ADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER
The most important: It is a renewable form of energy Energy is rather cheap,
because of low costs; The pollution is minimal; These plants are largely
automated (no employees); Station can be of any size, it
depends on the river and stream
Stations can operate for many years;
Small HEPS are more economic for home owners than solar power
Erika’s dad made a comparison: «There was a useless field, nobody needed it, but then one day a road was made and people were surprised how they could have lived before without that road. The field became useful. The same is with the river»
Small power stations in Latvia
Ambeļi
THE RIVER DUBNA
We visited three stations. Ērika’s dad Mr Romanovs was our guide, he told us about these stations: The first station was
build in 2001.They produce
500kW per hour, and each family consumes about 200 per month
THE RIVER DUBNA
There are about 180 small stations in Latvia and they make 15% of all the hydro power in Latvia.
And three of them are in Ambeļi. We had a great opportunity to have a walk, enjoy the nature and learn a lot as well.
