Director’s Message—Mr. S. Handrigan

It is hard to believe that the month of October is upon us! The September whirlwind

of adjusting to all of the back-to-school routines is now behind us and we can look for-

ward to an exciting year ahead.

The return of the boys to St. Michael’s Cathedral after the summer break is much an-

ticipated and appreciated by the entire St. Michael’s Community. Congratulations to all

of the boys for their superb singing in the Cathedral since September. I also wish to

extend a special thank you to Dr. Cichocki, Ms. Dunn and Ms. Bagan for all of their

hard work and expertise.

The entire P.O.S.T. Department has also been working hard throughout the month of September finalizing

their teaching schedules around all of the various activities here at SMCS. I would like to thank Mr. Dusatko

for his leadership and I extend a heart-felt thanks to the entire P.O.S.T. Department for their flexibility and

patience.

On Friday, October 18th at 7:30 p.m. in St. Michael’s Cathedral we will be presenting our annual Founder’s

Day Concert. This concert will feature the world premiere of the “Mass of St. Michael the Archangel” by

five-time GRAMMY Award winner Paul Halley. Commissioned by His Eminence, Thomas Cardinal Collins,

Archbishop of Toronto, the “Mass of St. Michael the Archangel” commemorates the 75th anniversary of

SMCS. This new mass setting will be the centrepiece of the concert entitled “Songs of Faith”. While admis-

sion is free to all, free will offerings are appreciated.

I want to remind you all that our Grades 5-12 students will be touring Peterborough and Boston from April

30-May 7, 2014. We will be having an information meeting on Tuesday, October 15th in the Auditorium be-

ginning at 7:00 p.m. At the meeting you will meet our tour operator and you will find out all of the details of

the tour. At this meeting, you will also receive information regarding our overnight “Run-Out” tour to Lind-

say and Brooklin, ON (November 28-29).

Plans are well under way for our annual Massey Hall concerts scheduled for December 7th and 8th. I would

like to take this opportunity to thank the Massey Hall Committee for all of their work which is year-round,

to ensure the success of this important annual SMCS event.

Soon you will also be receiving information regarding our Dinner Dance which will take place on Friday,

February 28th 2014. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Thank you all for your on-going support of SMCS and I look forward to seeing you on at our Founder’s Day

Concert on October 18th!

With warm regards,

CROSS COUNTRY— Mme. LO CURTO

The SMCS Cross-country team of 2013-14 is a lively, energetic and determined group of boys from

excited group of boys by following our blog on www.smcsrunning.tumblr.com

Our divisional meet is coming up on Wednesday, October 16 and all those who qualify will go on to

the regional meet on October 23, 2013. Both these meets will be held at The Beaches-Boardwalk. The

City meet will be held on October 29, 2013 at Earl Bales Park (Bathurst and Sheppard). All our wel-

come. Also a big thank you to Angela Racco, Diane Scaramuzza and Dora Wong, three parents who

October 2013 CHOIR SCHOOL NEWS

Along with the added rehearsals, masses, and various other activities that

happen around the Choir School during the month of October, the Student

Council has been working on a number of different events and activities to

improve student life in our school and in our community! We are just finishing up our

very successful SPC Card fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who purchased a card!

We have also begun our annual Thanksgiving Can Drive. The drive runs until Thurs-

day October 10th, 2013 and all donations will be given to St. Francis Table. We are all

extremely blessed to be surrounded by friends and family and to have a nice hot meal

on Thanksgiving, but there are members of our community who do not have that luxury. Please donate

generously to ensure that as many people as possible have a happy Thanksgiving.

On September 30th we held our first Upper House event of the school year. Beginning with an assembly,

our incoming Grade 9’s were introduced to the house system, and sorted into their new house, the Grade

11 House Captains and the new House Chairmen for Hopperton House were elected. Following the as-

sembly, we ran our annual Spartan Dodgeball event where the newly assembled houses battled it out in

the gym for the title of Spartan Dodgeball Champions. Despite winning every game, Hopperton House

was defeated by Ronan House in the final, leaving Ronan House victorious. Congratulations to Ronan

House, our new House Captains, and our new House Chairmen.

Our next major Upper House activity will take place on Halloween where students will have a chance to

partake in exciting Halloween related activities including our annual Costume Contest. We will also be

releasing a student survey in the near future which will give students the opportunity to voice their

thoughts and opinions relating to particular subjects around the school. Through the survey, the Student

Council is able to better understand how we can improve the everyday life of Students here at the Choir

School.

CSAC – October 2013 Newsletter

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

CSAC ELECTIONS

On Thursday, September 12, 2013 we held our elections for the CSAC Executive. The following parents were elected:

2013-2014

Geoffrey Rawlinson, Co-Chair

Pina Povolo, Co-Chair

Angela Racco, Secretary

Weilie Shen, Treasurer

____________________________________________________________________________________________

With the School year well underway, the CSAC Executive would like to provide an update of a few of our fundraising activities:

CSAC Family Fee – thank you for your support of our Family Fee program. The initial response has been excellent – thank you

again! For those who haven’t yet participated in the program, we hope to count on your contribution and thank you advance for

your support.

Fall Uniform Exchange – another well-attended uniform exchange took place on September 6. Over $3,000 was raised, with

close to 300 articles sold! More importantly, not only did the event drive additional value to the parents but it also helped to build

our community by promoting volunteer opportunities for the students. Students William Gatchalian and Derek Li, in particular,

made their parents proud by providing exceptional customer service during the sale – well done!

Fall Lunch Program – the Lunch Program is well underway and providing hot meals to over 180 students and staff, the proceeds

of which flow directly back to the School. Thank you to all of our volunteers! If you have any questions about the Lunch Pro-

gram, please email Pina Povolo at [email protected].

As we look forward to this year’s budget planning process, a quick review of recurring expenditures from past years includes li-

brary support, sports programs, classroom support, leadership programs, student council, and the speaker series, among others. As

well, periodically the parent community through CSAC supports one-time expenditures, intended to improve facilities and equip-

ment for extra-curricular activities for our boys to help round-out the experience here at the School. In previous years, these have

included weight room equipment, a scoreboard for the gym, spot lights for the auditorium, music instruments, and microwaves for

the lunchroom.

Moving forward we look forward to your continued support for all the events that fill out the CSAC calendar throughout the year.

As you can see, your efforts go a long way and together we can do more and do better to support our boys and enrich their lives

here at St. Michael’s Choir School.

October., 2013

It’s hard to believe September has come and gone so quickly. What felt like uncertainty just a few

weeks ago is now a routine we walk through daily without a second thought.

At the end of September we also celebrated the Feast day of St. Michael, the Patron of our school, our

Cathedral, and our city. The name Michael comes from ancient Hebrew. It is a question: who is like God? It is also a challenge which makes us reflect on how our actions measure up against God’s unfa-

thomable love and mercy. In our own lives, do our actions, thoughts, and words resemble the love of

God, or do they deviate from it. It’s particularly challenging, because no human can truly say that his or

her actions even come close to emulating God’s perfect love. At the same time, it is inspiring to know

that our faith journey will one day take us to God where we will experience a perfect love, unknowable

in our current world. Until we experience God face-to-face in heaven, we pray for Michael’s guidance in

all our battles, both spiritual and temporal.

God Bless,
