A Santa Monica pastry chef has created a tasty alternative to greeting cards that are gaining popularity with local residents and businesses.

Celine Zhou started her online bakery, DeLight Patisserie, two years ago when she moved to Santa Monica after finishing pastry school in Paris. She originally sold cakes, but her business has really taken off since she started selling an innovative new product this past summer.

Several months ago, Zhou baked a batch of dainty shortbread cookies for a friend and stamped them with the message, “Wake up, kick ass, repeat.” When her other friends began clamoring for their own custom cookies for birthdays and bridal showers, she realized the cookies could be used to commemorate all the special occasions that one would usually buy a card for.

But the cookies she had sent to her friends needed work. Zhou ran dozens of tests on the cookies to make sure that the messages she stamped on them remained clear after baking. She also worked to perfect their flavors — vanilla, matcha and dark chocolate.

When she started selling the cookies online and at local businesses like Cafe Demitasse, she said customers were surprised not only that they were edible, but that they actually tasted good.

“Some people make cookies with custom messages, but the messages are always written in

icing,” she said. “It looks cute, but it tastes too sweet.”

Zhou said customers flocked to her website to order cookies for weddings and baby showers, asking Zhou to print their names and the date of the celebration on

upgraded light rail line starting Saturday and going through Monday, Nov. 4.

The A Line opened in 1990 and is Metro’s oldest rail line, according to a news release from Metro. The line has historically had the highest ridership out of all of Metro’s light rail lines because it connects riders in Long Beach and the greater areas of Los Angeles to places like Santa Monica and Hollywood.

In 2019, Metro began the $350-million New Blue Improvements Project to increase the reliability of Metro’s oldest light rail line with four new switches, an upgraded control system and a new overhead power system, officials previously announced. Station upgrades were also performed to include interactive digital information screens, new station identifiers, refreshed paint and new digital artwork.

The modernization efforts forced the closure of the southern half of the A Line but work on the southern segment was completed June 1. However, closures began on the northern half of the line, which disrupted Expo Line Service at the 7th St/Metro Center and Pico stations.

Nearly three-quarters of a year have passed, but with the work now completed, rail service on the entire 22-mile A Line between

downtown Los Angeles and downtown Long Beach will return to full service.

“We are excited that Metro’s oldest light rail line will be back in service between Los Angeles and Long Beach and we want to thank our customers for their patience during the modernization work this year,” said Metro Board Chair James Butts in a news release. “The A Line is a lifeline for the many diverse communities between Los Angeles and Long Beach who rely on reliable rail service to help them reach jobs, school, family and other vital destinations in our region.”

The A Line is the first rail line to employ Metro’s new naming convention in which its rail and bus rapid transit lines will be designated with letters and colors, according to Metro officials. The new naming convention was approved in 2018 and designed to make the agency’s growing system easier to navigate.

“We believe that a greatly improved A Line will better serve existing riders and also attract new customers to the Metro system,” said Metro CEO Phillip Washington. “Even as we work to expand our system, Metro’s State of Good Repair program is devoted to taking care of and improving what we already have and extending the lifespan of our assets. That benefits everyone, (including) our riders and the taxpayers who support our system.”

the cookies. She was also surprised to see how many companies ordered branded cookies.

What she enjoys most, she said, is seeing how creative customers get in crafting their messages and the unexpected reasons why they order custom cookies. One customer ordered cookies with his name, age and phone number to hand out to potential dates and another sent a box of cookies with the message “less stress, more sex” to a friend mourning a breakup, she said.

One of her favorite batches bore the question, “Will you marry me?” and below it, “A: Yesss. B: Choice A.”

The popularity of the cookies has allowed Zhou to hire two part-time employees and start partnering with restaurants and hotels. She brings an edible business card when she introduces herself to potential clients.

“My cookie card does have my name and email address on it,” she said. “I put a paper card behind it, but with an edible business card, people are definitely more likely to remember you.”

Will EVs outnumber gas-powered cars on

American roads?

DEAR EARTHTALK: I SEE MORE AND MORE EVS OUT OF THE ROAD. WHEN WILL THEY START TO OUTNUMBER INTERNAL COMBUSTION CARS ON AMERICAN ROADS?— Jane L., New Bern, NC

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been around about as long as cars themselves. In fact, primitive EVs were the dominant form of automotive transportation at the dawn of the auto age in Europe and the U.S. in the late 19th century. It wasn’t until the 1920s—when the U.S. road system was starting to be built out and cheap oil was available from newly tapped Texas oil fields—that internal combustion cars began to take over as the predominant vehicles across the United States.

And we never looked back. Until recently, that is. Nowadays, EVs (Teslas, Leafs, Bolts, etc.) are indeed everywhere. Analysts estimate the EVs will be cheaper to buy than internal combustion cars as soon as 2022. Beyond that, it’s probably only a matter of two decades before EVs represent the majority of cars, light trucks and SUVs plying American roads.

In 2018, EVs made up only about six percent of total U.S. new car sales, but that figure represents an astonishing 70 percent growth from the year prior. Moving forward, analysts expect around 13 percent annual compound growth in the EV sector for the foreseeable future. Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a research arm of the New York-based media company, expects sales of passenger EVs to overtake conventional internal combustion-based vehicles by 2038 (with EV sales topping 50 million a year as compared to conventional vehicle sales of 47 million by then). After that, EVs, with their lower ongoing fuel and maintenance costs, will continue taking over more and more of the market every year, calling the very future of the internal combustion engine passenger car into question.

As technologies mature (allowing for better battery storage and extended driving range) and manufacturers ramp up production and prices come down accordingly, consumers will begin to look exclusively at EVs when shopping for new cars. Indeed, a recent survey of 2,000 adults living in either California or the Northeast Tristate Area (NY, NJ, CT) by consulting firm West Monroe Partners found that the majority (59 percent) of respondents think their next vehicle will be an electric car. Not surprisingly, the survey found that Gen Zers (those born after 1996) are especially inclined toward EVs.

That said, only 16 percent of respondents are driving around in EVs today, and concerns including short battery life and lack of charging stations (limiting the vehicles’ range), as well as high up-front purchase costs, are still holding many of us back from taking the all-electric plunge. But the writing is on the wall for gas guzzling passenger cars as we overcome these short-term hurdles. With about 15 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions emanating from the tailpipes of our internal combustion cars and light trucks, and gasoline becoming more and more expensive, the inevitable switchover to EVs—despite efforts by the Trump administration to reduce national fuel efficiency standards and bolster the ailing oil industry—is going to be a win-win for consumers and the planet. 2038 can’t come too soon!

King said in August. “Transportation is the biggest contributor

to greenhouse gas emissions,” Mayor Gleam Davis said when the BBB’s first battery-powered bus was unveiled in August. “The most that each and every one of us can do to reduce our emissions is get on this bus and adopt other carbon-light ways of getting around Santa Monica and the region as a whole.”

Each bus will cost $800,000 — about $200,000 more than BBB’s existing renewable natural gas buses — in federal grant funding and local funding from Measure M, the sales tax to support transit that county voters approved in 2016. The chargers for each bus cost about $125,000.

Including taxes, upgrades, training and other costs, the total price of the 18 buses and their chargers comes in at $21.5 million.

King said the battery-powered buses will replace 18 buses purchased in 2004 and 2006 that are reaching the end of their lifespans. Over the 12 years they will be in service, they will eliminate 385,740 pounds of nitrous oxide emissions.

They also provide a smoother, quieter ride, King said. The first battery-powered bus BBB purchased, which has been serving the 1, 3 and 9 routes since August, has received positive feedback from both bus drivers and customers.

The higher cost of the electric bus is partially offset by fuel savings over its lifespan, King said. Other transit agencies in

California and other states are also buying electric buses, which will make them less expensive over time, he added.

Among the other agencies going electric is LA Metro, which also plans to replace its fleet with electric buses by 2030 and received its first bus in July. Cities like Albuquerque and Minneapolis have also purchased electric buses, although some have encountered problems related to battery range.

King said the buses, which are manufactured by Gillig in Livermore, California, can travel up to 150 miles on a single charge on its battery designed by the Indiana-based company Cummins.

The transition to electric buses over the next decade is expected to cost $78 million, according to an April 2018 analysis by city of Santa Monica staff. At the same time, BBB will be restructuring its routes and schedules to account for declining ridership, a trend that has also impacted LA Metro and other transit agencies both in Southern California and around the country.

After ridership fell 20% between 2014 and 2017 to slightly more than 13 million trips, the City Council directed BBB to cut service on low-demand routes and run buses more frequently in busy areas to avoid entering a financial deficit. It also took five buses out of service.

The route changes BBB made in March are projected to reduce operating costs by about $3 million and boost passenger revenue by roughly $170,000.

What causes despair is not the problem itself, but the sense that it is persistent, perhaps even relentless. The opposition of the sun and Uranus points out that this is good news. It means that a shake-up will solve problem by breaking the pattern. Any kind of shake-up will do, so why not use this as an excuse to plan something super fun?

Oppositional Opportunity

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You don’t need to (and should not!) do anything bigger or better or differently. Just show up and be you. Trying to do anything more than that will cause an energetic ruckus around you that will only prevent you from enjoying yourself.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). In the case of running out of gas in the car or ink in the printer, the obstacle isn’t a block but a lack of resources needed to go forward. It bears mention as today there will be a chance to buy in bulk. Do it to help out future you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). At times, your own mind is like a grand, fully furnished room that you sense you know well but nonetheless cannot confidently navigate until you’ve first turned on the light. Curiosity is the light.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Nothing cures fear like action. Action is a form of courage. When you’re feel-ing trepidation, put one foot in front of the other before you can get the chance to build a case against it.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Triggers get hit today that tell people to tune out or maybe to rage against. Knowing where the buttons are and how they are wired is important if only so you can avoid them altogether in the future.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You will agree with a person while disagreeing with what the person is saying. You’ll make the distinction and build trust with a person now. Mutually satisfying solutions are in your future.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The fun thing about con-necting with people for the first time is that whatever happens will likely go down in the memory book, as first-time meetings tend to do. With this in mind, be a bit daring and make it count.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). How you give your attention will be more important than how long you give it. Five wonderful minutes with someone will be more mean-ingful than 105 dull ones.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Fear, worry and self-centered concern will provide a continuous patter to drown out what’s important if you let it. All you have to do is pause and notice. This small act will interrupt the noise.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). What would it take to get a stretch of free time and adventure? Put the plan in motion. Two outstanding benefits will come of it. You’ll prevent future burnout, and you’ll brighten the days leading up to it with sunny anticipation.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Your intuition is dialed up and ready to fill in today’s knowledge gaps. Knowing what not to do will be more important than knowing what to do. But the most valuable instinct of all will be knowing when to stop.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The difference between good communication and ineffective communication is often a matter of honesty. People are getting more and more savvy to deception. One whiff of it can taint all.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (OCTOBER 28 )

You’ll be invigorated, inspired and revitalized by this solar return. Because you’ve known life cycles in which you had to take two steps back to move forward, this new stretch will be thrilling by comparison. It’s all forward movement and fresh experience. You’ll take on a series of challenges and amaze yourself. Libra and Pisces adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 7, 20, 4, 37 and 1.

TRICK OR TREAT?: While the fight for food is among the most basic tenants of our survival code, the instinct to gift food is reserved for the highly evolved. Somewhere in its early development, the human species seems to have collectively agreed on one thing: The gods want our food. Humans in every culture have been known to sac-rifice animals, vegetables and relatives to the gods. In recent times, our gifts are more commonly indirect and representational. To leave oranges on an altar, ingest a sacrament or even treat St. Nick to some cookies is to observe some primal instinct to, if only symbolically,

share food with the universe. Consider the soul cake. Its early origins are murkily related to human sacrifice, but by the 8th century these baked items were paid to wandering beggars in exchange for prayers for the souls of dead relatives. From there, the practice evolved in var-ious directions: sweets for songs, dances, costumes and other “tricks,” sweets for for charity, sweets as payoffs to avoid trouble, or sweets just because on some basic level, down deep in our souls, we still believe that the gods must be hungry.
