    Going Forward

Many other regional meetings, e.g.,SERMACS, November 12-16, 2013,Atlanta GA, www.sermacs2013.org,/ offer entrepreneurial and small

business programming, but SCHBcannot become directly involvedwithout your help. ACS regionalmeetings are a great, affordable wayto get involved at a site closer to

your home. See www.acs.org/meet-ings , nd the one most convenientfor you, and propose a session or two. SCHB can provide nancialsupport, a poster, literature, banner stands, and other resources to makeyour effort successful; the exposureof being listed as an SCHB orga-nizer at a regional meeting can beinvaluable. In the upcoming months,SCHB will prioritize its presence at2014 regional meetings and wedlike your name on one or more.SCHB will also provide scholarshipsfor its members to enroll in the ACSLeadership courses at every regionalmeeting. Contact any member of the SCHB Executive Committee for more information.

CC Biotech by Martha KnightDr. Martha Knight Founder, CC Biotech

After many years of ACS mem- bership, I have nally joined theSCHB. In the last few years atCC Biotech LLC, Rockville MD,I have been developing new chro-matography instrumentation for large molecules. Lets see if mynew membership in the Division of Small Chemical Business is just the

ticket to help me launch the prod-ucts into the chemistry market.

Even though this is my secondsmall business (I ran Peptide Tech-nologies Corp. for 20 yrs and soldit) I am still learning new things.Mainly because, not unlike others,I have founded a company makingsomething I am passionately inter-ested in. CC Biotech is an instru-ment manufacturer but I am a pep-

tide chemist--not an engineer. I didnot even think about this however when I started. I have engaged oth-ers with the skills needed thanks toTom Finn and Dr. Yoichiro Ito.Wehave moved along with the productdevelopment, leveraging severalSBIR grants and supplying new ro-tors to existing users of countercur-rent chromatography (CCC).

The road so far has been slow but atthis point we introduce new rotors/columns that can fractionate largemolecules, proteins and nanotechcompounds. This has not been done

by CCC before. It feels exciting tonally face the marketplace which isnew and wider than for my previouscompany. That is why I am lookingforward to exhibiting new instru-ments to my fellow chemists at ACSmeetings and showing the new capa-

    bilities for purifying large syntheticmolecules.

Diane Grob SchmidtBUILDING BRIDGES TO A

BRIGHTER FUTUREOur world today is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. We facea global reset from many changes

after effects of the great recession;unemployment; a competitive globalworkforce and economy; universal, net-worked communication; racing techno-logical change; heightened awareness

    Bryan Balazs

I am both honored and humbled to bea candidate for ACS President and, if elected, would enthusiastically serveas your ambassador, for chemistry andour profession. The 137-year historyof the ACS encompasses extraordinaryaccomplishments expressed through its

journals, information resources, divi-sions, local sections and committees. Our professions scienti c advancesare astounding: from a deeper under-standing of molecular structure and

properties, to cures for diseases, totechnologies to bene t humanity Itsan exciting time to be a chemist!

My passions are evident from theimpact Ive had locally, nationally andinternationally (see www.bryanbalazs.com). If elected my priorities would

be:Science, Technology, Engineer-ing and Math. STEM education isat the foundation of everything westrive to achieve through the ACS.Given the issues of an interconnectedglobal environment and the need for technological solutions to address theworlds challenges, I would advo-cate for programs to provide greater exposure to STEM earlier, among allgroups but especially those for whichSTEM access is lacking.

Careers An education in scienceremains a great investment, andemployers want the analytical think-ing and advanced skills that resultfrom hiring chemistry graduates. I

pledge to help enable job-seekers toidentify a broader setof opportunitiesincluding non-traditional employersof chemists, while simultaneously

providing more tools to address thedynamic nature of the job searchenvironment.

Public OutreachWe have an excellent cadre of memberswho promote chemistry and, with theinvolvement of more younger members,we can improve the public perception of chemistry and thus facilitate our effortsin education and careers. Lets engagethe thousands of Student Members, who are connected and enthusiastic, to

inform the public of critical investmentsto maintain our lead in education andtechnology.

I would appreciate your vote lets leadthe ACS into an exciting future!

    Charles E. Kolb, Jr.

Its an honor to ask for your support asa candidate for ACS president. ACS is avibrant, vital organization, successfullyserving many members professionalneeds. It is also a very important sourceof scienti c information and insight for members and the planets policymakers.

However, we live in a very challengingand rapidly changing world. Vener-able institutions can become outmodedand irrelevant surprisingly quickly. Itsvitally important that we ensure ACSsfuture relevance and effectiveness. Weneed ACS to help our current mem-

bers deal with todays scienti c andeconomic challenges. We also need anACS prepared to meet the needs of our youngest members over their 50-year

professional lives. To ensure ACSscontinued success I believe we mustachieve three long-term goals:

First, we need a robust, innovativeand sustainable industrial base.ACS must work much harder to helpdevelop the strategies required for faster evolution of an agile and sustain-

    cont on pg 9

able chemistry-enabled industrial sector, where ACS members can innovate,

produce and thrive. I believe that ACScan serve as a catalyst, bringing indus-trial leaders together to determine howto overcome both technical and non-technical barriers.

Second, our members and students need

expanded understanding of chemis-trys role in the world blocking moreef cient, cost-effective and environmen-tally acceptable processes and products.ACS needs to help educators at alllevels to effectively present the beautyof chemistry. But we also need to helpthem convey the critical role chemistrycan and must play to sustain and en-hance our economy, security, health andenvironment.

Third, we need members prepared toseize the future. Nearly all the criti-cal challenges we face have signi cantchemical components. ACS must helpmembers better understand how their vision and skills can contribute to amore prosperous and sustainable future.

Lets work together to achieve thesethree goals.

    North Carolina Senateapproves fracking

chemicals provisions by Gavin Bennett 8 July 2013 The North Carolina state Senate hasapproved a bill amending the statesenvironmental laws, which includesa provision to protect con dential

business information related tochemicals used in hydraulic fractur-ing (fracking) operations. Under the

bill, North Carolinas Mining andEnergy Commission may review,

but not take ownership of, data andinformation related to chemicals andconstituents used in hydraulic frac-turing uids that is designated as atrade secret. The bill (HB 94) alsodirects the commission to developrules regarding how the chemicalfamily or other descriptive informa-tion on chemicals designated tradesecrets may be disclosed publicly,

through an online registry. The billwas approved by the Senate on 3July. After being released by theSenate Clerks of ce, HB 94 mustgo to the state House for approval. If approved, the bill would then goto the Governor for his signature or veto; if not approved by the House,

both House and Senate have anopportunity to confer further on the

bill, before it would be nalized, rat-i ed and sent to the Governor. Staff

for state Representative Chuck Mc-Grady, the bills lead sponsor, said itis not possible to predict whether the

bill will pass before North Carolinas2013 legislative session concludes, which it is expected to, this month.Copyright 2013

    The ChemicalEntrepreneurship Council

Janet L. Bryant, CEC Chair 2012-2013

The Chemical EntrepreneurshipCouncil (CEC) is a collectivegrass-roots coalition of ACS orga-

nizations (and strategic partners)whose charters, missions andconstituencies include support for

business-minded chemists interestedin innovation and turning R&D intocompanies and jobs. Collaboratorsand partners include: the Division of Business Development and Man-agement (BMGT), the Division of Small Chemical Business (SCHB),the Committee on Science (COM-SCI), the Committee on Economicand Professional Affairs (CEPA),the Women Chemists Committee(WCC), and the National CollegiateInventors and Innovators Alliance(NCIIA). We have also interactedwith the Division of ProfessionalRelations (PROF) and invited themto join us for CECs monthly tele-conference meetings in the future.

The CEC was founded 2 years ago

after recognition that each of itsACS-constituent technical Divi-sions and national Committees wereindividually attempting to providesupport and entrepreneurial train-ing to ACS members. The CEC, asa collaborative coalition, attemptsto leverage the work of each of itsconstituent groups to integrate andcommunicate efforts and have agreater impact on and support toACS members by connecting mem-

    bers to those resources.

SCHB has led the charge regular-ly as part of CEC with outstandingsupport of programming for innova-tion and job creation. The ProgramChairs report in this newsletter issue highlights the many symposiaand events in the SCHB programgrid that will also be highlighted

and promoted by CEC to helpspread-the-word about them and, hopefully, increase attendance. TheSTEM Women in Innovation andInvesting (STEM-WII) symposium(Tuesday afternoon at the Indianap-olis national meeting), sponsored bySCHB and cosponsored by, WCC,

PROF Women Chemists Subdivi-sion, and BMGT is an excellentexample of the collaborative effortsof CEC member groups to bringvalue-added programming to ACSmembers. (The STEM-WII sympo-sium will also be recorded as part of the ACS online meeting content to

be made available post-meeting for those unable to attend in person!)

CECs Public Relations and Com-munications Committee will be ac-tive before and during the meetingusing social media venues such asFacebook https://www.facebook.com/ACSCEC and Twitter http://www.twitter.com/ACSCEC toshare late-breaking news andreminders. SCHBs own Jennifer MacLachlan is the driving force

behind those CEC communica-tions. Share a Tweet with her whenyou get a chance! We want toknow how youre enjoying the pro-gramming and events.

The CEC Roadmap to the Meet-ing (available online at CECs

Facebook and Twitter links above)highlights symposia, workshops andnetworking events (such as the JustCocktails event hosted by WCCthat will immediately follow theSTEM-WII symposium). The ele-ments of the Roadmap should be of interest to business-minded chemists

and are organized and highlightedfor each day of the national meetingto make them easier to nd and tinto your personal meeting schedule.
