The Samurai quote on the left has

accompanied me for most of my life. I

made the document on my first

computer and transferred it several times. I

never thought that I would meet a Sensei at

the Shirley Community Centre. When most

people think about martial arts, they think it is

about fighting or self defense. Certainly

martial arts is about training one to defend him

or herself but the physical training involved in

martial arts is just one half of the formula.

There are three aspects of being, which the

martial arts aim to develop: Body, Mind and

Spirit. These three aspects must be

developed in balance for a person to become

properly balanced as a martial artist and

therefore as a person. There is so much more

that can be gained inside and outside of the dojo. Personal growth and

development, learning to stay calm and centred and improving your quality of life

are just a few of the benefits bestowed upon the serious student. So much

attention in the media is focused on beating someone else or seeing stories

about children getting black belts after a couple of years in training. This, in myopinion, is sensationalistic nonsense that has little to do with the real meaning and

value behind the practice of martial arts. My favourite quote is: There is no honour

in defeating a much-weaker opponent; your real opponent is your own lack of self-

control. Please read the article on page 22 and be inspired.

    Disinformation

Have you ever come across and read

    http://www.disinfo.com/ or perhaps

watched films like Erin Brockovich? WhenI think of the incinerator that Croydon and

other Councils want to impose on us, I

wonder why so many officials present a

totally rosy picture of incineration and are

not prepared to consider any negative

effects on peoples health. The officials are human beings and have families: do

they really believe that the incinerator will improve the air we breathe and that

nano particles do not exist? What is the point of earning hundreds of thousandsof pounds when your body becomes diseased and nano particles embed

    themselves in your lungs?

    From www.americanhealthstudies.org/powerpoint/Incineration_altern.ppt

    Incineration and nano particles

Both morbidity and mortality in large cities can be related to particulate matter

(PM) (from traffic, power stations and industry)

As the particles get smaller the relationship gets stronger

A modern incinerator converts hundreds or thousands of tons of trash eachday into trillions of nanoparticles

These nanoparticles are the most dangerous of any combustion source

    Nanoparticles from incinerators contain:

    Neurotoxic metals,

    Stabilized free radicals

    Thousands of newly synthesized compounds

    (including PCBs, dioxins and furans).

Any toxic element used in commerce has thepotential to end up in nanoparticles produced by

    incinerators.

Nano particles are not efficiently captured by air

pollution control devices, travel long distances,

    penetrate deep into the lungs.

When I go back to my home town, family and friends cannot believe that our

refuse is collected every 2 weeks. They dispose daily of rubbish or recycling in

designated containers, which are emptied by the local council every day. The

containers serve one or more roads.

The nearest incinerator (Pietrasanta) was shut down because deemed

environmentally dangerous. The local mayors called it a monster to be shut down. You can watch www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOJk2fMrzfA and also read

Stuart Collins ColumnOne of the hottest issues (pardon the pun) is

Croydon Councils support for a waste burning

incinerator in Beddington, on the borders of

Croydon.Through the South London Waste Partnership,

the current administration agreed that other

Boroughs can bring thousands of tons of waste

    through our already congested roads.

Surely such a waste disposal site is not

appropriate in a densely populated area.

Throughout the process there has been no opportunity for a meaningful

public debate and the current administration have refused to speak to

residents about the reasons for their support for this project. When

pressed, they tell us it is not an old fashioned incinerator, yet the proposal

is for an 85 metre high chimney, surely not there for decoration! Even with

the newest of technologies, they cannot reasonable claim there will be no

emissions travelling through the air of highly populated areas.

We all know we need to reduce landfill. However, it is the current

administrations duty not to hide from the debate of how to achieve thisgoal: after all, we live in a democracy.

I only hope the recent election results in the Croydon Wards around the

planned site will make them think again.

Peter Howards Elder Abuse CampaignA while back I wrote in Shirley Life that, because I

could not get backing elsewhere, I persuaded myretired but still active Colleagues in Unison to back

a Campaign to make certain types of crimes against

    the elderly a Specific Offence.

I was saddened to see that, although we placed

the website details that people could use to sign the

petition to get the Government to consider making

Elder Abuse a Specific criminal Offence like Race orHomophobia, the petition was signed by about 300

hits. A long way from the 100K required.

Please note that the petition, which can be downloaded by clicking

    http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/27208, is still running.

The only paper to publish an article on this campaign was the Croydon

    Advertiser in February this year.

The elderly are covered by the regular laws of the land. However, in certain

circumstances, Parliament said that, if a crime was carried out because of thepersons race or gender, then extra laws applied with stiffer penalties.

How do I know this? It is because I was a police Inspector and I have a

University qualification in Criminology. A local MP said I could be seen as a bit

of a busy body or Barrack Room Lawyer. Putting children up chimneys etc. was

stopped by such busybodies! Also, with my background, I know a little more

    about criminal jurisprudence than many!

When should this new law kick in?1 When it can clearly be shown that the person against whom the crime was

    committed is frail by reason of mental or physical frailty;

2 When the person committing the crime is the carer of frail people and fails in

    this duty by neglect.

I make no apologies for this tirade, and I am sorry if you are fed up with me!! Ive

even had the pleasure of internet ghouls writing unpleasant things about me

over this, but Ive been insulted by experts! Everyone loves dribbling babies and

coos over them but, when you are old and dribbling, people ignore or avoid

you. Although this Petition is being run through Unison, it is NOT political and,

as a Conservative Ive met with many Labour Councillors and a few MPs, plus

a Conservative MP. Ive written to the new Bishop of Croydon who replied he

would not support the matter because there are enough laws, but did not ask

me to explain my thinking! The 2 Archbishops said almost the same, plus other

politicians, the Chief Rabbi. The Archbishop of Westminister said he was praying

for us! Major newspapers ignore us, as do the many celebrities we havecontacted. I wonder if these same people would publicly debate with me WHY

Older People should not get special Protection in Law? We are not, like some,

asking for all offences against Elderly People to be an offence, only some. Also

that this way police etc. could not ignore these crimes until a major crime

eventually occurs. Myself and my 4 Colleagues get nothing out of this, other

that, if our goal is eventually achieved, we will have achieved something in our

remaining years. And yes, Mr MPs, we may still be seen as busy bodies orbarrack room lawyers, but it will have been worth it. WHO of those opposing us

would be willing to stand up and explain why? Not many I think.

GLA Sketch by Andrew PellingTime to move away from London's main

meeting of the whole Assembly and to see how

one of the Assembly's eighteen committees isoperating.

An important committee it is too; the Police and

    Crime Committee.

This Committee inherits that part of the role of

    the now abolished Metropolitan Police

Authority that sees it scrutinising police issues.

Police Commissioner Hogan-Howe though isaccountable now to the Mayor and his

    appointed Deputy Mayor Stephen Greenhalgh.

Greenhalgh comes to City Hall having

previously led a Conservative Council that actually cuts Council Tax and with a

    high personal reputation for competency.

Sadly that reputation was badly damaged at the meeting.

It was not clear what posessed Greenhalgh. Perhaps someone had persuaded

him that he could pull off the same rakish and dismissive attitude towards the

Assembly that his blond boss posesses.

Sadly this approach fell dramatically flat.

Just 18 minutes before the meeting the Assembly received an e-mail advising

that the Commissioner would not attend and Greenlagh said that Assembly

Members could join the public in posing their questions to the Commissioner at

    a webchat later that afternoon.

He had advised the Commissioner not to attend, Greenhalgh stated bullishly.

Hold me to account was his challenge.

    The Commissioner's chair stood empty.

    Greenhalgh's answers were pathetic. He

hid behind his notes, stuck out his

tongue and lost control of his seat thatkept tipping back. Sweating profusely he

looked like a larger version of Nick Griffin.

    Could he provide answer?

Well here are some of them:

Well, err, err, I can't answer

I do not have that information

I read this briefing last nightI haven't read the review

I have got a bit of a briefing note

I don't have the briefing note

I have not been briefed on that

Not impressive at all when you remember that our taxes pay for his six-figure

    salary.

The stunt also made the Commissioner look arrogantly dismissive of the

Assembly that people had just voted for.

Lib-Dem Caroline Pidgeon described Greenhalgh as cocky at the

start. By the end it was just car crash tv.

Tory commentators have since called for the Assembly to be

abolished which would denude our local member Steve O'Connell

of a 53,439 annual salary from City Hall. Both Greenhalgh andConservatives feel that the Commissioner can be made

accountable to the Deputy Mayor at public meetings and that in any case police

accountability is much less important than fighting crime itself.

O'Connell justified the Assembly's direct questioning of the Commissioner by

reference to the legislation creating an obligation on Assembly Members to raise

    concerns for Londoners.

Victoria Borwick, another Conservative member was more directtelling Greenlagh that his approach was an Absolute outrage; not

a good start to your tenure of office.

Chair of the Police and Crime Committee

Joanne McCartney AM said: We are

committed to the transparent and accountable operation of

policing in London; we hope the Deputy Mayor for Policing

and Crime will come to share that objective. He failed today.www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVLy5ZTYioY

Giovannas ColumnMy Irish friend Maria sent me

two recipes that I really enjoy

    because they taste very good

and, yet, it does not take toolong to prepare the dishes. The coddle is what you

need to warm you up in winter. You can eat the

barnbrack at any time. We have a similar cake in Italy:

in Tuscany, to be precise. It is called focaccia

toscana and my Tuscan friend tells me that it may also contain a ring when

    made around Christmas.

Dublin CoddleThis is a very popular dish, especially in Dublin, and has been so for many years.

It is nourishing, tasty, economical and warming - what more could you ask?

Although it is best made with a good stock - water in which a ham has been

boiled, or even a ham bone - a light stock cube will substitute.

    Ingredients:

    1lb/ 500g best sausages

    8oz/ 250g streaky bacon1/2pt/ 300ml/ 1 cup stock or water

    6 medium potatoes

    2 medium onions

    salt and pepper

    (serves four)

    Method:

Cut the bacon into 1in/ 3cm squares. Bring the stock to the boil in a mediumsaucepan which has a well-fitting lid, add the sausages and the bacon and

simmer for about 5 minutes. Remove the sausages and bacon and save the

liquid. Cut each sausage into four or five pieces. Peel the potatoes and cut into

thick slices. Skin the onions and slice them. Assemble a layer of potatoes in the

saucepan, followed by a layer of onions and then half the sausages and bacon.

Repeat the process once more and then finish off with a layer of potatoes. Pour

the reserved stock over and season lightly to taste.Cover and simmer gently for about an hour. Adjust the seasoning and serve

    piping hot.

    Barnbrack or Raisin Loaf

Barnbrack is the centre of an Irish Halloween custom. The Halloween Brack

traditionally contained various objects baked into the bread and was used as a

sort of fortune-telling game. In the barnbrack were: a pea, a stick, a piece of cloth,

a small coin (originally a silver sixpence) and a ring. Each item, when received in

the slice, was supposed to carry a meaning to the person concerned: the pea,the person would not marry that year; the stick, would have an unhappy marriage

    or continually be in disputes; the cloth or rag, would have bad luck or be poor;

the coin, would enjoy good fortune or be rich; and the ring, would be wed within

the year. Commercially produced barmbracks for the Halloween market may still

    include a toy ring.

    Ingredients:

    1/4 pt/ 125 ml/ 1/2 cup lukewarm milk1 tsp sugar

    1 tsp fresh yeast

    8 oz/ 250 g/ 2 cups plain flour

1 tsp mixed spice, pinch salt

    1 egg, 3 tbsp butter

    6 oz/ 200 g/ 2 cups mixed fruit

(currants, sultanas, raisins, candied peel)1 gold ring (in greaseproof paper), optional!

    2 oz/50 g/2 tbsp caster sugar

    Method:

Cream the yeast and the sugar and allow to froth up in the milk, which should

be at blood heat. Sieve the flour, caster sugar and spice and rub in the butter.

Make a well in the centre and add the yeast mixture and the egg, beaten. Beat

with a wooden spoon for about 10 minutes until a good dough forms. The fruit and the salt should be worked in by hand; the gold ring wrapped in

greaseproof paper should then be added, and the whole kneaded. Put in a

warm bowl, cover and allow to rise in a warm place for about an hour until

doubled in size. Knead lightly and place in a lightly-greased 7 in /15 cm diameter

cake tin and allow a further 30 minutes rising time.

Bake near the top of a pre-heated oven at gas mark 6, 400F, 200C for 45

minutes. On removing from the oven the brack can be glazed with a syrup madefrom 2 tsp sugar dissolved in 3 tsp boiling water.

Tenshin Ryu has a documented lineage dating back to the legendary

    Ogawa Kinnosuke 10th Dan swordmaster.

Tenshin Ryu Iaido is a style of swordsmanship like many others proved in

ancient battles during Japans fuedal past. The lessons learnt and the

principles observed have been passed down the ages. Iaido is now

practiced as a form of self development and to come to an understanding

that all combat is immoral. The term "Saya no uchi" implies victory without

drawing the sword. Iaido is the search for perfection in movement. One canpractise an entire lifetime and still find fault: this is how it should be. It is the

path one follows that leads to a greater understanding of swordsmanship

    and, ultimately, of life.

Iaijutsu is the other side of the coin, Iaijutsu requires of the practioner

development of the mind alongside demanding forms. The emphasis is on

Kai was originally established in Kyoto Japan 1895 under the authority of the

Ministry of Education and the endorsement of His Royal Highness, Meiji

Emperor to solidify, promote, and standardize martial disciplines and

    systems throughout Japan.

    History

Ogawa Kinnosuke, a legendary 10th Dan swordmaster, was one of only

three masters of martial arts to be granted the Shijohosho, an award given

for great achievement by the Emperor of Japan. Other masters to receivethis honour at this time were Seiji Mochida, a Master of Kendo and Kyuzo

Mifune, a Master of Judo. Morihei Ueshiba, the great teacher of Aikido was

also later to obtain this honour. In 1933 at the Butokukwai in Kyoto, Japan,

Ogawa began to teach the art of swordsmanship to a young Dan grade

    called Abbe Kenshiro.

Abbe Sensei had been instructed in the discipline of Kendo since the age

of three and, at the age of seventeen had already attained 4th Dan in Judo.

One year later he was to become Japans youngest ever 5 th Dan. Whilsttraining at the Butokukwai, he started researching an obsolete ancient

Japanese religious philosophy known as Kyushindo. This may be

    interpreted as -

KYU to desire or to have a deep yearning to search after something.

SHIN heart, mind, spirit, - the true and fundamental nature as opposed

    to the superficial appearance.

DO a way or path; a far reaching and inclusive direction. The elementary perspective of this translation may be considered to be the

way of longing for knowledge of the fundamental nature of all things.

This philosophy therefore can be considered as not just a theoretical

application with relevance limited to martial arts but to life in its entirety.

After experiencing Satori (enlightenment) at the age of 18, Abbe Sensei

developed a new style of Judo and two years later became Grand

Champion. He was awarded 6th Dan Judo and 3rd Dan Kendo at the age of

23 and was selected at this time to become a student of Morihei Ueshibawith whom he remained for the next ten years, perfecting his arts and the

    principles of Kyushindo.

At the age of 40 Abbe Sensei was a Master of Judo, Kendo, Iaido, and

Jukendo as well as several other traditional martial disciplines. In 1955 Abbe

Sensei was the Master who brought these arts to the United Kingdom. Here

he met and began to teach Kyu shin Budo to Otani Tomio, the first born son

of Masutaro Otani, 7th Dan Judo Master. Otani Tomio Sensei was no

newcomer to Martial Arts and had been training since childhood, with AbbeSensei's guidance he was to become a Master Budoka.

Mike Selvey met Otani Tomio Sensei in 1979

when he visited the dojo in Carshalton, Surrey

at which Mike was teaching Judo. Otani

Tomio Senseis display of Iaido, Kendo and

Aikido took Mikes breath away and he knew

instantly that he had to become his student.

In 1984 Mike and Otani Sensei opened the

Yodokan in Brockley, South London - a full

time dojo within which both Otani Sensei and

Mike broadened their skills and were able to

teach a greater number of students at one

time. Sadly, Otani Sensei died from stomach cancer in 1991.

In 2008, Mike went to Kyoto, Japan for the 3rd World

Butokusai. The team was: Mike Selvey, Geoff Murray,Charles Goulding, Glenn Coxon, Stuart Binns.

Mike says: We spent 2 nights in Tokyo and, whilst

there, we visited, amongst other sights, Sengaku-Ji, the

famous, (among Martial artists) Temple of the 47 Ronin,

Mount Fuji to pay our respects to Sensei Tudor Box, we

also visited the Imperial Palace and the Meiji shrine.

On 24th we moved down to Kyoto to take part in training and seminars with

Honbu Instructors and to demonstrate at the 3rd World Butoku Sai and

Commemorative Rensei Taikai along with 650 other International Members

from 82 Dojos and 40 Countries.

    The programme was:

April 25th: Orientation and rehearsals in the Budo

    centre and the historic Butokuden.

April 26th: Training day in the Budo centre,

Tsunami members trained under the instruction

of Sensei Takayama.April 27th: Free day. We visited Nijo Castle and the

    ancient philosophers walk.

April 28th: Official beginning of the 3rd World

Butokusai, started with a greeting from Deputy

    Sosai, Higashifushimi Jiko and dignitaries.

April 29th:The 3rd World Butokusai began with the Heian shrine dedication

ceremony, and then at the Butokuden Tsunami Yodokan demonstrated Tenshin

ryu Iaido along with all DNBKID teams, followed by demonstrations by Honbumembers.

April 30th: DNBKID commemorative Rensei Taikai, Tsunami Dojo

    demonstrated Iaido and Kobudo.

Tsunami Yodokan were honoured to receive the following awards: Doryuko

Sho team award for Iaido at World Butoku Sai and Commemorative Rensei

Taikai , Leadership Award for Mike Selvey and individual awards for Geoff

Murray, Glenn Coxon, Charles Goulding and Stuart Binns. In addition Mike Selvey was awarded the grade of Godan (5th Dan) Iaido,

Geoff Murray 4th Dan, Charles Goulding 3rdDan and Glenn Coxon 2ndDan.

The event was fantastic and one we will never forget; D.N.B.K.I.D

organisers under Hanshi Hamada did a fantastic job. Everything ran

perfectly and we were overwhelmed by the entire experience, we met old

friends and made many new ones, we cannot wait till the next event.

The team travelled back to Tokyo the next morning, we stayed at a

traditional Inn near the Asakusa temple, we did some shopping and relaxedbefore flying back to the UK the next day.

I was very proud to attend such a prestigious event and also very proud of

my team and being part of the D.N.B.K. We go from strength to strength.

Mike and the team travelled to Belgium in 2009, where they were awarded

4 trophies and to Athens, Greece in 2010, where they were awarded 5

trophies. They stayed at home in 2011 because they were saving up to go

to Japan again this year. However, Mike and the team participate in major Martial Arts Events from

Birmingham to Brighton. Next week, Mike will go to Ankara, Turkey, for a

    demonstration at the British Embassy.

    Martial Arts

Japanese martial arts have been influenced by Chinese martial arts. As a

result, strands of Chan (Zen) Buddhism are woven into the martial fabric of

bushido (way of the warrior) and budo (martial way). Bushido emphasizes

courage, honor, duty, respect, benevolence, wisdom, honesty, loyalty,

    rectitude, wisdom and self-sacrifice.

In his Zen and bushido-steeped 20 Precepts of Karate, founder Gichin

Funakoshi outlined the aim of karate as being not about victory or defeat butabout perfecting ones character. His dojo (training hall) philosophy stated

that one should seek perfection, excel in what they do, respect others, avoid

violence and be faithful. After World War II, bushido was replaced with the

more peaceful budo. Gosei Yamaguchi stated that karates purpose was to

protect oneself and train the mind and body and that the Way is not to

attack or harm others but to exercise restraint.

Chinese martial arts schools see the sifu like a father, whereas Japanese

schools view the sensei like an emperor.Martial Arts teach children about respect, discipline, hard work, sacrifice

and humility. Children are likewise taught that they should walk away from

trouble, lose the ego and fight only as a last resort. This blends in well with

Western Christian principles such as turning the other cheek, the Golden

    Rule and forgiveness.

Martial Arts are not for personal gain (money, fame, self-promotion, etc.): they

train you to become a better spiritual being and to take control of your life.

NO INCINERATOR NEAR PEOPLEThis is what they said:

Councillors Site Visit To Incinerator FacilityI thought Id let you have some feed back on my recent

visit to the Incinerator Depot near Heathrow recently.

All Councillors were afforded the opportunity to go

    have a look.

While Im firmly against this method of waste disposal

and want to promote cleaner safer technologies, I felt

it was important to see what we can expect for

Croydon if the Tories bulldoze this planning application through. The day didnt start too well as the mini bus that was due to pick us up had

broken down. After a bit of a sort out I found my self in the back of Cllr.

Claire George-Hilleys car with Cllr. Yvette Hopley in the front passenger

seat. It wasnt long before the conversation turned to Why are Labour so

against this, the residents of Waddon arent concerned, if anything parking

    is the greater issue.

My view is if you offer the residents of Waddon or anywhere else on the

planet a better alternative, they would go for it. All the questions Ive asked

as a Councillor at Council have been swerved and this just leads me to

believe that we wont stop this; however, lets keep trying to make this

administration try to see some sense.

The visit itself was very informative and centred around the height of the

chimney. The taller it is the safer it will be. Im not

too sure about this as the particles will come

down somewhere and it falling on somebodyelse is no answer to the intrinsic problem.

Claire and Yvette had to get off sharpish as they

were due at a Waddon clean up session. How

do you explain that litter picking is an activity we

need to do against an inadequate street cleaning

    contract with local residents?

I was kindly given a return lift by the Senior

manager for waste disposal who was quiteenthusiastic about the latest advances in how

we can minimise the environmental damage

through the incineration process. Unfortunately it looks like exploration of

other technologies such as I have proffered in my letters to the press a few

weeks ago will not see the light of day. Croydon people deserve better but

Im not sure they will get it under the present administration.

Location is Key, from a Wallington resident

Having accepted the principle of reduce, reuse and recycle to manage

waste, when the news of an Energy Recovery Facility was first announced

by the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP), the average resident could

be excused for thinking this could be a good idea. However, ignore the

cushioned language and it becomes apparent that regardless of the name

used, at the centre of this technology there is an incinerator. Your stomach

flips and your brain gets busy. You ask yourself what you really know about

incinerators and the more you delve, the more anxious you become. Thereis some pretty scary stuff out there. Perhaps you should take a look.

Viridor, who will soon be putting in a planning application to Sutton Council

to build the incinerator in Beddington, arranged tours to a current Energy

Recovery Facility. If you visit the Lakeside incinerator in Slough and look

down upon the area from the motorway, you will see that Lakeside is not

immediately surrounded by residential properties but by large green areas

with a scattering of factories or warehousing. At the front of the tall building

housing the incinerator, there is an attractive lake, home to swans and otherwildfowl and made use of by fisherman. In the centre of this lake there is an

Education Centre and it is here that visitors are first taken to be prepared for

their tour of the building. Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits are provided whilst

visitors are asked to read and sign the terms and conditions for the tour.

Everyone has to change into special shoes, wear a hard hat, put on a

visibility vest, gloves and plastic glasses while all personal items such as

handbags must be left behind. Taking photographs is forbidden.

Before the tour there is a presentation by a guide, followed by a questionand answer session which the guide will answer to the best of his ability

but they may not have all the facts and figures to hand so some questions

may be left unanswered. The tour begins on the fifth floor where it is possible

to view the first stage of the process through a glass window to see where

waste is dropped off by lorries into a large bunker. Here waste items are

picked up in a grab and moved around and dropped continuously in order

to dry the waste out before sending it off for burning. Employees sit in front

of computers inspecting the waste on screen and are happy to answerquestions as they zoom in and out on their computer screens to identify

any item which may need to be removed. Heat and pressure are also

monitored through various stages of the journey along the incinerator.

Moving on through the plant itself may not be for the faint hearted where it

is necessary to walk across metal grids through which you can see five

    floors down under your feet.

A glimpse into one part of the incinerator showed the orange heat of the

flames. Definitely not for sunbathing! Here the waste is burned, moved on,

burned again and so on moving through various temperatures. Once

downstairs again, the area holds containers full of frazzled metal pieces and

wire which during the incineration process do not burn down at the level of

temperature normally used and would then be taken to landfill sites. There

is also a conveyor holding ash, the toxic by product of the burnt waste and

this moves on to be used as aggregate on roads or sent to landfill. The final

part of the tour shows where the turbine is housed and where electricity isgenerated and transformed.

On reflection, there is no denying this is a clever technology which may be

a step forward compared to old style incinerators but risk factors remain

and therefore location must be a deciding factor in its use. As remarked

already, the vista all around Lakeside is largely green. There are no

immediately obvious residential areas whichever way you look. In contrast,

the facility proposed for Beddington Lane is set right in the heart of the

densely populated residential area of Sutton & Croydon in close proximityto Beddington Park Primary School and next to the much loved, well used

Beddington Park and nearby Nature Reserve with its rare birds. As well as

  • 7/31/2019 SL June 2012

    34/5634

increased noise and further jamming of overloaded roads through the

onslaught of further heavy vehicles coming to and from the site, it is

particularly worrying that The World Health Organisation has warned that

diesel exhaust is a major factor in the incidence of lung cancer.

Even if smoke is not to be seen coming from the actual stacks, this does

not mean that harmful emissions are not forthcoming and even though thelarger particulates are filtered and monitored in accordance with current

regulations, the smaller PM2.5 and nano-particulates, which are deemed in

some research to be possibly more harmful than the larger particulates, are

not monitored at all. Can anyone really guarantee there will be no impact of

emissions on the health and safety of the residents? Surely this should be

    of paramount concern.

Another key factor is the amount of water used daily by incinerators,

particularly when after the two-year drought, the South East was forced intoa hosepipe ban which is set to continue despite much needed rain fall.

Water is without doubt our most precious commodity and its use should

never be taken lightly particularly in the light of climate change.

So just how safe can the incinerator be? According to the Croydon Green

Party on their noincineratorforCroydon.blogspot.co.uk/2009, the opening

of Lakeside was set back two years in November 2009 when two gas

canisters, delivered against regulations, and not detected amongst the

delivered waste, had exploded during the trials. Whilst I am sure great care

is taken to avoid such accidents, human error cannot be eliminated

    completely in the future.

The reasons for objections are mounting up so people should sit up and

take notice. There is a need for more extensive research, stronger and

tighter regulations and acknowledgement that it is a human right to breathe

    in unpolluted air.

or Green Party members and the remainder of the people are those who like

    to go on marches."

Furthermore, he accused anti-incinerator campaigners of spreading

misinformation about the potential impact of an incinerator.

He said: All they are interested in is scare-mongering. There are 400 plus

facilities of this kind across Europe and the UK. Can they find anywhere inthe world where they have caused any health problems?

A comment that was published in the local paper The Guardian:

Health effects around incinerators !? If councillor Phil Thomas knew anything

about health, he would know that there are international norms for mortality

(not including morbidity) increases with extra air pollution. King's College

published research from the SELCHP air space in Lewisham that showed

increases in pollution of up to 184% above normal. That equates to lots of

extra heart attacks, respiratory deaths and extra old age deaths. Asthma

attacks of a severity requiring hospital admission increase by 700% above

general norms and 70% above urban norms. He is living in denial because

acknowledging the truth bankrupts the proposal, politically.

5 stars are equally awarded to

    Councillor Tim Pollard who wrote

an article for a local Residents

Association where he defined the incinerator mythical. Perhaps he was

trying to be sarcastic. He is

certainly in denial. Such ashame, given that he has a

    young family.

    He also seems to believe

    that an Energy Recovery

Facility is not the same thing

    as an incinerator.

In a cut and paste job, hegoes on to explain that over

    many decades the

    technology to manage heat-

    based methods of waste

    breakdown has come on in

    leaps and bounds, driven

    largely by the need to

    prevent contaminants

    leaking into the

    atmosphere. In the modern

    systems the waste gasses,

    and any particulates they

    contain, pass through a

    number of processes and

filters to remove all the harmful elements or compounds, before thecleaned gasses are finally released. He reassures his readers saying that

most large towns in continental Europe have an Energy Recovery Facility

somewhere in town which deals with its region's waste; that in Europe

these plants are well established, accepted by the population and there is

no evidence of any significant environmental impact from them; that

Energy Recovery Facilities in the UK are continuously monitored and the

results fed to Environment Agency monitoring stations in real time, so thatthe plant can be shut down immediately in the unlikely event of any rise in

    contaminants.

He might want to research the matters a little further! Editor

    Film presentation at Shirley Community

Centre: on Saturday 30 June at 7.30pm.

This will be a special Italian-themed

evening featuring 16mm film, presented bythe Save the David Lean Cinema

    Campaign and Shirley Community Centre

    Association. The highlight will be

    'Everybody's Fine', a 1990 film directed by

Giuseppe Tornatore soon after his much-

    acclaimed 'Cinema Paradiso'. Marcello

Mastroianni - often considered the premier

Italian actor of the post-war era - plays anelderly gentleman who decides to surprise

his five children, living in different regions

of Italy, with unexpected visits. In the

course of this adventure, he discovers

their lives are not necessarily as successful

and problem-free as he imagined. We are

screening a very good print with the original Italian soundtrack and English

subtitles. The programme will also include a 1960 travelogue featuring Tuscany.Ice creams and light refreshments will be served in the interval. Admission is free

but it will cost a significant sum to present this event, so donations would be

appreciated. It should be a very enjoyable event that will both promote the

campaign and support efforts to make the venue a focal point for the local

community, so please come along if you can. Care has been taken to avoid

clashing with any Euro 2012 matches!

Shirley Community Centre is in Shrublands Avenue, Shirley, CR0 8JA. It's very close

to the Broom Road shops and Post Office and the 194 and 198 buses stop nearby.Parking is available in the area. Please book to ensure that you have a seat. You

can do so by emailing us, or by telephoning 020 8777 4298 (leaving a message if

the answering machine is on) or 07940 415532.

David Lean programmer selects films for Campaigns July season at the

    Spread Eagle

Following two previous seasons at the Spread Eagle pub in Katharine Street,

the Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign are presenting another in July. On

this occasion, the films have been selected by former David Lean programmer

Christine Sales, who was involved in all aspects of managing the cinema, from

its opening in 1995 until its closure last year.

Campaign Chairman Adrian Winchester said: Its very

rewarding to have had Christines input to this season. Her

experience and expertise in selecting films that David Lean

audiences enjoyed will now be appreciated by our

    supporters at the Spread Eagle.

The season offers a diverse selection of five modern films,

from the UK, France, USA and South America. It

commences on Tuesday 3 July with The Help, the huge hit

that offers an absorbing view of how African-American

maids in the American South viewed their white employers in the early 1960s.

It concludes with the Argentinian film Las Acacias on Wednesday 25 July.

    The full programme is:

    3 July:The Help (USA 2011) 2.30 and 8.00 pm

    10 July:The Well Diggers Daughter (France 2011) 2.30 and 8.00 pm

    17 July: Coriolanus (UK 2012) 2.30 and 8.00 pm

24 July: Win Win (USA 2011) 2.30 and 8.00 pm

25 July: Las Acacias (Argentina 2011) 2.30 pm only

Screening at the David Lean Cinema

We recently had a positive meeting at the

Clocktower with Aileen Cahill (Head of

Libraries and Culture) in relation to our aim toarrange a screening at the David Lean

Cinema. This has literally been on our agenda

    since last September. We appreciated

Aileen's willingness to discuss a number of

practical points in some detail and as a result, we now seem to be a significant

step closer to achieving this objective. Aileen confirmed that the DLC's digital

projector has been returned to the council. We advised Campaign members

last year that it was unsuitable for an auditorium much larger than the DLC,and 35mm has been used for all the 'David Lean Cinema at Fairfield'

screenings. The projector was therefore gathering dust at the Fairfield so it's

good news that it has been - or soon will be - returned to its proper home in

the DLC's projection box. The projector may now need to be re-calibrated, but

Aileen has helpfully expressed a willingness to arrange this.

A screening would of course have to be properly licensed and appropriate fees

paid, but we have looked into this and it is perfectly achievable. We must accept

that the David Lean 'brand' is currently in use at the Fairfield, so we would beunable to refer to the venue as the DLC, but we don't consider it a major

compromise to use a name such the Clocktower Cinema. Ideally, it would be

    41

    42/5642

good to launch a series of screenings that will draw attention to the Clocktower

and help to build a support base that should help to make a permanently re-

opened DLC a success, but a first screening involves overcoming certain

challenges, so this is the initial focus. Films would have to be screened in the

afternoons as unfortunately any hire after 6.00pm would be far more

complicated and expensive, in view of the Clocktower otherwise being closed.

We can't predict exactly how long it will take to get the DLC ready for use again

as a film-screening venue, but we hope to have further news in the reasonably

near future. In the longer term, we of course hope to see the cinema fully

reopened within a revitalised Clocktower, preferably managed as a Social

Enterprise. Such a development would be linked to the council's Community

Asset Transfer programme and news of this will be included in our next update.

    Campaign badges

We received these just in time to offer themat the screenings of 'The Artist'. They have

already proved popular, with half of our initial

stock of 100 already sold. They say "SAVE

THE DAVID LEAN CINEMA" in the same

lettering as on our logo - a photo can be

seen on our Facebook page. The price is

only 50p. They will be available at the

forthcoming Shirley and Spread Eaglescreenings. If you would like to order one or

more by post, contact us for details. They can also be picked up, by

arrangement, from near Trinity School in Shirley.

    Can you help?

Although it's very positive to see our membership growing (we should soon

reach 400) and a gradual expansion in our activities, our committee is

becoming increasingly stretched with regard to achieving all we would like to

do. We would therefore welcome the input of a few more enthusiastic

members, so if you might be willing to join the committee, please let us know.

This need not involve a major commitment in terms of hours and no one is

asked to do anything that they don't feel suited for. Even if you're not

inclined to be on the committee, you may be able to help us in other ways,

such as recruiting new members; passing on news to members without

email; or being a volunteer at future DLC screenings, so please also let us

know if you could assist in such ways or could perhaps offer other talents. For additional updates, film presentation reminders, etc,

About Andrew Dunsmoreof Picture Partnership, Shirley

Tips for your olympic photographsThe Olympic games are almost upon us with unlimited photographic

opportunities to capture the athletes attempts to go faster, higher or further.

Capturing the atmosphere of a world-renowned sporting event is another

opportunity. Specialist sports photographers use a variety of expensive

lenses, including 300mm or longer, which are useful but not essential, as

first class photographs can be achieved by amateurs by following some

    guidelines.

Generally, you will want to capture a persons or a teams position or todemonstrate speed, agility, skill, etc.. For this, you, the photographer, must

focus yourself on what you want to capture and, as always, be prepared for

all eventualities. If using film, carry sufficient spare, fast film, and battery if

you intend using flash; if using digital, ensure a clear card to start and maybe

    carry a few spare.

As a guide, use a 1/500th shutter speed or faster to freeze action, but to

suggest speed, pan with your camera at about 1/60th or slower, but if too

slow, beware of camera shake. Remember that your flash is effective onlyover a relatively short distance. To capture a fireworks display, a good guide

is to use 1600 ISO film or digital and 1/125th at f.8; the fireworks provide

their own light. However, if taking a photograph of someone with fireworks

in the background, then use of flash would be indicated.

If you are not used to photographing such events, practice beforehand. Go

to the park or to school sports, freeze passing cars on a fast road and then

pan with your camera at different angles of approach and at different

distances from you. You may not have much choice of location at an event,

but you will then have more experience of any limitations.

Get some idea of the treatment of different sports from Picture Partnerships

window or come in and have yourself photographed in our studio in your

favourite sports kit and equipment. Have your own Olympic family

photograph worth more to your family and friends than a Gold at the

    other venue! And more memorable.
