Editorial Holding both the Championship and Open shows on the same

day was a first this year but hopefully everyone agreed it was a

long but thoroughly enjoyable day that worked really well, with

thanks to all those involved who kept everything happening.

We have just had our first of two Sammy Walks for the year.

Surprisingly the weather was really good and everyone seemed

to really enjoy it, dogs included, and lots of smiles greeted the

approaching group of white dogs (and one Dobermann!). Photos

will be in the next Sleigh Courier. Note we have another planned

for October, then we have the usual Snow Dogs Match in No-

vember and also, a new thing for us, the Pet Expo on the first

weekend of November in conjunction with the Spitz Breeds Club

(and possibly other clubs to be confirmed), held at Trentham

Racecourse.

As usual, if anyone has any relevant stories or articles for the

magazine please feel free to send them in. Also if you have any

photos of your Sammies that could be used to fill the magazine

or go with an article/story please feel free to send them to me

too! And as always, any ideas or offers to organise events and

fundraising are always wel-

come and much appreciated!

Over the years of starting up Samcare we seem to be becoming more known.

I get a lot more phone calls and emails asking for help to re-home their Samoyed or about Samoyeds that end up at the pound or SPCA.

Some of them are in the South Island or the Auckland/Waikato area, which I then contact the other Clubs/members in that area to see what we can work out between us.

Thank you to all the people that have tried to help.

I was a bit surprised and disappointed that in late May when I got a email and photo about a female Samoyed in the Hutt Pound, it was on death row because they could not find the owner.

The pound was shut and the only thing I had was the photo. So I emailed it to several breeders/owners asking for Help.

Some replies were very negative! Which is sad, when it does appear that this dog is lost.

Its microchip number was registered to a Wellington address and it was found in Wainuiomata.

Thank you to Lynne Barr for picking her up and doing the property check. It sounds like she now has a great home.

I have been lucky that I have had homes waiting for an older Samoyed, so we have not had to use Club funds to rescue Samoyeds, but I am always looking for homes.

It would also be helpful to have a list of foster homes in different areas or people that can visit their local pound.

Cutting-Edge Kiwi Canine Website is Global Phenomenon

More than 1.2 million people from 207 coun-

tries have logged onto a new website developed to

help rescue the thousands of dogs abandoned in New

Zealand every year.

The state-of-the-art Kiwi website, Doggel-

gänger, uses cutting-edge human to canine pairing

software to connect homeless dogs to their human

doubles.

Developed by facial recognition experts NEC,

the software is being used by the Pedigree Adoption

Drive Charitable Trust in this year’s annual campaign,

which aims to give homeless dogs in New Zealand a

second chance at life.

The website has been visited more than 1.5

million times by over 1.2 million people in countries

including the United States, Taiwan, Brazil, Iraq and

Angola.

Pedigree marketing manager Oliver Downs

says the company is thrilled with the traffic to the

website to date.

“These statistics are unprecedented. The

website was only launched a few weeks ago and has

been averaging around 80,000 hits a day so we can

only hope that these numbers continue to

grow. However at the end of the day, our main goal is

that the Doggelgänger site connects homeless dogs

throughout the country with loving new homes,”

Downs says.

The development of Doggelgänger by NEC

follows a 2004 study by the University of California

San Diego that found when people look for a canine

companion, they look for one that resembles them-

selves. The study concluded that dogs are more likely

to be chosen by a person who shares similar features.

NEC’s Head of Research and Development

Glen Cameron says the core technology “NeoFace”

has been ranked* as the world’s most accurate at

comparing human to human faces.

The software is also used internationally in

applications such as anti-terrorism and automated

border control.

Cameron says the technology works by look-

ing for visual areas of similarity between browsers and

an abandoned canine looking for a home.

The Pedigree Adoption Drive Charitable Trust

is part of a global programme established by Pedigree

to help raise awareness and funds for desperate dogs

in local communities, helping to house, feed and care

for the unwanted canines. It is estimated that more

than 10,000 dogs are abandoned by their owners each

year in New Zealand.

My thanks to the Samoyed Club for giving me the chance to judge your 2011 Champ Show. Such a pretty and glamorous breed, I enjoyed judging the Samoyeds albeit with an "All Rounder’s" eye.

Quality was excellent from puppies right through to veterans, grooming and presentation also of the highest standard.
