As mobile broadband demand continues to grow dramatically,operators will need to increase capacity signicantly byadding small cells to complement their macro networks,forming heterogeneous networks, or HetNets. To support therapid evolution of these HetNets, NSN oers an end-to-endportfolio of products and services across both macro and small

cells that deliver the best mix of capabilities for the highestreturn on investment for operators.

With constantly rising demand for mobile data, it is essentialthat networks are modernized with all the capacity featuresavailable, such as 6-sector, active antennas and LTE roll-out.This will satisfy demand for the short-term, but in the long-term an underlay topology using small cells will deliver thenecessary increases in outdoor capacity for busy urban areasand extend coverage indoors, even within very large buildingsand at very dense trac locations.

Why Small Cells?Small Cells are the ideal complement to a macro network. As

a specic, targeted investment, they can deliver immediatebenets cost eciently. With the cell site so much closer tothe user, system eciency is much higher: a better, faster userexperience is delivered from a lower power, lower cost site.Advanced HetNet features will leverage small cells to supportdata demand realizing the potential of a liquid network.

Flexi Lite Base Station: Full-capacity micro / pico product ina compact packageWhether lling holes in rural coverage or providing hotspotcapacity in densely crowded areas of an urban network, theNSN Flexi Lite Base Station delivers the solution.

With the same capacity and running the same software asNSN’s macro base stations, the Flexi Lite Base Station canbe more easily integrated into a HetNet. With high powertransmitter output (up to 10+10W), high receiver sensitivity(-121dBm single branch) and MIMO support, the Flexi Lite BaseStation outperforms conventional microcellular base stations.

Flexi Lite Base Station can be deployed as a complete, one-boxbase station site for WCDMA/HSPA. Integration with backhaulproducts minimizes installation costs and lowers the site’svisual impact.

Flexi Zone LTE micro/pico base stations: Industry-smallestwith macro capabilitySupporting both FDD-LTE and TD-LTE in a variety of bands,outdoor/rugged base stations deliver up to 5W output in aninstall-anywhere 5 kg/5 liter box and oer the same featuresand capacity as macro base stations.

The range also includes a multi-radio Flexi Zone picocell basestation that integrates LTE and Wi-Fi in one unit. Combinedwith NSN Smart Wi-Fi real-time trac steering, operators cannow take advantage of unlicensed spectrum to double sitecapacity and improve the customer experience atbusy locations.

An indoor Flexi Zone LTE picocell base station with optionalWi-Fi support is also available for use in small and medium-sized indoor deployments.

With Flexi Zone controller, the micro/picocell becomes a FlexiZone access point for almost unlimited capacity or to servelarge, very large and dense indoor locations. The base stationcan use a building’s existing Ethernet cabling (even thatcarrying LAN data) to interconnect all Flexi Zone elements,eliminating the cost of new wiring for Distributed AntennaSystems (DAS) and Hybrid DAS systems.

All Flexi Zone base stations can incorporate HetNetinterference management and load balancing using NSN’sdynamic, load-balancing enhanced Inter Cell InterferenceCoordination (eICIC) algorithm for up to 30% higher capacity.

Flexi Zone: Innovation for capacity & large coverage

NSN has brought innovation to the Small Cells market withFlexi Zone: a Small Cell cluster solution for indoor and outdoor“hot zones”. The Flexi Zone access point combines low powerLTE and Wi-Fi into a self-conguring unit for indoor andoutdoor capacity underlay networks. These access pointscan operate as standalone micro/pico base stations for hotspots and then be evolved with the addition of the FlexiZone Controller, enabling hotspots to grow into hot zones,expanding limited coverage deployments to meet growingdemand. The individual units can be coordinated by a localizedcontroller to form a novel “zone” architecture that enablescapacity upgrades to an existing network without costlyreconguration.

The solution allows an operator to build almost unlimitedcapacity and coverage for up to very large indoor locationsby deploying clusters of access points across a hot zone and

enterprise/public indoor space. Flexi Zone uses LTE and Wi-Fiaccess points to complement the macro-cellular network,oering operators up to 50% lower overall costs thanconventional small cell deployments.

Flexi Zone controller can run a mix of indoor and outdoor cellswithin one cluster, making it the rst small cell solution capableof addressing large and very large indoor environments likeairports, university campuses and shopping malls.

Flexi Zone controller software can even be deployed on FlexiMultiradio 10 Base Stations. This provides a cost-eective wayto implement clusters of small cells for ll-in coverage nearexisting macro sites, for example in streets anked by high-risebuildings. It also enables early deployment of hot zones byre-using macro site infrastructure.

Flexi Zone controller also supports the integration of NSNRadio Application Cloud Server (RACS) to power LiquidApplications on a cluster of small cells. RACS is an IT serverinside the base station which deploys the latest cloudtechnology running on standard IT middleware. LiquidApplications is a technological breakthrough that turns abase station into a powerful and distributed network edgecomputing facility. Completely new services can be builtaround the operator’s base station network, using its proximityand direct connections to consumers and private networks.

Furthermore, the challenging architecture of older buildingsand the diculty in penetrating modern, energy-ecientbuildings are a signicant issue. NSN helps operators to createa strategy, architect the right product, and design, plan anddimension an in-building solution. NSN’s comprehensiveservices include site acquisition, supply, project managementand full turnkey implementation of a DAS system and SmallCells along with testing and optimization of the network.

Services for HetNets match trac with user experience Services for HetNets helps operators to analyze, plan, deploy,and optimize heterogeneous networks. NSN provides thebest and deepest analysis of hotspots, enabling operators tounderstand the impact of trac density – as well as devices,

applications, and end-user behaviour in congested urbanareas. Services for HetNets integrates small cell radio andbackhaul design, and includes macro, in-building, and Wi-Fisolutions to ensure a holistic approach. With analysis basedon demand, 20% cost savings can be achieved compared toblanketing the area with small cells. With this approach, 21%more subscribers can access the highest data speeds and nolonger need suer accessibility, retainability and throughputissues as congestion in urban areas is solved.
