Laser welding 2008-2013 growth forecast 7.5%. Hybrid laser-arc welding applications are burgeoning

Non-destructive testing is rising with automatic phased array ultrasonic sensors, notably for tube and pipe manufacturing

Narrow gap welding technology still needs developments to improve large grain boundaries susceptibility to cracks.

Friction stir welding grows beyond aluminum into carbon and stainless steels

Scarcity of helium supply sources promotes innovative shielding gas blends

2008 production of 120MM tons includes 37MM tons of seamless tubes and 83MM tons of welded tubes, of which 65MM of less than 16” diameter

China fuels global growth to produce 32% of world’s tubes & pipes. China produces 50% of world seamless tubes. North-America’s production grew 10% to 15MM tons in 08; principally due to high demand in energy markets

Sustained trend towards multi-operation tube bending & fabricating cells

Increased usage of nickel-aluminum-bronze material for mandrel tooling
