With keys, access cards and passwords at risk of being lost or copied, makers have made smart door locks ‘smarter’ by adding the capability to recognize authorized users’ fingerprints and faces. A number of releases can also be synced with mobile phone apps for remote monitoring of status and control. Adding, deleting and freezing users, and checking opening records are administrator tasks done easily on smartphones.

This does not mean though that typical unlocking mechanisms are left behind in terms of improvement. Nanjing Ebdel Technological Development Co. Ltd’s model BY-GHT01 third-generation smart door lock uses ZigBee technology. To unlock the model, users can use cards, their fingerprints, passwords, keys and mobile phones. Remote monitoring and control are supported by the lock. The battery that powers the product is good for 18,000 lock-unlock cycles. The door lock has backup power for emergency situations. It is quoted at $300.

Shenzhen Yuankun Lock Co. Ltd offers the smart door lock YK Series model. Users can unlock the door via passwords and/or their fingerprints or keys. The door lock operates from -20 to 70 C with humidity between 10 and 90 percent. It lasts 10,000 cycles.
