SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION FUNCTIONALITY SMART S-500 is a State of the Art universal Combustible and Toxic Gas Detectors, a reliable, continuous monitoring device to protect people and your high value investments. SMART S-500 Gas Detector employs a powerful RISC Microprocessor which provides self diagnostic, serial line communications RS-485 for MODBUS protocol, One-Man calibration features firmware resident. SMART S-500 Gas Detector is suitable to be employed with almost all gas sensing elements / electrochemical cell available in the market. SMART S-500 Gas Detector employs a unique highly coupled Pellistor beads, or Electrochemical Cell, sensing elements supported by a plug-in cards. Sensors are field replaceable protected in a S.S.316 housing ATEX certified. The electronics enclosure is light alloy epoxy red painted ATEX certified. SMART S-500 technology has been developed to offer long life durable and strength device to protect your plant and to provides high reliability with easy and low cost maintenance. SMART S-500 HC transmitter represents a technological innovation in the combustible gas detection field. The electronics based on a microprocessor RISC, that visualizes on digital display 16 characters the gas concentration value, verify constantly power value of each single circuit any possible Fault as short circuit or Pellistor open. A Watch-Dog, circuit check the correct working of the analogue and digital logic sections. Any working anomaly are visualized on a digital display and by a fault relay, on terminal boards. SMART S-500 HC has a proportional output related to the concentration detected that can be interfaced directly to a PLC/DCS or to a generic system which receive 4÷20mA signal. (1÷22mA for calibration and diagnostic) It is possible to set the value of Warning and Alarm. The signals are visualized by the display with “Warning” and “Alarm”, along with “Fault”. These indications are available as free voltage contacts on the interface terminal board. In case of large leak of gas to be measured, the Over-range indication will be displayed.

The firmware has been made to guide the operator, helping him for a simple and accurate calibration and maintenance. One point of calibration, equal to about 50% of measure field, will be enough to obtain a correct calibration.

An exclusive mode of remote calibration (also via serial interface) is available and allows the SMART DETECTOR S-500 to receive an external command, when the Zero calibration starts and to control automatically the cylinder solenoid valve (open-close), with sample gas, for “Span” calibration. Through the serial line full duplex 485 standard RTU MODBUS, it is possible to set and adjust the analogue value corresponding to the gas concentration read by the sensors as well as all sensor functional parameters.

1.2 DETECTOR To wire the sensor SMART S500 Terminals it is necessary to unscrew the Allen locking screw, remove the upper glass cap and repeat the operation for the central part of the explosion proof housing. Then take out the circuit leave it up making sure that interconnecting cable remain in its own position, then operate on terminals screws related to this connection. Also terminal screw must be pulling out in order to simplify the wiring connections. Particular attention must be used during operation of screwing up the central glass cap in order to avoid any damage. In order to follow state of the art related to explosion proof area rules it is necessary to lock all parts using the blocking screw above mentioned (See section 9.1). fig. 1 fig. 2

1.3 SENSOR S-500 HC sensor has been designed with an innovative technology that permit to increase the reliability of detection, to reduce maintenance costs and fast sensor replacement in case of damages or fault. S 500 HC sensing element is made by two high temperature matched Pellistor beads. The beads are mounted on Teflon support to insulate them from external temperature change. The printed circuit with Pellistor beads is located in a S.S.316 INOX-316-L environmental resistant to aggressive agents. Sensor’s body is physically separated from electronics or terminal enclosure by an epoxy resin Flame Resistant. The sensor is made by two mechanical parts a sensor body base and sensor coverage separable on field, this permit the Pellistor beads replacement directly on the field without disconnecting power on electronics detector.
