Designing and Optimizing Electric AssetsToday’s electric utilities are demanding smarter, more complete products to help deliver business process solutions more effectively and efficiently. In the engineering phase of the asset management lifecycle, designers are being challenged. They need to meet increasing demand for new services while reducing design and construction costs and improving reliability of the as-built facilities. As a result , network analysis and optimization of designs are important tools for utilities to lower costs while ensuring the best engineered network that maintains a high level of reliability. However, network analysis tools are generally expensive, complex, standalone applications that are not well integrated into the design environment.

GE’s Smallworld Analysis and Optimization was developed with state-of-the-art power system analysis algorithms and is imbedded as an “engine” in Smallworld Core Spatial Technology, providing analysis and optimization tools to any organization managing electric networks using the Smallworld application. Smallworld Analysis and Optimization is particularly well suited to support the plan/design/build phase of the asset management lifecycle, providing users with the benefits of advanced analysis algorithms without having to be experts.

Solution Strength and Addressing Business ChallengesSmallworld Analysis and Optimization provides low voltage (secondary) and medium voltage (primary) load flow, short circuit (fault), and flicker analysis using a diversified loading model. Users can perform secondary circuit optimization for conductor and transformer sizing based on short-circuit , flicker and voltage drop as well as check for overloads and voltage drop problems. Any number of customer and special loads can be placed at demand points before the services are actually available, giving the designer the capability to accurately model the future network. With the advanced functionality available, analysis results and optimization recommendations can be seamlessly integrated with the design workflow, providing easy access to designers of any skill level. Sample integrations are available for Smallworld Design Manager, providing a completely integrated system for design analysis and optimization. For example, optimization recommendations can automatically update or replace proposed devices in the GIS, allowing analyses to be rerun immediately while ensuring that engineering standards are met. Optimization results can also be integrated with the secondary design approval process so that only designs that meet the optimization criteria will be considered for approval.

Addressing Business ChallengesSmallworld Analysis and Optimization provides load flow and design optimization tools that enforce enterprise asset design standards, enabling the business to design the network right the first time.

The major challenges facing electric utilities are increased demand for electricity on an aging infrastructure and frequent , more restrictive regulatory requirements. To accurately represent their asset network and provide traceability of assets and completeness of data, electric utilities need to optimize all key processes within the plan, build, operate and maintain lifecycle. Due to the inherently spatial nature of networks, a geospatial system like Smallworld with an integrated Analysis and Optimization solution provides the best way to support these key processes.

Proven Benefit and Business ValueSmallworld Analysis and Optimization offers unique and unparalleled value to electric utilities:

Low risk

GE offers a mature, market leading Smallworld solution with rich functionality that has been deployed successfully in a wide range of environments.

Single network view

GE’s fully integrated Smallworld geospatial solution provides a consolidated view of the whole network, avoiding having to maintain data in multiple systems.

Reduced integration costs

GE uses the latest industry data standards to support enterprise interoperability. Use of OGC® (OPENGIS® Consortium) standards and a Service Orientated Architecture reduces integration costs and insulates the system from change.

Total Cost of Ownership

The rich functionality provided by Smallworld Electric Office means GE can support customer requirements through simple configuration and minor extensions rather than expensive customization.

Architected for the Future

The Smallworld solution is based upon modern industry standard technology such as HTML5 and Java, which reduces total cost of ownership, simplifies integration with other solutions, and maximizes reuse.

Single network view and consolidation of data and tools

GE’s fully integrated Smallworld geospatial solution with Analysis and Optimization provides a consolidated view of the whole network during the design process, avoiding having to maintain or refer to data in multiple systems.

Smallworld Analysis and Optimization enables the generation of significant business value in the design phase of the asset lifecycle.

Challenges:

• Designing a network to meet new levels of energy consumption, forecast demand and help to control costs

• Maintaining or enforcing design standards with the design creation process

• Design must be quick and efficient, ensuring timely delivery of energy infrastructure when needed

Solution: Using the network data held in the Smallworld GIS combined with other data from enterprise systems, Smallworld Electric Office, Smallworld Design Manager, and Smallworld Analysis and Optimization together provide automated configurable, design functionality to quickly and efficiently design the required network and electrical equipment changes, while enforcing each electric utilities established standards.

Benefit: By providing configurable power flow standards and equipment optimization controls, utility designers can design changes to the network the right way the first time and see a productivity increase of up to 15% for their network designers.
