Agenda

1.No smart cities without citizens

2.Digitalization: a new frontier for mobility

3.Citizens react differently to digitalization

Smart city: a new concept or just peculiar to cities?

3

Page 4: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

… but should also be congenial towards their citizens

Smart cities should not be limited to greater efficiency through IT tools

and datacomputing…

What they like or look for:

• Jobs and economic wealth

• Studies

• Efficiency of public services

and utilities

• Leisure

• Social life

• Wide range of opportunities

What they dislike:

• Pollution

• Road congestion

• Noises and disturbances

• High cost of housing

In a smart city, citizens would like to have the benefits of the city

without the disadvantages

Page 6: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

Citizens aim more and more to be part of city changes…

… while internet and social networks give them very efficient

facilities to communicate and mobilize6

Half of the world urban population lives in towns with less

than 500 000 inhabitants

When thinking about smart cities, don’t think only at major

metropolises or at modern new cities

7

Page 8: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

In France, 45% of the population lives in areas with less than 150 000

inhabitants

They need, as well as their visitors, to have access to a « smart

territory » approach8

Page 9: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

Think at territory level, not just at city level

11

1. Better knowledge of mobility needs

2. Efficiency of public transportation

3. New services

Mobility: Digitalization widely opens new possibilities

A frequent mistake to avoid: don’t confuse flows and individuals. Make

sure you measure unique travellers

14

Page 15: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

About 1 000 people seen on a bus line after 9 pm, but 5200 different

travellers on a week and 12 800 on a month

15

Page 16: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

Another mistake : don’t overestimate business trip purpose

Through internet, supply can meet demand to create new mobility

services, often based on sharing economy

Chauffeur driven car (i.e. unregulated taxis)

Car pooling

Car sharing

Private car rental

Motor scooter or bike urban self service

On demand public transportation services:

- Ride sharing

- Flexible line (fixed starting point and time but flexible route)

- Virtual line (fixed route but started only if required)

Page 30: Smart city & Mobility - CODATUThe Keolis-Netexplo Observatory of digital mobility 25 A world watch of digital innovations ~ 2 000 innovations analyzed ~ 200 selected A large survey

Some convictions on smart mobility

Smart cities will be cities offering a package of public and private mobility

services as a choice.

In some cases, regulation will be needed (e.g. data, use of public money, use

of scarce spaces,…)

Digitalization will offer a strong personalization through apps but

digitalization must also be collective and free

Key attention should be paid to less integrated people: no one should be left

behind!

Digitization should not mean lack of humanization
