic of “Energy Conservation Techniques' was designed with a view to enrich
the Energy Professionals with advanced and emerging trends in this field, which
would prove to be relevant and effective for the industry in which they would
implement it. The programme was under the BEE-GEF-World Bank Project
'Financing Energy Efficiency at MSMEs. It is part of the project in which Bureau of
Energy Efficiency (BEE), Government of India in coordination with Confederation
of Indian Industry (CII) has taken up the initiative to enhance the Energy Efficiency
of the Mixed Industry in the Faridabad (Haryana) through BEE – GEF – WB
Energy Efficiency Mixed Cluster Program.
The objective of the project is to accelerate the adoption of Energy Efficient technologies and practices through
knowledge sharing, capacity building and development of innovative financing mechanisms. One of the focus area of
the training program was to train energy professionals, to develop knowledge on techniques for effective energy
management at design stage itself, so that it results in reducing both thermal and electrical energy consumption in
operation.

As a part of its efforts to make the industry aware about the various dynamics of corrosion management and to
showcase the best practices to combat corrosion, CII-AVANTHA Centre for Competitiveness for SMEs held a two day
training Program on 'Corrosion Control Using Effective Paints & Coatings' on 23-24 May 2013 at Bangalore.
When it comes to paints and coatings, the most frequent consideration is about their eventual effects on appearance of
the substrate in question. Though improving the appearance is a key attribute of paints and coatings, but somehow
additional functionalities can also be procured. Coatings and paints play a significant role in protecting the valuables
from corrosion. The training program was attended by companies from different parts of the country. It had eminent
speakers from Corrosion Management Committee talking on different dimensions of Corrosion as well as providing on
the spot solutions to the captivated audience.

Our Corrosion Management Services: Mission Corrosion Prevention
The impact of corrosion on the nation's exchequer is a staggering figure of Rs. 2 lakh crores. Losses due to corrosion
are enormous and are not only affecting the economy but also the safety quotient in industry besides the adverse
impact on the environment.
Not many are aware that atmospheric corrosion may be affecting our cultural heritage. In the industrial context,
corroded machineries could lead to accidents, life hazards, food and water contamination, higher energy
consumption, value erosion of expensive materials et al. Due to the limited awareness about corrosion, very little
preventive measurements were made in the past by the industries.
In such a scenario, CII-AVANTHA Centre for Competitiveness has initiated a service on Corrosion Management
and formed a “Committee on Corrosion Management” (CMC) under the chairmanship of Dr Baldev Raj, Former
Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) & President Research, PSG Institutions. CII - CMC is a
network of internationally renowned experts on corrosion, who work committed to minimise corrosion related losses
in India. The members list of CMC includes experts from various Indian research institutions like IGCAR, Bhabha
Atomic Research Centre (BARC), National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Central Electro Chemical Research
Institute (CECRI) and industries such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Oil & Natural Gas
Corporation Ltd (ONGC), National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) & Engineers India Limited (EIL) etc.
CII - CMC services includes Detailed Corrosion Audits, Corrosion Awareness Program in the form of regular
Seminars/Training Programs, In-house Training Programs for the industry, and Awareness drives through
Posters & Publications.
CII - CMC aims at better corrosion management which can be achieved using preventive strategies. These
preventive strategies include increasing awareness of significant corrosion costs and potential cost-savings,
changing the misconception that nothing can be done about corrosion, changing policies, regulations, standards,
and management practices to increase corrosion cost-savings through sound corrosion management, and by
developing advanced life prediction of machinery and performance assessment.
CII - CMC corrosion audit approach advocates the need for the company to build up competencies as we
progress. Corrosion audit would happen through a combination of inputs:
¶Formal class-room training ¶Consulting (assisting in finding the exact solutions and hands holding during implementation). ¶Counseling (helping management make wise choices in deciding the development of a road-map and its
implementation) ¶Off-line support during the project for many things that may be done not necessarily in the factory
premises.

These are implemented in the plant, so that there is a sustainable change in the maintenance cost. The
benefits that industries are getting through corrosion audit includes 30-40% reduction of the corrosion
related issues at each and every area, less down time of the equipment due to corrosion, minimization of
quality threat to the finished products by corrosion, controlled life cycle cost of painting program and
maintenance.
CII - CMC is also creating awareness through publishing booklets on corrosion on various topics like corrosion of
materials such as Carbon steels, Stainless steels, Aluminum alloys, Copper & Zinc alloys, and Titanium & Zirconium
alloys. Also booklets on forms of corrosion, corrosion monitoring & inspection, paints & coatings, corrosion inhibitor
applications etc are also being published.
With these activities of CII - CMC industries are getting a pathway to approach R & D organisations that can improve
their efficiency and reduce corrosion related failures. CII - CMC is dedicated to create corrosion awareness and its
related issues in Indian industry to build a safe, clean and stainless India.
