Controversies in Immunisation

As we are well aware infections due to diverse organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi etc.,account for

innumerable deaths in children and adults. After the introduction of penicillin in the 1940s, several antibiotics have

been used to combat bacterial infections that resulted in a huge burden ofresistant bacteria. Anti-viral agents are

available only for very few viral infections such as varicella.Therefore, the most cost e�ective way of controlling infec-

tions is through immunisation, which has been one of the greatest health success stories in the past.Since Edward

Jenner introduced vaccination against small pox in the late 1790s, over 30 di�erention that there was no link between
