Before 1860 there were about four million slaves in America! They traveled on the most famous “road” of the day-The Underground Railroad. We have recently learned about a interesting subject, and today we would like to teach you about it. You will learn about : dangers, Harriet Tubman, life as a slave, and much more!

Leaders

A man dressed in fine clothes leads slaves through the Underground Railroad. If they were caught by a white man , he would say “I am bringing my slaves to a new plantation.”

Directions

The slaves followed the stars and hoped that they will accomplish their journey of being free, without being caught.

A Famous Person

Have you ever heard of Harriet Tubman? She was a conductor that lead slaves to their freedom. Harriet Tubman (far left) with slaves she freed

Life as a Slave

To be a slave meant that you had nothing you could call your own-not even your name or yourself. One slave was beat because he called his owner Mister instead of Master. Another was whipped because he had looked at a slave the master had beaten to death, and cried.

What are the dangers you could face? Dangers you could face were wild animals, and the biggest danger was to be…caught!
