Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Computer boards and components contain electrostatic sensitive devices. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage components. To protect the PCB and other components against damage from static electricity, you should follow some precautions whenever you work on your computer.

Power down and unplug your computer system when working on the inside.

Hold components by the edges and try not to touch the IC chips, leads, or circuitry.

Use a grounded wrist strap before handling computer components.

Place components on a grounded antistatic pad or on the bag that came with the component whenever the components are separated from the system.

Only store the product in its original ESD-protected packaging. Retain the original packaging in case you need to return the product to MEN for repair.

ConformityMEN products are no ready-made products for end users. They are tested according tothe standards given in the Technical Data and thus enable you to achieve certification ofthe product according to the standards applicable in your field of application.

RoHSSince July 1, 2006 all MEN standard products comply with RoHS legislation.

Since January 2005 the SMD and manual soldering processes at MEN have already beencompletely lead-free. Between June 2004 and June 30, 2006 MEN’s selected componentsuppliers have changed delivery to RoHS-compliant parts. During this period any changeand status was traceable through the MEN ERP system and the boards gradually becameRoHS-compliant.

WEEE Application

Nevertheless, MEN is registered as a manufacturer in Germany. The registration numbercan be provided on request.

1 Product Overview

1.1 Product Description

Maintenance Free and Extremely Rugged

The NM10 family is a range of fanless, smart managed and maintenance-free Ethernetswitches, which have been specifically designed for use in rolling stock applicationsoperating in extremely rugged environmental conditions.

Versatile Application Possibilities

The NM10 range of switches provide eight channels at the front panel, accessiblethrough M12 connectors, covering different application requirements, and either 100Mb or 1 Gb Ethernet interfaces.

Compliant to Railway and Automotive Standards

The voltage supply for the NM10 Ethernet Switch is designed for maximum flexibility andsupports wide range input supply voltages from 14.4 to 154 VDC, and meets all EN50155 requirements for voltages ranging from 24 to 110 VDC.

Conduction Cooled

The NM10 Ethernet Switch is designed for fanless operation at temperatures rangingfrom -40 to +70°C. The NM10 features IP40 protection when surface-mounted andcooling fins which serve as a heatsink for the internal electronics, and in this wayprovides conduction cooling.

Familiar Family Concept

As a member of MEN's family of extremely rugged industrial network boxes, the NM10provides the same flexibility and scalability, as well as a look and feel which is commonto the family.

1.5 Product IdentificationMEN user documentation may describe several different models and/or design revisionsof the NM10. You can find information on the article number, the design revision and theserial number on a label affixed to the chassis.

Article number: Indicates the product family and model. This is also MEN’s order-ing number. To be complete it must have 9 characters.

Revision number: Indicates the design revision of the product.

Serial number: Unique identification assigned during production.

If you need support, you should communicate these numbers to MEN.

2 Getting Started

2.1 Unpacking the NM10After unpacking, check whether there are any transport or other damages on thesystem. If one of the following situations arises, have the equipment checked by servicepersonnel:

The power cable or plug is damaged.

Liquid has penetrated into the equipment.

The equipment has been exposed to moisture.

The equipment does not work well, or you cannot get it to work according to theuser manual.

The equipment has been dropped and damaged.

The equipment has obvious signs of breakage.

2.2 Scope of DeliveryThe delivery includes the following accessories:

NM10 Network Box

2 x M5 Mounting screws

Electric Shock and Fire Hazard Caused by Damaged Device

Damaged equipment may be under dangerous voltage and can cause fire. Damaged equipment has unpredictable behavior and characteristics.

Prevent damaged equipment from being installed and put into operation.

Mark the damaged equipment and keep it under lock and key.

Send the equipment to repair immediately.

Damage from Condensation

When the equipment has been subjected to low temperatures or extreme temperature variations, condensation can form on or inside the system. Humidity causes short circuits in electric circuits and damages the system. To avoid damages, do the following:

Store the equipment in a dry environment.

Ensure that the equipment has the same temperature as the environment before starting it up.

Do not subject the equipment to the direct radiation of a heating device.

Wait until the equipment has dried completely or wait 12 hours before switching on the equipment.

Please contact MEN should any of these items be missing or damaged.

2.3 Mounting the NM10Before installing the NM10, make sure that the installation site has been prepared andthat the operating environment meets the equipment requirements.

The NM10 network box has been designed to either sit on a flat surface or be securelymounted to a wall or similar surface.

Please check all hardware requirements before mounting the NM10, as any modifications necessary to the system are difficult, or even impossible to do after the network box has been mounted.

Please make sure to use the connectors listed in this manual. Other connectors might cause damage to the device.

Please connect the M12 connectors before mounting the NM10.

Please pay attention to the mounting instructions and product dimensions as provided in Figure 4, NM10 dimension diagram on page 16 to ensure correct installation of the network box.

2.3.1 Safety Instructions for Mounting

Risk of Damages or Injuries

Make sure that the cabinet or the wall where you want to install the system supports the weight of the system.

Do not put the system on top of other equipment. When the system drops it can cause damages and injuries.

Risk of Fire Through Overheating

Make sure that the equipment does not overheat. Overheating can cause fire or malfunction of the device. Conformity to standards expires.

Mount the equipment only in the mounting position described in this document and adhere to the environmental conditions specified in the Technical Data.

Leave enough space above and below the system to enable the required airflow (at least 15 cm).

Do not cover openings which are required for the airflow.

Do not install the system near any heat sources (e.g., radiators, heat registers).

Risk of Damage to the System

Keep the system away from liquids. Avoid exposure to dripping or splashing.

2.3.2 Wall-Mounting the NM10

When mounting the NM10 to a wall, first ensure that the wall surface has been preparedand that the mounting screws have been installed as listed below:

» Ensure that the mounting location provides at least 15 cm of space around the net-work box housing to ensure correct ventilation for cooling.

» Carefully measure and mark the position of the two required screw holes to matchthe position of the mounting holes on the network box.

» Secure the two M5 countersink head screws at the marked location, making sure toleave a gap of at least 3.5 mm between the wall surface and the screw head.

» Place the NM10 so that the wide openings of the mounting holes are over the screwheads, then slide the box down so that the screw heads slip into the narrow part ofthe mounting hole.

» Securely tighten the mounting screws to prevent potential damage which could becaused by vibration. The recommended tightening torque is between 2.0 Nm and2.2 Nm.

2.3.3 Horizontal Mounting

When mounting the NM10 overhead or onto a table, first ensure that the surface hasbeen prepared and that the mounting screws have been installed as listed below:

2.4 Connecting and Starting

2.4.1 Safety Instructions for Connection» Read all labels and warnings on the equipment carefully; especially the power con-

figuration and coding label affixed to the system chassis.

» Adhere to the following safety instructions before you connect the NM10:

Works on the computer system may only be carried out by personnel qualified for the specific task, who, based on their training and experience, are able to identify risks and avoid potential hazards when working with these products/systems.

The switch must be protected by an external fuse for a current of maximum 2 A.

Implement a readily accessible disconnect device external to the system.

Make sure that the voltage supplied by the external power supply conforms with the voltage given on the power configuration and coding label.

Adhere to the wiring rules valid in your country when connecting the system.

2.4.2 Connecting an Earthing CableThe NM10 features an earthing connection.

Carry out the following steps to connect the earthing cable:

» Use an earthing cable with a cross section of at least 4 mm².

» Slide the cable onto the stud between the washer and the lock washer, as indicatedin the following illustration.

» Fasten the cable by tightening the nut.

Connect the earthing cable before making any other connections! A protective earth connection is essential for the system to meet its EMC specifications.

When disassembling the system, always detach the earthing cable last.

2.4.3 Starting Up the SystemThe switch is delivered with installed firmware and is a standalone, smart managedEthernet switch that does not require any external software. It features a HTTP Webinterface for configuring the firmware.

Alternatively, as a safety feature, the switch can be delivered pre-configured and the webaccess can be locked, to prevent further changes to the firmware.

After connecting all Ethernet devices to be served by the switch, simply connect asuitable power source (with respective input voltage) and the switch will boot up with itsdefault settings.

2.5 Accessing the Ethernet SwitchOnce the system has powered up, you can access the switch using its base address withhttp.
