Seems to be harmless but is a venomous animal,

Slow loris is one of the only two venomous mammals .

The second venomous mammals: platypus

Where does the venom from slow lorises come from?

A toxin secreted by the brachial gland, it’s an allergen that is

Similar to cat allergen.

The toxin is a defense mechanism against predators. It can be

found in slow lorises as young as 6 weeks old.

This toxin,usually released in timed of stress, emits disgusting and nauseating smells.

Where does the venom from slow lorises come from?

Slow lorises have little teeth on their lower jaw called tooth combs.

Due to constant licking for grooming, the toxin is mixed with

Saliva, the substance becomes toxic.

It’s why a bite of a slow loris can be painfull and cause illness.

Effects of a bite

Those who have severe allergies can go into anaphylactic shock minutes after a bite has happened.

Some symptoms of the venom include itchy red skin, a decrease in blood pressure, shock, painful muscle convulsions, respiratory, and heart problems.

There are some case of death in some circumstances.

A venomous animal has direct access to its venom.

Venom has to be injected into the body, introduced by a bite or a sting. 

Example: The Indian Cobra

is a venomous animal.

A poisonous animal, on the other hand, produces toxins that are poisonous.

And the poison is ingested or inhaled  into the body by the victim. 

Example: The blue dart frog

is a Poisonous animal.

Venomous or Poisonous?

Slow lorises are certainly not poisonous animal.

So they are venomous animals.

Not really, they didn’t have direct access to their venom.

It’s only due to the mix up of saliva and toxin in their brachial glands.

In fact, Slow lorises are venomous animals but it’s controversial.
