sleep apnea and sudden cardiac death

Sleep Apnea and Sudden Cardiac Death. In general, poor sleep due to any reason has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. But sleep apnea has been identified as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown that the risk of sudden cardiac death increased significantly in patients with an average of five years of obstructive sleep apnea. The most common symptom associated with sleep apnea is snoring. Being overweight, male gender, older age and smoking are common risk factors in both sleep apnea and cardiac death. Studies done at University of Birmingham Center for Cardiovascular Sciences found that six months of sleep apnea treatment can negate the effects of sleep apnea on the heart and decrease the risk of heart failure. It is highly recommended to get immediate evaluation and treatment in the presence of sleep apnea symptoms such as snoring, choking or apnea during night, excessive daytime sleepiness
