S: What does fashion mean to you?CB: To round it up, fashion is a lifestyle. S: When did you realise you wanted to become a fashion designer? CB: It was from I was nine years old and it came in stages. From nine I loved the whole idea of sewing machines and sewing on a machine. By the time I was like sixteen I loved tailoring and then from there it developed into the whole love for fashion. S: What’s the first article of clothing you designed?CB: Is a shirt enuh (laughs). I still have that shirt up to this day.

S: How long does it take you to make such a piece?CB: To do a shirt is less than…about…less than 2 hours to do a shirt.

S: How would you describe the style that your line exemplifies?CB: It’s a mix of everything. It’s urban sheek and at the same time I go for the

business side. Whether you wanna have that look for an interview, you wanna have that look for a seminar…

creating a look for you is important. S: What are/have been some of your goals?

image is everything. so Believes JamaiCa’s expert Fashion Designer Carlton BroWn. he aDmires anD hopes to one Day aChieve as muCh as Fashion giants suCh as anDreW ramroop, ozWalD Boateng, tom ForD anD houses suCh as marC JaCoBs anD praDa have.he’s revereD anD sought aFter By many soCialites anD Fashion-ConsCious persons anD guess What? he’s CertiFieD sleeK!meet Carlton BroWn.

CB: I think I’ve achieved some but I’m really looking forward for the bigger goal though. I’ll tell you where it started from…the first show I did at my church which is when I went from loving the sewing machine to moving into wanting to do fashion. Other goals are like some of the local shows that I was a part of and Toronto Fashion Week and Miami Fashion Week. S: Do you have advice for aspiring designers?CB: The advice I have for them is to love it. I realise that a lot of guys really come into it because of the glamour and the

high life. But what happens when

there’s that down time? What do you do? So, let’s say when fashion week comes around and you’re all up in fashion week and etc, when fashion week is

over and there’s

that damp period what

then?

S: What’s one of your best perks thus far as a designer?CB: That would be being a judge on Mission Catwalk. That was a plus because you get to meet new people and young designers who I never knew look to me for guidance. S: One thing you wish the average person knew about being a designer is…?CB: It’s never lights, camera, photograph. (It’s not as easy as it seems)

S: What makes a quality article of clothing?CB: A quality article of clothing for me…fabric is one, the design aspect, the tailoring aspect, and then the finish is what really spells that. You’re not gonna buy a shirt that feels like a canvas so another

aspect to it is the quality of fabric.

S: What trends are big right now? CB: Colours is what is really happening for fashion now. Colour blocking is what is big now and it’s really how you wear them. Colours has been wearing for years now but it’s how you put it together that matters. S: What’s your favourite colour?CB: I don’t really have a favourite colour. (Laughs)

Cricket lovers held a grand celebration

at the Appleton Mound during the Digicel One-Day International between the West Indies and New Zealand. Those present seemed determined to enjoy themselves, and they surely did. The day’s entertainment was provided by Renaissance Disco and Kiki, as well as the onfield action. Appleton bars were up and running and persons visited them for their mix of choice to help fuel their energy levels. The stand exploded with excitement throughout the day as the West Indies went on to defeat New Zealand by nine wickets.

Smirnoff Dream Week was launched

in fine style on July 3 at the Tinson Pen Aero-drome as Dream En-tertainment revealed its plans for the popu-lar party weekend to those in attendance. This year, they promise a bigger and better Dream Weekend.Extending the festivities to over a one-week pe-riod, the weekend will now host 11 parties.A brief flight around Kingston and a perfor-mance from upcom-ing star Popcaan were a few of the launch’s highlights that patrons were treated to.Good music paired with Smirnoff vodka mixes topped off the night’s proceedings.

patrons journeyed to Morgan’s Har-

bour Hotel, Port Royal, for the recent staging of Absinthe - ‘Monte Carlo’ on July 8 and they were given noth-ing short of their monies worth of fun and enter-tainment. The packed venue was bubbling with energy and pa-trons were not shy to show it as they danced and sang to the hits spun by the disc jock-eys. They frequented the bars and food court throughout the night and when it was time to call it a night they easily made their way to the exit with talk of satisfaction abundant on the lips of many. The night was surely worth the journey out east. 7

In all honesty, the lineup lacks the electricity that

Vybz Kartel brings. Grant-ed he’s not a good

performer, but his ex-tensive catalogue

of hit songs and public

mischief would

make him one of the most anticipated acts. Remem-ber two years ago and the orange jailer suit? Uh-huh!

Shizzle ma nizzle! Ele hair a sizzle! It’s not? Well it looked as if it was on fire from here to me. Ele is a usually good per-former and will bring a wicked performance to the stage.

Poo-Pooko-Poo-Pooko-Poo-Pooko-Poo!

Is No-Maddz ready for a hardcore dancehall/

reggae audience? Let’s put it at 50/50 for now.

They’re an ex-

tremely talented group but such an audience

doesn’t always recognise real talent. Just ask Tommy Lee. Let’s hope they bring the trod to the

stage and do well.

Yaaooww! Come offa di stage naaooww!

Popcaan isn’t the best performer and

doesn’t seem to remember the lines to his songs hence the squeaky, high pitched, ‘Dash weh dat! Next track!

Run it!’ that follows the first two or three lines of a

song.

Bounty is a solid perform-er with countless hits. But bottles whizzing through the air are pretty solid too and also have countless hits. If he can do without his ‘giant’ status, the com-men-tary about another artiste, and deliver the ‘warlord per-formance’ we know he can.

Gather around students, let’s spell it out.

L.U.K.E.W.A.R.M. A.T. I.T.S. B.E.S.T.

There are times when Tifa can do it and other

times when she just simply cannot.

Hear ye, hear ye, the king will be in control as he ruleth over his Montego Bay na-tion.Although no queen, prin-cess or angel will be by his side, Beenie Man will undoubtedly deliver a smashing performance.

Hit songs will carry I-Octane through his performance. He is a fair performer and is tipped to deliver the good stuff when he hits centerstage.

We consulted with the ‘experts’ and they gave us some useful insight as to how the performers at Reggae Sumfest will do. They asked us to share the news with all, so here goes.

What surprises lie in store for the eyes of the world at this year’s Olympics? The world is watching and wondering about many things. The competitiveness of the games which begin on July 27 is in your face and is going nowhere until the score is settled at Olympic Park, London, England.Of course, the most con-cern lies between vari-ations of two stages-the 100 metres showdowns, the 200 metres clashes, and lastly, Jamaica VS the United States of America. Now, with the most re-cent developments, or if you rather say surprises, that took place at both the 2012 Jamaican and American national athletics trials (that serve to qualify athletes for the upcoming London 2012

Olympics), everyone is waiting with baited breath. The beastly Yohan Blake drew a show-stopper on world champion Usain Bolt TWICE, and Shelly- Ann Fraser-Pryce throttled past Veronica Campbell-Brown TWICE. Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin are coming fast with venge-ance and Allyson Felix, Marion Jones and Car-melita Jeter are extreme-ly big threats. The medal podium is a bit crowded as there’s no clear indication of who’s making way for whom to take the top spots. You’re looking on and SLEEKs also looking on. That just about sums up all we can actually do, so let’s wait and see who will be the first across the line in London.

The point of going to the party weekends is almost defeated if you don’t have a place to rest after partying. Make sure your accommo-dation is comfortable and easily accessible for a better experience.

ACCOMMOdAtiOn

Will you unleash it all? Will you live the dream? Or will you head to Ochi? It’s either A.T.I., Dream Week or SPF.These three party series are the only reasons why you’ll be away for the weekend so a season armband is TOP priority.

SEASOn ArMBAnd

If you’re not planning to go to only one party series or all the parties in the series, it’s always better to have your ticket in hand. This way you bypass the at-the-gate hassle that may present itself.

It’s all about the Benjamins! (And the Shearers). Need we say more?

MOnEy

You’re going to the beach, not to the club or the lounge.Hang up your heels and your casuals and slip into a pair of comfy sandals for the beach.A big, floppy straw hat is the secret weap-on that both can top off your beach outfit and shade your face from the sun’s rays.Additionally, a good, trendy pair of sun-glasses can do well on the eyes. Find a style that suits your face shape and hit the sands.A photograph lasts a lifetime and keeps a candid moment exactly how you want it. Pack a camera. P.S. ± ACCESSOriES

You never know what can happen over the course of the weekend. In light of any accidents or even hangovers, a medical kit can help patch you up.

MEdiCAL Kit

Complement your stylish look with proper hygiene. Carry with you the necessary toiletries

tOiLEtriES Patrons don’t exactly live on the beach…so how do they get there? Make sure yuh ride sort out! Whether you’re heading to Negril or to Ochi by your own transportation or car pooling with friends, this is important.

11It might not sound important but it is. The right attitude can determine your actions in any situation so al-ways bear that in mind.
