TEKS Related to the Lesson
(12) Organisms and environments. The student knows that living systems at all levels of organization demonstrate the complementary nature of structure and function. The student is expected to:
(C) recognize levels of organization in plants and animals, including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms;
(D) differentiate between structure and function in plant and animal cell organelles, including cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondrion, chloroplast, and vacuole;

Rationale
Students need to understand the structure of the cell in order to fully understand what are bodies are made up of. We are entirely made of cells just like the majority of the other organisms around us. Cells are a building block of living things and are an extremely important topic in life science.

Cells
Cells are the building blocks of many living things. We will study to major types of cells, animal and plant cells. Cells contain many different organelles that have a specific function to help the cell survive.

Lysosome
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
Lysosomes are the digestion centers for the cell. They are common in animal cells, and rare in plant cells.

Nucleus
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The nucleus contains the cells DNA and is sometimes known as the brain of the cell.

Cytoplasm
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The cytoplasm is made up of cytosol. It is the jellylike substance inside the cell that all of the organelles float in. The cytoplasm is not an organelle.

Mitochondrion
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The mitochodrion provides the cell with energy. It is sometimes called the powerhouse of the cell.

Cell Membrane
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The membrane is responsible for protecting the cell. It is made up of layers of lipids. The membrane also controls the entry and exit of materials from the cell.

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The rough endoplasmic reticulum is covered with ribosomes that synthesize proteins. The endoplasmic reticulum is a surface for chemical activity.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The smooth ER plays different roles in many cells. It usually is used as a surface for different chemical activity in the cell.

Golgi Aparatus
Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell
The golgi aparatus is a stack of membrane bound vessicles that store and release chemicals waiting for transport around the cell.

Cell Wall
Return to Plant Cell
The cell wall is a strong barrier around plant cells. The cell wall helps the plant maintain its shape.

Vacuole
Return to Plant Cell
Vacuoles are rather large in plant cells and store water, waste and nutrients. The vacuole could also be known as the warehouse of the cell.

Chloroplast
Return to Plant Cell
Chloroplasts are found only in plant cells. They contain chlorophyll responsible for the green color of most plants. The food for a plant is made in the chloroplasts.

CentrioleCentrioles are part of the cytoskeleton of the cell. The centrioles help the cell to divide. Cetrioles are only found in animal cells.
