Radius lies Laterally

The forearm is divided into 2 compartments by the Interosseous membrane and the Deep Fascia

Interosseous membrane



Anterior Compartment contains the • Superficial Flexors• Deep Flexors



Anterior Compartment contains the • Superficial Flexors• Deep Flexors

Posterior Compartment contains the • Extensors• Mobile Wad of Three

1.Flexor Digitorum Profundus

2.Flexor Poliicis Longus

3.Pronator Quadratus

2.Flexor Poliicis Longus


In contrast to the superficial flexors,

all of these muscles arise distal to the elbow joint and

hence do not cause movement at the elbow joint


Deep Flexors


Arises from the proximal ¾ of the Ulna and the Interosseous Membrane

It inserts via slender tendons onto the distal phalanges of the fingers

It flexes the Distal Interphalangeal Joints (DIPJ)

2. Flexor Pollicis Longus

Arises from the Radius and the Interosseous Membrane

It inserts onto the distal phalanx of the thumb

It flexes the thumb Interphalangeal Joint (IPJ)


Deep Flexors

3. Pronator Quadratus

Arises from the Distal ¼ of Ulna

It inserts onto Distal ¼ of Radius

It pronates the forearm

Supplied by the Anterior Interosseous Nerve(a branch of the Median Nerve)

EXCEPTLateral half of FDP which is supplied by Ulnar Nerve

Anterior Forearm

Flexor Digitorum Profundus

Origin Proximal 3/4 of medial and anterior surfaces of ulna and interosseous membrane

Insertion Base of the distal phalanges of digits 2 - 5

Action Flexes distal phalanges at distal interphalangeal joints of medial four digits; assists with flexion of hand

Nerve Supply Medial part: ulnar nerve; Lateral part: anterior interosseous branch of median nerve (C8 and T1)

Blood Supply Ulnar and anterior interosseous arteries

Anterior Forearm

Flexor Pollicis LongusOrigin Anterior surface of radius

Insertion Base of distal phalanx of thumb

Action Flexes interphalangeal joint of 1st digit (thumb)
