DESCRIPTION

Presentation installed at the Invisible Cities Graduate Symposium and Expo, held in Kitchener, Ontario on October 26th, 2013 through the University of Waterloo's Critical Media Lab. This presentation summarizes my research on smart city technology and the idea of using big data to better understand cities.

Today, more than

50% of the

world’s population

live in cities

Page 6: Smart Cities - Installation

…and that’s only going to GROW

Page 7: Smart Cities - Installation

In China alone

300-400 million people

will move to cities in the next 15 years

With this growth, cities will face

Through this technology, cities have become

“vast repositories of information,

endlessly collecting

and archiving

DATA.”

Page 32: Smart Cities - Installation

“Social tools can be layered over the city, giving us real-time access to information about the things and people that surround us, helping us to connect in new ways and giving rise to a data-driven society.”

How can we tap into this data

to better understand our cities?

OPEN DATA

PERSONAL DATA

We Feel Fine harvests human feelings from the world,

searching weblogs every few minutes

for the phrases "I feel" and "I am feeling” and identifying the "feeling" expressed.

Page 37: Smart Cities - Installation

The result is a database of several

million human feelings.

Using a series of playful interfaces, the feelings can be searched and sorted.
