Earl Cadogan appointed the architect Henry Holland for the
development of ‘Hans Town’; Chelsea`s first big development.
1774Holland plans for Hans Place nursery gardens, together with Lancelot Capability Brown.
1797Nurseryman William Salisbury designed the London Botanical Gardens (south part of Sloane Place gardens).
1808Humphrey Repton was commissioned to work on a neighbouring garden north of the Botanical Garden.
1820Cadogan Place Gardens was made public. The layout of the Botanical Garden had been changed to suit its use as a public promenade.
1868/1874Chelsea became connected to the metropolis by the opening of Sloane
Square Station and completion of the Chelsea Riverside
Embankment.
1800-1820Buildings became denser and the former character of ribbon development began to be lost by infilling of the hinterland.
1660-1753Sloane Square, Sloane Street, Hans Place and Hans Town are all named after Sir Hans Sloane.
18th Century Chelsea was known as the ‘Village of Palaces’.
1717The foundations of
the Cadogan Estate were established.

1870 - 1890`Pont Street Dutch` style buildings replaced a lot of Georgian houses.

1873North Ritherdon
proposed improvements to the area, which
had become very run down.
1890-1910Many Georgian
and Queen Anne style buildings
were replaced by commercial buildings.
1987`The Great Storm`
destroyed the majority of the planting in the
garden, prompting replanting and the installation tennis
courts.
Post 1945After the war,
many bomb sites were replaced with multi- storey flats, and small shops;
surviving today as boutiques.
1950sNew Knightsbridge
traffic layout replaces many smaller buildings
with large office blocks.
1960s & 70sRecent developments include Denbigh House, Clunie House, Fordie House, Oakley House and Nos. 78-94. Cadogan Place Hotel, Sheraton Hotel and the underground car park are also built.
1990s Recovery from the early ‘90’s
recession saw an explosion of luxury
designer brands and flagship stores.
1907Cadogan Hall Completed in
Byzantine style.
1955St. Columba’s Church on Pont Street replaced the earlier church bombed in WW II.
1936Peter Jones opens in
Sloane Square.
1977The Danish
Embassy designed by
Arne Jacobson is built.
