Head Coach DG Nelson
Coach DG Nelson enters his twelfth year at the helm of the highly successful SLCC Baseball program . In his tenure, DG has led the Bruins to a Scenic West Athlet-ic Conference (SWAC) Championship, two Region 18 Championships and two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Top 20 finishes.
Nelson has coached the Bruins to the best record in
school history and best ever winning percentage . With Nelson as head coach, 112 of his players have moved on to compete and study at four-year institutions, with 19 Bruins joining the professional baseball ranks--one even moving on to a Major League Baseball World Se-ries team .
Last season, the Bruins posted an overall record of
36-18, finishing with a 22-10 mark in the SWAC. SLCC won hosting rights for the Region 18 Baseball Champi-onships by claiming the SWAC regular season title, and the Bruins finished second at the District I Champion-ships having claimed hosting rights for that tournament as well .
Coach Nelson has compiled a 327-186 overall record
at SLCC, 217-132 in SWAC competition . DG has devel-oped Bruin Baseball into one of the premier junior col-lege baseball programs in the entire nation .
Prior to joining SLCC as an assistant coach in 2000,
Nelson was an assistant at Dixie State College on its SWAC Championship and NJCAA National Runner-Up team . He also served as a hitting coach for the St . George Pioneerzz in 2002, and worked as a graduate assistant at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1998 and 1999 . Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and English at BYU . He and his wife Jodi are proud parents of four daughters .
7
Assistant Coach Derek Waddoups
Coach Waddoups enters his eighth season as assistant base-ball coach for SLCC Bruin Baseball . His duties include recruiting coordinator and hitting coach, along with coaching the catching and supervising the strength and conditioning and position player speed development programs .
Winning the 2014 Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship, the Bruins finished with an overall record of 36-18 and an excellent mark of 19-7 in the SWAC . Along with the 2014 Championship, the Bruins were SWAC Champions in 2012 and Region 18 Champions in 2011 and 2012 .
Coach Waddoups also helped SLCC Baseball Head Coach DG Nelson move 11 players from last year’s team on to compete
and study at four-year institutions . Since Derek’s arrival, the Bruins have moved 71 players on to four-year schools or to join the professional baseball ranks . Overall, the program has had 28 players drafted in the Major League Baseball amateur draft or sign with professional baseball teams since 1997 .
Five Bruins from last year’s club were named First Team All-Region 18 players, three made Second Team All-Region 18 and six were selected as All-Region 18 Honorable Mention student-athletes . The SLCC baseball student-athletes were also successful in the classroom with 16 players being honored on the All-SWAC Academic Team .
A graduate of Roy High School, Waddoups lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was named Athlete-of-the-Year as a senior . He served a mission for the LDS church in Mexico Torreon .
Waddoups received his master’s degree in Leadership from Bellevue University in 2006 . Derek is happily married to Carly Waddoups, and the couple has three young children, daughter Paisley and sons Paxon and Porter .
Tuckett Slade enters his third season with the Bruins. Tuckett coaches the outfielders and helps with the overall position player development in base running, hitting, and fielding. He serves as an academic mentor to the baseball program helping individual student-athletes succeed in the classroom .
Under Coach Slade last season, the Bruins had one first team All-Region 18 outfield se-lection, a second team, and an honorable mention . They were the only team in the region with all three outfielders to make the All-Region 18 team in 2014, an outstanding team ac-complishment .
Prior to coaching at Salt Lake, Coach Slade was the head coach at his alma mater West High School for two seasons, 2011 and 2012 . This past summer Tuckett was the Head Coach
for the Utah Bucks, members of the Marshall Gated Baseball Foundation Elite summer program . He also served as an assistant coach with the Utah Bucks in 2012-2013, and as an assistant coach with the College M’s in 2010-2011 . Tuckett previously spent two years as the Head Baseball Instructor at the Frozen Ropes Baseball Academy in Utah .
Tuckett played his collegiate baseball at Bellevue University and Colorado Northwestern Community College . He led the Bellevue Bruins with a batting average of .447 his senior year and earned the honor of Academic All-American . He was also selected as the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned 2nd Team All Nebraska and 2nd Team MCAC honors . While at Bellevue he was a member of two MCAC Championship teams and participated in the 2007 and 2008 NAIA World Series . Slade graduated from West High School in 2004 where he was selected as an All-Region first baseman three times, and selected twice as an All-State team member.
Coach Slade earned his bachelor’s degree from Bellevue University in 2009 in Physical Education & Sports Studies with a minor in Coaching Theory . He and his wife, Jaime, live in Salt Lake City, Utah and have one daughter, Miya .
