Other PrecautionsFor operating safety and proper installation, read this guide carefully and observe thefollowing precautions:

1 The digitizer inside the screen won't work if placed in the vicinity of a large magneticfield. For this reason, keep speakers and power transformers away from the lectern.

2 Do not place sharp or heavy objects on the screen because they may scratch itssurface or block ventilation holes. Do not use any instrument other than the tetheredstylus on the screen as the screen's coating may be damaged.

3 The SMART X-Port™ 30 unit can support only one control panel at a time. Connectingtwo panels will cause the system to malfunction.

4 Avoid setting up and using the lectern in an area with excessive levels of dust, humidity and cigarette smoke. Do not set up the lectern where it is exposed to directsunlight, severe temperature changes, heat from other appliances, water or any otherliquid.

5 Do not modify the power cord. Handle the power cord carefully and avoid excessivebending. You should route the power cord so it is unlikely to be walked on or pinchedby items placed upon or against it. If you must run the cable over the floor, lay thecable in a flat, straight line and secure it to the floor with tape or a cable-managementstrip in a contrasting color.

6 Do not connect or disconnect the video or power cable while the console is on, as itmay damage the liquid crystal display (LCD) or the computer video card.

7 The lectern is equipped with a three-wire grounding-type plug. This plug will only fitinto a grounding-type power outlet. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace the outlet. Do not try to circumvent the plug's safetyrestrictions.

8 The lectern's location should give you clear and direct access to the main power plugso you can unplug the unit at any time. Always disconnect the unit before performingany installation or maintenance.

9 Disconnect the power to the lectern during electrical storms or if it won't be used overa long period of time.

10 Do not exceed a display refresh rate of 75 Hz for input sources as this can cause thescreen to overheat.

11 If replacement parts are required, the service technician must use replacement partsspecified by SMART Technologies Inc. or parts with the same characteristics as theoriginals that have been approved by SMART Technologies Inc.

12 Use the lectern with a VGA or DVI graphics card. An inappropriate graphics card maydamage the screen.

13 Avoid subjecting the lectern to intensive shock or vibration. You may damage thelectern by hitting or dropping any component.

14 The stylus is a sealed unit. There aren't any user-repairable parts inside the stylus, norare there any batteries. If you attempt to open the stylus, you may break the seal andrender the stylus unusable.

15 With use, the stylus wears down. Do not use a stylus that has worn down to a sharp orangular tip as it may damage the screen. See page 28 for information on changing thestylus tip.

16 Prevent children from playing with the stylus, as the small tip may be accidentallyremoved, creating a choking hazard.

SMART X-Port 30 UnitRack-mounted inside the lectern, the SMART X-Port 30 unit controls the switching betweenvarious signals, including RGB video, RS-232 serial and audio. Users can easily switchbetween as many as three connected input devices by using the control panel, which islocated on the console.

X-Port 30 Unit

Your integrator can connect up to three RGB input sources to the X-Port 30 unit, two videooutput sources and an external audio system. Images displayed on the screen originate fromone input source, and can be transmitted to any connected output device. A simple buttonpress on the control panel controls the input source, simultaneously switching video, serialand audio signals sent to the screen. These input sources can include an:

• internal computer

• external computer, such as a guest laptop computer

• auxiliary input device in the equipment drawer, such as a document camera, VCR or DVDplayer

NOTE: If your video source doesn't have an RGB output signal, you'll need to integrate avideo scaler to convert the signal.

In most cases, the first device option on the control panel is a permanently installed computer, followed by your laptop computer and the auxiliary video device in the equipment drawer. However, if your integration differs from this guideline, the icons on the control panel may notmatch your devices.

Through the X-Port 30 unit, the lectern can send video output to an external projector oranother external monitor, while also sending the audio output to a room sound system.

Power Distribution Power cable extensions are connected to the power bar, which is located behind the rack-mount cabinet, near the audience side of the lectern. Those cables are routed through thecable channels so the interior of the cabinet remains neat.

You'll notice three available outlets on the power bar. Use these with the IEC/country-specificadapters (in miscellaneous accessory kit) to connect other peripheral equipment. Occupyingthe other power bar outlets are power cables from:

• the external computer (laptop) AC (MAINS) cable

• the computer extension cable

• the auxiliary video source AC (MAINS) cable

• the console, which has an 18V DC power supply

• the X-Port 30 unit, which has a 12V DC power supply

The Cable Management SystemTo keep your wires and cables in manageable order, use the cable channels inside thelectern. You can easily add your cables to the channels by snapping off the cover, laying yourcable(s) with the other cables, and finally returning the cover to its place.

You can also secure other components using the sturdy corner brackets inside the lectern.Any #8 x ½" sheetmetal screw will fit into the existing holes along the brackets. (Use longerscrews if your equipment requires them.)

Corner Bracket

The Rack-Mount CabinetInside the lectern cabinet, beneath the console, you'll find rails for rack-mounting equipment. In fact, the X-Port 30 unit is rack-mounted inside this mini-cabinet, taking up two rack-mountunits. Use the remaining nine rack-mount units to secure your equipment.

NOTE: Use the bottom three rack-mount units for equipment with a depth of 8" (20.3 cm) orless. Equipment deeper than this measurement might interfere with the lectern connectionpanel housing.

System RequirementsThe X-Port 30 unit uses serial connections. However, if either of your computers has aUniversal Serial Bus (USB) port, you can easily connect the extension cables to the USB portby using one of the SMART USB adapters (USB-FRU with a gender adapter or the shorterUSB-ADP). Contact SMART Technologies Inc. for information on how to order a SMART USBadapter.

USB connectivity is not supported by the Windows NT® 4.0 operating system, nor by theWindows 95 operating system (unless you have service release 2.1 or 2.5).

NOTE: While the console has a DVI port, all other video connection ports for the lectern areHD DB15 (RGB) connections.

The SMART Sympodium L-150 lectern doesn't currently support the SMART Board softwareversion that works with the UNIX® operating systems.

Care and CleaningPeriodically dust the lectern using a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth withwater.

IMPORTANT: Don't use glass cleaner, paint thinner, benzene, alcohol or any other solvent toclean the screen.

The stylus is a sealed unit that contains electronics but no batteries. Attempting to open thestylus will damage the electronics, making the stylus unusable. To clean the stylus, use a softcloth with mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid, diluted with water.

IMPORTANT: Don't immerse the stylus in liquid.

Cleaning the Screen SurfaceWe recommend that you clean a heavily used screen once a week to maintain optimal clarity.

IMPORTANT: Do not use any organic solvent, such as alcohol, glass cleaner, or even milddetergent to clean the screen. These cleaners can damage the screen's finish.

Use a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth with water. Apply only lightpressure and do not make the surface wet.

Changing Stylus TipsDuring regular usage, the stylus tip slowly wears down. Replace the tip when you notice itbecoming short or angular. An angular tip may damage the screen.

The lectern comes with five extra stylus tips and an o-ring tool to assist in tip replacement. Ifyou require more replacement tips, contact your dealer.

To replace the stylus tip:1 Use the o-ring tool to grab the stylus tip and slide it straight out of the stylus.

TroubleshootingMost problems are the result of loose or improper connections. Check that all connectors arefirmly plugged into the connection ports. If the problem persists, use this section to determineits source. If no suggestions solve the problem, call SMART Technical Support (see page 32for contact information).

Screen ProblemsTo be fully functional, the lectern must have proper communication between the console and:

• the screen

• the input sources connected through the X-Port 30 unit, shown by the Communicationsindicator

Every time the stylus touches the screen, the Status indicator illuminates. If it doesn't, there ismost likely a stylus hardware problem. Call SMART Technical Support (see page 32).

When both the Communications and Power indicators are green, proper communication existsbetween the screen and the X-Port 30 unit. If no indicators are illuminated, check the powerconnections inside the lectern and the connection to the wall. Also check the connectionsbetween the control panel and the X-Port 30 unit.

Image ProblemsWhen using the interactive screen, you may notice some anomalies in the image appearance. These irregularities aren't indications that the screen is defective, as they are commonly foundin Thin Film Transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display screens.

• On the screen, you may see a very small number of pixels permanently illuminated or notilluminated at all.

• When you're writing on the screen, you may notice the temporary appearance of a moirépattern, which is an irregular, wavy geometric pattern. This is a result of hard, downwardpressure on the screen surface and it's temporary.

A Moiré Pattern

• When a still image displays on the screen for a long period of time without the screenbeing refreshed, an after-image may remain for a short time. The longer the originalimage remains on the screen, the longer the after-image will last and the darker it will be.This is normal and won't damage the screen.
