NAVAL AVIATION MUSEUM The follo\tli ng is an extract from a letter sent to

our Pre,1dent from the ~val Aviatton Museum. • The long term future and surv ival of the Museum

will depend to a large extent on the support by volunteers to es,ist the small permane nt 31a1'f ; n operating, promoting and administer ing Museum. We believe a total of about 60 •,olunteers would form e large enough group to eneble a reasonable roster for weekday and 'weekend \,,'Ork at the museum. Th1s 'w'auld meen that each person would hive about tw rostered days a month ISSUminQ volunteers ",iOUld worlc betveen normal Museum opening ti mes. Trai ni nq '-tlould be provided for the verious areas of vol untery war 1c.

If there are any local Nowr, members 'who \,,'OUld be willing ta accept a position on the ro,ter we can

' add ta the Museum Admirris1a1or's volunteers 1ist. Th1s '-tlill bl • tremendous help, and as ti me progresses keep addinq to ;t so we have a large ·te1m· over whtch to spre.d the dutie, , so that b'I the time the nev M~eum is reedy ve can N; ng into an efficient and professio,..I operation··

In another letter received b" our Pre~" nt. sp;1c, Camp,., thenad all memben ~ho 1,111rt1ci pated in the mavi ng of 111 the artifacts and d1spl11p from the buildings so thet they could be moved to their nev locations . Spi Ice aho ; nfo r rTled Bob that the nw Museum butldtnq con, tuction was about to start in 11rne:st a the bu1ldi ng contra:tor va ~ on ti1e.

. SPIN US A 'DIT' 1990 .... ... R.1.P. Armband, on and flag at half mast.

There had been a death in the -family ' . Not many people had realised that there wes any ill health. Unfortunete l y, the sickness proved to be termina l. The White Ensign Club ceesed to be at the tender age oft hirty~ix .

Jt seems ironic in a 1,1ay, t hat the 'club', whose concept was so hard to es'tabl i sh and the bitter fought 'pregn-ancy' it endured , ,hould 'pess .....,ey ,o quietly ' i n ib sleep .

WhtJ should anyone gtve • damn about the closing of a cl ub? Good question . But 'why not give a demn? It's part of No\.t'ra's history, it's also• big pen of t he fleet Air Arms' history. And , like it or not, the tvo have been conjoined ror many yeers nO'W.

HN many years? let me tell you a bit of a IJlrn. I promise not to

mare of historical record . .lis Majesty's ship NABBINGTON. The RoY81 Ntval

When hostili ties \¥'ere concluded and the Japanese decided to take over Australia the easy \ifllJ, the 'poms· returned to the latld of the thick gray cloud. HMS Nab bi nqton was decommissioned and ceased to be an expense on the British taxp1yer . The airfield 1,1as then returned to the ~1111 Australian Air Board, 1hu, becoming an expense on the Au,tnlitn taxpayer . Aran ·t inter nttionel politics marvellous? In May 1949 , HMAS Sydn111 arrived in Jervis Bay from England. On b01rd she 'tf8I carrying the aircraft and men of 1he t\t'entiethCarrier Air Group. This ....,., the nucleus of thl Australian fleet Air Arm .

It eventually reached the poi nt ,..,,here t he 11mt1ations of the to\.t'~ entertainment fac111t1es were being exceeded. This \oi'eS part i cular l y apparent on PIY nighb and pey ..,eekend:s.

To meet this need it 't/83 suggested t h~ a proper t y should be purchased and a 'cJub' formed. The cl ub 'w'Ould be for an members of the ar med forces , but primarily for the members of the RAN.

Discussions \.t'ere carr ied out. Money, or the suggested laclc of it , speaks volumes. The vote 'w'IS ncrw unanimous for the cl ub to proceed.

SPIN US A 'DIT cont_ Some people loolc:ed at i t t...,ice and then changed it

for tw'o shilli ng pieces, a1'1oleys 'with the undying optim ism of the big jec~pot around the corner.

Sandy w'as such an op1i mist. I should -.irite OPTIMIST.

He arrived at t he club on the Friday after noon after payday. One thing w'SS for sure, he had a ftN quid in hi3 poclcet and he wesn't going to 'blcrw-it' on the poker machines. He had a beer. No. He definately 'wasn·t going to play ·em. He had another beer .

It \tflS nearly closing ttme . Sandy contemplated his much diminished cash supply . After he'd paid for his eccomod8tion and breakfast 1 n the mornt ng he 'would heve the princely sum of t...,o quid to l~t him for the nex1 fortnight.

He tr ied to argue the injusticeofthesi1uat ion, by thinking to himself, that it W'IS only a fN minute, ago, he'd been the proud o~ner of some thirty pounds. The fact is, it vesn't a fev minutes. It 'wS3 neerl y five hours and some t"wel\/e b•rs later .

The grog numbed his bni n and he slept like I dog. In the cold light of the de"" he ~olce ..,ith t

S.ndy ·zombied' his w'l'I up to\in and squeezed into a cubicle at the ~e~ York Cafe.

He ordered ste1k, eg,p and • bucket of black coffee.

As the sugar pushed into his blood3treem end dislodged the alcohol, he started ta f•I be1ter. In fact, surprisingly, he felt I lot better .

It wea at this moment of 'wll- being', that he had his brai rNeve.

Leaving his tmlf cup of coffee, ht paid his bill and heeded for t he nNS8Q8nts.

H1s purch!l~ et the ne~segents further depleted his funds, but he tho113ht it ~or1tr.h11e. Indeed, his "'hole pattern of survival, for the next M iweelcs, depended on 1t. He baU4ht stieets of Q1ff piper. t~o books of riffle ticlce1s 1nd I rall of s1iclc~ tape. He heeded ba:t to his catrin 11 the club .

When they ...,ent to the bar for their r ound of drinb, they were attrac~d to the ,ign on top of the 'prize' . 11 read:- 'Sailors Benevolent Fund raffle. Only prize~ a Silver trey and m~t cover . Thi, prize ..,n, be dn'w n at nine o'cl oclc tonight by the duty barman·.
