iOS

• iPhone OS. It’s developed by Apple and it’s used just in iPhones and iPads (tablets, not phones).

• It a closed OS, although is based in an open source OS, UNIX. You just can install the apps (aplications) and games that apple lets you, through App Store. Yo can’t make your own apps and share them, you have to pay the developer license and upload it to the app store. Apps have to be validated.

• It latest version is 4.2.1, but a new version, 4.3, is going to be released the next Friday.

• Over 100000000 (100 million) iPhones have been sold.• All iPhones can be jailbroken: this let you install custom apps, or apps

which haven’t been validated in the App Store. The important part of this is that you can customise your iPhone, and install your apps.

Smartphones

Pros

• Optimization. This the best thing in iOS. For example, although iPhone 3GS hardware is not as a good a some Android phones, it has more performance, which means better games and powerful aplications.

• It’s really easy to use• It’s a very stable OS. You wont have any problem with any aplication, such

as crashes, or freezings.

Smartphones

Cons

• It’s easy to use. This is also a good thing, but some people doesn’t like its simpicity. It dpends on the user.

• It’s a closed system. This means that you can’t develop your own aplications and test them if you don’t pay the developer licence (99$ per year). There are some not official ways, but they are not so good.

• Apple do what they want to. For example, iPhone 2G (EDGE) could run iOS 4, but as it is old there’s no more updates for them. This is used to make people buy new iPhones.

App Store

• It’s a shop where you buy apps and games. A part of them are free, and most of paid apps let you try them for a limited time for free.

• They can be easily downloaded for free. You have to install the program “Installous”. You need jailbreak to do this. This is just a little part of the posibilities of jailbreak, jailbreak s not bad at all.

• Recently, apple has reached 2000000000 (2000 million)$ in payments to developers.

• There are over 10000000000 (10000 millones) downloads.

• The minimun price (if the app is not free) is 0.99$, 0.79€ in Spain. The avreage price por paid apps is 1.20€.

Smartphones

Android• It’s a free operating system developed by Google.• The best phones now are Samsung Galaxy S, Google Nexus S, and Google Nexus One.

Google Nexus Phones are a bit inferior but their ROMs (specific android version of each smartphone) is made by Google, its better optmised.

• It’s based on linux, which gives you a lot of posibilities and customization. For example yo can make your own ROM for your phone, adding more features, or use other people custom made ROMs. This custom made roms are usually much better than the one in the phone by default.

• The latest version is 2.3, android “Gingerbread”. There’s also 3.0, but it’s not for phones, just for tablets. Its name is Honeycomb. The names of android OS version are always deserts, and follow an alphabetical order

Version Number Name

1.5 Cup Cake

1.6 Donut

2.0/2.1 Eclair

2.2 Froyo

2.3 Gingerbread

3.0 Honeycomb

Pros

• It’s free, so you can access its source code, modify it, sell it and do whatever you do with it. The SDK (Software Developing Kit, used to make aplications and games) is free, yo can make your own apps, download and use other people ones, etc.

• Its sure for people who are not expert. To make important changes on the phone sytem /installing a new rom, overclocking it, etc. you need to have root access, and although this is not difficult to be done, it’s impossible to be done if you don’t want to, or if you don’t know what it is.

• You can choose between a lot of phones. Some people need a bigger screen, some ones need a good camera, some one need a real keyboard… there’s anything you need

• Customization. It’s a linux OS, so it also have the option of changing the desktop, called launcher. Usually, Samsung, HTC, etc. Make their own launchers for their phones, which are not very good. There are launchers imiting other OS, such as iOS. Touchwiz, the default launcher in Samsung phones, it’s really similar (too much) to iOS interface.

Smartphones

Cons

• The big variety of phones. It’s a good thing, but its also really bad. In iOS the old devices don’t have updates (iPhone EDGE is from 2007) but in android nearly all phones don’t have them. Most of the updates are made by people, in custom ROMs. Google phones don’t have this problem.

• Optimization is not very good. This is also because of the number of android phones there are. Samsung Galaxy S is more powerful than iPhone 3Gs (and similar to iPhone 4) but it doesn’t have the same performance.

• It’s not very easy to use. This is not a problem for expert users, but for most of the people in Sapin, it is.

Android Market

• It’s like App Store, a place to buy apps.• Android is free, and it’s based on a free OS

(linux), and the kind of developers which make apps for android are realationed with this, and most of them support the freeware. So there are many more free apps than in the App Store.

• There are less apps and they are not so good, but the number is increasin 4 times faster than App Store.

• You can access it, apart (obviously) from the phone, from a PC, in the internet (market.android.com). You log in with your google account, buy the apps you want, and if your phone is connected to the internet, it will inmediatly start to download to it.

Symbian

• Operating system developed by nokia. It was the first real Os por phones, but it was not very good, and they didn’t improve it too much, so android and iOS are now in a higher level.

• Its latset version is Symbian^3. It has improved a lot, but not enough, it’s still a slow OS, and have few apps and games.

• It also have an app shop, Ovi Store, but it has few apps.

Windows Phone 7

• Microsoft OS based on windows 7.• It’s a good SO, all the phones which use mus have (and do) good and

similar hardware, which makes it a very optimised OS. It wont have problems with updates (in new phones).

• The reason is why it’s not going to be very popular is that it’s very late. The entire phone market is full. Expert users have android (or maybe iPhone) phones, intermediate users have iPhones, and normal users have simple phones. It has no place on it.

Other OS

• J2ME: Based on Java. It’s a very simple OS used in very basic phones. It have games and apps, but not very good. Anyway, the kind of users which use this phones don’t usually need them.

• Blackberry OS: A very stable OS, which is just perfect for messaging. Email, SMS, BB chat… It’s used by bussiness man which need to call and send a lot of email. It has a lot of options to configure it as you want to, so once you’ve done that it’s very easy to use.

• LiMo: It’s based in linux, like android. It’s not very good and it’s used in very few phones.

• Maemo: Based on linux, it’s a very good OS, but Nokia (its developer) hasn’t made any phone with it

My opinion

• I like both of them (iOS and Android, the rest are not interesting for me), and I have an iPhone and and Android phone. Both of them have good things, iPhone game are awsome and I like developing my own apps and testing ROMs in my Android phone.

• I think iOS is a bit better, but Android is improving very fast (as you can see in the rate of apps number growth) and in a good way.
