What is SCAN?The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act (SCAN) is a civil legislation that investigates residential and commercial properties that residents identify as issues in their community. Once a resident reports to SCAN, investigators will begin a process to access and determine the issue with that property.

SCAN targets properties, not people. If criminal activity is uncovered by the unit, CPS and SCAN investigators will work together to resolve the issue. SCAN investigators investigate drug and sex trafficking and/or gang-related crime.

For more information visit scan.alberta.ca or call 1-866-960-7226.

In Our Community2018 Skyview Ranch/RedStone/Cityscape Summer Soccer Camp ProgramOnline registration for the summer soccer camp at www.skyviewsoccer.ca/summer-soccer-camp

This is a special program for kids from 2 and half year old and upward. This is a special program for skills development for the U8 and upward and is a program of more fun with the ball to the U4 and U6.

Lessons take place every Monday and Wednesday from the first week of July to the second week of August. This is a total of 6 weeks of soccer.

Practices are 1 hour with 30 minutes of game for the U8 and upward. For U4 and U6 practice will be just 1 hour.

The following lessons are developed for the camp:

Week 1 (Tuesday July 3rd & Wednesday July 4th, 2018)Ball Control / First Touch Emphasis will be placed on being able to control and trap the ball using both feet, chest, thigh, head and other parts of the body.

Week 2 (Monday July 9th & Wednesday July 11th, 2018)Ball Skills (Fast Feet)This application is to learn specific moves which enable you to maneuver better with the ball. The coaches will teach the fire dance, inside roll, outside roll, pull turn and other advanced maneuvers. When a student learns the fast feet skills, he/she is better adept at handling and controlling the ball. This builds confidence and self-esteem in playing the game of soccer.

Week 3 (Monday July 16th & Wednesday July 18th, 2018)Ball JugglingHelps the student gain coordination and develops ball control. Many of our students are proud of their progress by increasing the number of times that they can juggle. We will encourage students to use both feet, thighs and head.

Week 4 (Monday July 23rd & Wednesday July 25th, 2018)Ball Passing & ShootingWill be taught using the inside and outside of both feet, one and two touches passing, and short & long passes. The technical and tactical skills will focus on passing to a player, passing in front of a player and moving into space to receive a pass. Shooting – the focus is to learn and develop the fundamentals of kicking such as a proper stance, planting of the foot, and follow through. Students will learn the art of shooting with both feet and being able to shoot accurately using the laces, inside and outside of both feet.

Week 5 (Monday July 30th & Wednesday August 1st, 2018)Dribbling & HeadingWill concentrate on being able to dribble using the inside and outside of both feet, in very tight situations, on long runs with the ball close to your feet, and while cutting in every direction possible. Heading – students will learn to use the head properly and effectively to score goals, pass to teammates, or just to control the ball.

Week 6(Tuesday August 7th & Wednesday August 8th, 2018)Special Week with Invited Coach An invited coach will be present at this last week of the camp to share his know-how and experience with the campers. His drills will mostly focus on skill development, team building, and small-sided games. Emphasis is also placed on enjoyment and appreciation of the game of soccer. This week’s activities will culminate with a World Cup on the final day.

Week 7(Monday Aug 13th & Wednesday Aug 15th, 2018) Small World Cup, Medals & Certificates

In Our CommunityCouncillor ReportDear Ward 5 Resident:

As we come into the month of May, we can look forward to warmer weather and sunnier skies! I am excited to connect with some of our gardening residents who take the initiative to grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers in their back yards. If you have a garden that you are proud of, please e mail your photos and provide a brief description, as we might just publish it on our social media! Gardening is not only a great way of saving money, and eating nutritious food, but you also get great exercise and free Vitamin D!

There are a couple of major items that are in front of City Council and will affect the lives of Calgarians. First, we have a budget cycle year in 2018 and I want to know what you feel is lacking from a municipal perspective. Second, is the conversation surrounding the Olympics and whether or not we should bid on the 2026 Games. Please let me know where you stand, and the basis of your position. It is fundamental to our democracy that we engage our citizens and I encourage you to contact my office to start this conversation!

The City of Calgary has developed regulations and processes to accommodate the upcoming national legalization of recreational cannabis. From November 2017 to January 2018, The City carried out extensive research and engagement to hear how Calgarians wanted to see cannabis regulated. While The City’s response to legalization will need to work within the federal legislation and the provincial framework, the feedback we received has been important in amending bylaws and determining regulations that addressed areas of citizen concern. For details on The City's approach to legalized recreational cannabis, please visit Calgary.ca/cannabis or call 3-1-1.

Calgary’s fifth annual Neighbour Day is set to take place on Saturday, June 16, 2018. Neighbour Day is an opportunity to get together with your neighbours and celebrate Calgary’s strong community spirit. It originated in 2014 to celebrate the incredible outpouring of support and generosity neighbours demonstrated after the 2013 floods. For a fifth consecutive year, The City is waiving its fee for approved block party and greenspace permit bookings on Neighbour Day. The deadline to submit permit applications is Friday, May 25, 2018. Additional information can be found at Calgary.ca/NeighbourDay. As mentioned last month, The City kicked off its

Community Clean-ups this month. These events are hosted by the community associations with

support from Calgary Community Standards and Waste & Recycling at the City. Reminder

to residents that the event will run through to September. Check Calgary.ca/cleanup for the list of community associations that are hosting cleanup events. You can also check your community association web site for full details on the Community

Cleanup event in your community.

3-1-1 is your best way to access The City anytime, anywhere! This is a great resource

the City has set up and we want all of our residents to utilize this service. 3-1-1 is for non-emergency and non-law enforcement (e.g. by-law related issues, potholes, street cleaning etc.). You can download the 3-1-1 app on your phone for convenience, or just dial 3-1-1 the old fashioned way!

Please contact our office at [email protected] or join us on Twitter/Facebook @ChahalGeorge to keep your finger on the pulse for everything Ward 5 and the City of Calgary!

In Our CityMunicipal News by Anne Burke

New CommunitiesA Council Committee recommends that Calgary should increase the level of City commitment and investment in new communities, beginning with the 2019 – 2022 budget cycle.

There is a proposed study of the financial implications for the 2019-2022 budget cycle, future budget cycles, and how any gaps for operating and capital would be funded, using the property tax.

Further, the New Community Growth Strategy will be partnered with findings and recommendations toward the development of an Established Areas Growth Strategy. A report is due in July or Sept. 2018.

More Access ReviewAfter a review of Accessible Taxis and Calgary Transit Access, a report to a Council Committee recommends support for on-demand accessible taxi service, as well as improving customer service.

There would be an accessible incentive program, funded by a per-trip fee, and, if approved, changes to the Livery (Cars for Hire) Transport Bylaw, after a report to Council for approval no later than July or Sept. 2018.

The second phase is monitoring the effectiveness of the program, for up to 2 years, and whether a pilot central dispatch is needed, using Calgary Transit Access as a resource, as well as new technologies. A report to Council is due in 2020.

Green Cart ChargeCity Council voted to implement every-other-week green cart collection over the winter months (Nov. to April) starting in Nov. 2018. The charge for the green cart program should appear in the 2019-2022 rates and fees for Waste & Recycling Services. The report should return to the April 25th Strategic Session of Council. There is a one-year transition plan, including “vacated tax support”, if any, by the province, in the “One Calgary” service plans and budget discussions.

Transit Park & Ride ImprovementsUp to 50% of Park & Ride stalls at a given lot can be used for reserved parking (on weekdays from 2:00 am - 10:00 am) with the remainder free.

Some of the aims at Calgary Transit Park & Ride lots will be to:• Make Park & Ride easier to use by ensuring a space.• Offer some free stalls on all C-Train lines• Build ridership by competitive pricing, with

alternatives, and optimum use of stalls• Respond to changing technology and improve the

customer experience\

A Transit Feasibility Study will assess the demand for “satellite” Park & Ride lots outside the city limits, with bus service to Calgary. Calgary Metropolitan Region Board has a mandate to consider inter-municipal transit, but City Administration asked for more time. A report is due by mid-2019.

Public Art, More or LessThe City Public Art program began in 2014. Council voted to “immediately suspend” further requests for proposals, as of Sept. 15, 2017, until a new process is approved. However, as of April 1, 2018, City staff has asked for exemptions.

The annual programs provide jobs to local artists during the summer, such as Painted Utility Boxes, Street Art for Youth (a mural program), and Artists Working in Community (with the City’s My Neighbourhood initiative.) Moving the Centre Street Bridge “Lion” to Rotary Park was previously directed by Council and needs to be done in good weather.

There will be more recommendations, after the interim progress report, and most requests can continue to be postponed until Council receives the Final Report in June 2018.

How Much do Water Leaks Really Cost? When it comes to residential and

household leaks, toilets, faucets and outdoor irrigation are the most common culprits, although any water using device can eventually leak.

Water is measured in cubic metres (m3)

The average Calgarian uses approximately 7 m3 every month.1 m3 = 1,000 litres7 m3 = 7,000 litres

For 2018, each cubic metre costs $3.15*Leaks can range in size. A chain caught under a toilet flapper can waste 3 m3/month. A leak this size could increase your bill by $9.45 each month. If the water level in the toilet tank is too high and overflowing into the overflow tube or the flapper is completely lifted it can waste up to 1,200 m3/month. A leak this size could increase your bill by $3,780.48 each month.**

In the case of a leaky faucet, the size and cost of leaks can range as well. One drop per second can waste 2.5 m3/month. A leak this size could increase your bill by $7.87 each month. A small stream of water can waste 15 m3/month. A leak this size could increase your bill by $47.26 each month.

A steady flow of water accidentally left running can waste 360 m3/month. A leak this size could increase your bill by $1,134.14 each month. ***

Use your water meter to check for leaks. In Calgary most water meters are installed inside the house where the water pipe enters your home. This is usually in the basement, near your main water shut-off valve.1. Turn off all taps and water appliances (dishwashers,

washing machines) in your home.2. Watch the flow register on the face of the meter. The

register could look like a gear (round or triangular, black or red) or a needle depending on the model of meter you have.

3. If it keeps turning, you have a leak somewhere in your house.

4. Check all water using devices, such as your taps, humidifier, hot water heater and water softener for leaks.

Freshen Up the Laundry Room Lately I am crushing on laundry

spaces. We are all laundry people. The freshness of clean clothes can be so rewarding. I mean seriously, how about that warmth of a clean towel from the dryer? Amazing! Whether you have a laundry room or your laundry area is tucked behind a closet door with a single shelf above them, your clean-clothes space can be a happy place. Spruce yours up this May and make laundry fun again!

• Add a vase of flowers to enjoy on the day you do most of your laundry.

• Hang a whimsical sign about the joys of laundry, or a framed picture of laundry symbols to the wall beside your machines.

• Use baskets to hide the box of laundry sheets, the bottle of soap, or stain remover. This will clean up the area and help organize the space.

• Do laundry and listen to music; something bright and airy.

• Keep the space clean and tidy. Throw out that bag holding the dryer lint, and bits of paper or half a sandwich that you pulled out of the kid’s pockets.

• Focus on the joys of clean. Laundry is a refresh and a do-over that smells amazing and makes us feel great!
