What is a Smart Card?

A smart card, chip card, or integrated

circuit card (ICC) is any pocket-sized

card with embedded integrated

circuits.

A smart card is a device that includes

an embedded integrated circuit that

can be either a secure microcontroller

or equivalent intelligence with internal

memory or a memory chip alone.

The card connects to a reader with

direct physical contact.

Continuation,,

In smart Card System we have the

Inbuilt Memory Space to Store Data

Securely.

Smart cards have unique ability to

store large amounts of data to carry

out their own on-card functions and to

interact intelligently with a smart card

reader.

It is available in a variety of form

factors, including plastic cards, key

fobs, watches, subscriber identification

modules used in GSM mobile phones,

and USB-based tokens.

Design:

A Smart Card Contains a credit card like

simple plastic card. Instead of the Thin

Magnetic Strip in Credit Cards it has a

golden pad(microprocessor).

Its Dimension Is 85.60mm by 53.98 mm

(3.370 in × 2.125 in).

Communicates with external services via

card-reading devices, such as ticket

readers, ATMs, DIP reader, etc.

Types of Smart Cards:Contact Smart Card:

A contact smart card must be inserted into a smart card reader with a direct connection to a conductive contact plate on the surface of the card (typically gold plated). Transmission of commands, data, and card status takes place over these physical contact points.

Contactless Smart Card:

A contactless card requires only close proximity to a reader. Both the reader and the card have antennae, and the two communicate using radio frequencies (RF) over this contactless link. Most contactless cards also derive power for the internal chip from this electromagnetic signal.

Widely Used In:

First It was used In European Countries and nowadays its being Widely used in many American Countries..

Page 10: Smart card Technology

Advantages:

Easy to use.

Individuals gain increased convenience.

Multiple tasks can be done by a single card.

An important key in E-governance.

Enhanced security.

A handsome way to deal with the things.

Page 11: Smart card Technology

Why Smart Card?

Improve the convenience and security of any transaction.

Provide tamper-proof storage of user and account identity.

Provide vital components of system security.

Protect against a full range of security threats .

Page 12: Smart card Technology

Applications: Financial

> As ATM cards, Fuel cards, SIMs.

> As electronic wallet.

Identification (Dude! Be Smart.)

Public Transit.

Educational Institutes.

> Tracking Student attendance.

> As an electronic purse to pay various bills.

> Access control of some buildings.

In healthcare.

Security With Smart Card:

Contains a tamper-resistant security system (for

example a secure crypto processor and a secure file system) and provides security services (e.g., protects in-memory

information).

Managed by an administration system which securely interchanges information and configuration settings with the card, controlling card blacklisting and application-data updates.

The standard security goals like

Authentication

Password

Confidentiality

Integrity, can easily be provided by using smart cards..

Page 14: Smart card Technology

Problems:

High probability for damage of card.

Card is small, less weight and thus there is high possibility for card lost.

Malware can break smart card security model.

Lack of standards for functionality & security.
