YOUR DUTY TO UNDERSTAND AND COMPLY.1. It is the responsibility of the riggers and the operators,

and their employer’s responsibility, if they operate underan employer’s control, to strictly conform to the followingwarnings.

2. It is imperative for safety and efficiency of operationsthat this manual be read and fully understood by therigger and the operator before rigging or operating theplatform. All instructions contained herein must becarefully and strictly followed, including applicableSIA for safe practices.

3. Should you hand over a platform under whateverconditions, to any party operating out of your control, youmust attach a clean copy of this manual and draw to otherparty’s attention that strictly following all the instructionstherein is a matter of life or death.

4. Before rigging and operating this platform, the rigger andthe operator must become aware of all the requirementsof federal, state, provincial and local safety regulations notonly applicable to the platform but also to the entiresuspended scaffold system and any component of it.

5. Never use the scaffold platform for any job other thanlifting personnel on suspended scaffold according to theinstructions of this manual.

6. Never load the platform above its rated load.

YOUR DUTY TO INSPECT AND MAINTAIN.

7. Keep this manual available at all times for easy referencewhenever required. Extra copies are available through theequipment supplier.

8. Carefully take notice of all the labels affixed to theplatform. Never rig or operate the platform if any label, normally fixed on it is obscured or missing. Replacementlabels are available through the equipment supplier.

9. Every time the platform is to be rigged or used, check thatthe platform, hoists, wire ropes and other components ofthe suspended scaffold system are complete and in goodworking condition, prior to proceeding.

10. A careful and regular inspection of the platform hoists, wire ropes and other components of the installation is partof the safety requirements. If you have a question, call theequipment supplier.

11. Maintenance may only be carried out by personnelauthorized by Safway. A signed and datedinspection record should be maintained.

12. After each de-rigging and before re-rigging, the platformmust be inspected by a competent person familiar withthe platform and professionally trained for the purpose.

13. Inspection by persons authorized bySafway is to be carried out onceevery six months or every 200 hours.

14. The manufacturer declines any responsibility forconsequences of repairs or modifications brought out ofits control to the product, specially by replacement oforiginal parts or repair by another manufacturer.

YOUR DUTY TO TRAIN AND CONTROL PEOPLE.

Compliance with safety rules extends to rigging operationswhich must be carried out only after securing safe conditionsof operation as per safety regulations and requirements.

15. An operator must not be assigned to a suspended job orto rigging for a suspended job, or to de-rigging after thejob, if that person is not:

a) mentally and physically fit for the purpose especially atheights.

b) competent for the job to be performed.

c) familiar with the scaffold equipment as rigged.

d) professionally trained for working under the aboverequirements.

Except for the operations described in this manual, themaintenance of the platform unit, as well as repair, mustbe exclusively done by repairers authorized bySafway. Spare parts used for all equipment must be exclusively in accordance with the serial number of each product. No substitutions are allowed.

16. Never let the platform or other components of asuspended scaffold system be managed or operated byany person other than authorized and assigned to thejob. Keep the equipment, either rigged or unrigged, out ofreach of unauthorized persons, while out of operation.

17. Training operators and riggers includes setting up rescueprocedure should a scaffold be brought to a standstillduring a job. Such procedure must be set up by acompetent person of the user, or its technical consultant, according to the working conditions, prior to putting theequipment into operation.

YOUR DUTY TO SAFETY BEYOND THE PLATFORM

The Skysafe equipment has been specially designed to be fittedwith Saturn hoists. As being only one piece of a scaffold system, the platformcan contribute to the required safety only if:

19. Compatibility of other brands of hoists has been verified &approved by Safway engineering department.

20. It is fitted on compatible equipment.

21. Other components meet the requirements of the applicablesafety regulations and requirements, are of the properquality, assembled to form a safe and efficient suspendedscaffold system and are approved by Safwayengineering department

22. Every upper support of the scaffold is stable, sufficientlystrong and properly tied back to the structure, according tothe load either static or dynamic.

23. The supporting structure and tie-backs, are required towithstand applied loading, either static or dynamic, duringrigging or operating the scaffold equipment.

24. All the requirements in strength and resistance are obtainedwith the necessary safety coefficients (see regulations andprofessional standards).

25. All the calculations, design and subsequent work necessaryto meet the above requirements have been made by acompetent person on the basis of proper technicalinformation regarding the site.

YOUR DUTY TO AVOID TAKING CHANCES.

26. Once the suspended platform has been lifted off its initialsupport (ground or any other level), it is imperative not torelease, remove, alter or obstruct any part of the equipmentunder load.

27. NEVER allow any condition which would result in asuspension wire rope becoming SLACK during theoperation unless:

a) the suspended platform is safely supported on a safesurface giving a safe access to the operator in compliancewith safety regulations.

b) or unless another suspension wire rope has been safelyrigged to the suspension platform.

28. Never operate a platform and its accessories, especiallyelectric ones, in a potentially explosive atmosphere.

29. For any job to be performed on the suspended equipment, consider and control the specific risks related to the natureof the job.

30. Should you decide that this platform is no longer to be used, take precautions in disposing of it so that it cannot be usedanymore.

31. The manufacturer declines any responsibility for anyspecial rigging or structural combinations beyond thedescriptions of this manual.

32. The manufacturer declines any responsibility for anyother use of the platforms than described in thismanual.

AN ULTIMATE RECOMMENDATION

Never neglect means to improve safety. Due to the risks inherent in the use of suspended scaffolding, it is stronglyrecommended that every installation be equipped withsecondary wire rope(s) fitted with a separate fall arrestsystem, anchored to a safe separate point of the buildingstructure.

Operators on the scaffold should be equipped with anemergency means of communication such as radio ortelephone should rescue be necessary.

This manual is neither a regulations compliancemanual nor a general training guide on suspendedscaffold operations. You must refer to properinstructions delivered by manufacturers of the otherpieces of equipment included in your suspendedscaffold installation. Whenever calculations andspecific rigging and handling are involved, the operatorshould be professionally trained to that end and securerelevant information prior to commencing such work.

4. ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

SKYSAFE modular platforms sections are available in twodistinct models:

1. Rigid Modular Sections – These models are weldedaluminum, with the deck and two side sections permanentlyconnected. Platforms with rigid sections are quick to assemble.

2. Knockdown Modular Sections – Knockdown models aresupplied with the deck and two side sections ready to assembletogether with ball lock pins. These sections allow compactstorage, ease of transportation and access through restrictedopenings.

SKYSAFE Rigid and Knockdown Modular Sections work withall stirrups listed in this manual. Both sections are compatible onany platform assembly.

4.1 ASSEMBLY OF KNOCKDOWN COMPONENTS INTO MODULAR SECTIONS

Knockdown platforms are easy to assemble.

1 Check components before assembly. Two side sections and onedeck of length are required for any of the 1m, 2m & 3m (3 ft,6.5 ft & 10 ft) assemblies.

2 Ensure that both the connecting ends of the deck and the slotat the inside of both side section toeboards are free of debris.Carefully remove any buildup before assembly.

3 Inspect Ball Lock Pins for damage prior to installation.

4 Connect the side sections to the deck by aligning the providedholes at the toeboard slot. (see fig. 6)

5 Secure the components together with ball pins provided.

Once assembled, SKYSAFE Modular Knockdown Platformsections can be used with SKYSAFE Rigid Modular Platformsections only if U-Frame Connector MODKDUF is used at theintermediate connection.

For platforms with more than one Knockdown PlatformSection, it is necessary to assemble the modules together.

a. Bring the required modules for the specific platformlength.

b. Align the modules on a level surface.

c. Adjacent modules are only connected with U-Frameconnector MODKDUF.

d. Use 4 four gravity lock pins provided with the KnockdownPlatform side panels to attach the U-frame to the end ofa Knockdown Platform Section. Always insert gravity lockpins from the inside of the platform section. Do nothammer or force the pins into place.

e. Use only the supplied 5/8 inch diameter gravity lock pins.Make sure that the pins are not worn, bent or otherwisedamaged. Never substitute alternative pins, bolts or anyother connector for the U-Frame Connector MODKDUF.

Suspended ScaffoldSafety GuidelinesB. Erecti on

1. Outrigger beams, parapet clamps or roof hooks may be used to support the suspended scaff old. Be sure the building is capable of supporti ng the necessary loads. In additi on, each of these devices must be att ached to a structurally sound porti on of the building with a suitable ti eback to prevent accidental movement of the outrigger beam, parapet clamp or roof hook.

2. Tiebacks must have the equivalent strength of the hoisti ng rope. Tiebacks shall be installed without slack. Whenever possible, ti ebacks must be installed at right angles to the face of the building. If ti ebacks cannot be installed at right angles, two opposing angle ti ebacks, without slack, shall be used for each outrigger beam, parapet clamp and roof hook.

3. Parapet clamps and roof hooks must only be installed on structurally adequate parapets that can withstand the bending loads imposed on them by the parapet clamp or roof hook under maximum load conditi ons.

! WARNINGANY OUTRIGGER BEAM, PARAPET CLAMP OR ROOF HOOK USED TO SUPPORT THE SUSPENSION WIRE ROPE S MUST BE PROPERLY ANCHORED OR TIED BACK TO PREVENT A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLD. TIEBACKS SHALL BE INSTALLED WITHOUT SLACK TO A STRUCTURALLY SOUND PORTION OF THE BUILDING.

4. The outrigger beams shall rest on suitable wood bearing blocks which are perpendicular to the outrigger beams.

5. Overhang of outrigger beams must not exceed the maximum allowable dimension as shown in the appropriate instructi ons for the load being used.

6. Counterweights shall provide a minimum safety factor of 4:1 against overturning. Each shall be made of a non-fl owing material and permanently marked with its weight. All counterweights must be securely fastened to the outrigger beam or to some other securely att ached structural member designed for that purpose. Refer to user instructi ons to determine the number of counterweights.

7. All overhead rigging, counterweights, anchorages and connecti ons must be secured and adequately restrained from movement in any directi on.

8. When installing the tracti on type hoisti ng machines, make sure wire ropes are long enough to extend from the highest point of support to the lowest point of the structure plus 3 ft . extra for the 30 series hoist. This allows for reeving.

Scaffold safety is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone’s safety depends upon the design, erection, use, and dismantling of scaffold by Competent Persons only. Inspect your scaffold before each use to see that the assembly has not been altered and is safe for your use.Note: All personnel on suspended scaffold are required to wear a fall arrest device properly attached. The lifeline must be attached to a structurally sound anchorage independent of the scaffold support.

! WARNINGSERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH CAN RESULT FROM YOUR FAILURE TO FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF, AND COMPLY WITH ALL APPLICABLE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL, STATE, PROVINCIAL AND LOCAL REGULATIONS AND THESE SAFETY GUIDELINES BEFORE ERECTING, USING OR DISMANTLING THIS SCAFFOLD.

Safety must come fi rst!Safway® equipment is designed and manufactured with the user in mind. The safety that goes into each piece of equipment, however, cannot offset carelessness on the part of the erector or the user. Follow these safety guidelines in order to prevent injury to the users of Safway® equipment.

Scaffold design must include analysis of load carrying members by properly qualified personnel. Safway® component load capacity and weight information is available from Safway. Scaffold must be erected, used, moved and disassembled only under the supervision of Competent Persons.

! WARNINGIF EXPOSED TO THE POSSIBILITY OF A FALL DURING RIGGING, PROPERLY ATTACHED FALL ARREST OR PREVENTION EQUIPMENT MUST BE USED.

I. Erecti on of Suspended Scaff oldsA. Prior to Erecti on

1. Each scaff old shall be installed or relocated under the supervision of a Competent Person.

2. Read the operati ng and maintenance instructi ons provided with the hoist equipment and follow them at all ti mes. Before installati on, assure roof or supporti ng structure is capable of safely supporti ng at least 4 ti mes the rated load of the hoist and rigging equipment.

3. Inspect all equipment before using and assure all bolted connecti ons are ti ght.

! WARNINGDO NOT SECURE THE BOTTOM END OF THE WIRE ROPE USED TO SUSPEND THE SCAFFOLD. WIRE ROPE CAN BECOME KINKED AND BREAK IF THE BOTTOM END IS PREVENTED FROM ROTATING FREELY AS THE SCAFFOLD IS RAISED AND LOWERED.

9. Do not install scaff old in the vicinity of power lines unti l the power service company has been contacted and the electrical power has been disconnected.

10. Never install scaff olds in the vicinity of exposed electrical circuits unti l it is assured that such exposed circuits cannot aff ect any part of the scaff old assembly.

11. Handle all equipment with care, and prevent wire ropes from becoming kinked. Do not drop equipment during handling, loading or unloading. Do not install or use damaged equipment.

12. Connecti on of wire rope to the rigging must be made with proper fi tti ngs designed for that purpose. See the operati ng and maintenance instructi ons provided with the hoist equipment. Never wrap wire ropes around overhead rigging or use makeshift devices. Hoisti ng machines on two-point suspension scaff olds must be located on the same centerline as the rigging.

13. Two or more scaff olds must not be combined in a run by lapping platf orms on one sti rrup or by bridging between them, except for multi -point suspension scaff olds or specially engineered systems. Doing so could cause rigging or platf orm to fail.

14. Assure platf orm and toeboards are properly installed and platf orm staging is secured to the sti rrups. Make sure that guardrails and midrails are properly installed on all open sides and ends of the work platf orm. Use wire mesh screen between guardrail and toeboards where required.

15. Install overhead protecti on when a falling object hazard exists.

16. Angulated rope suspension systems, lashing or other devices shall be used to minimize swaying of scaff olds. Window cleaner’s anchors shall not be used for this purpose.

II. Use of Suspended Scaff olds 1. All damaged equipment should be tagged, set

aside and your employer noti fi ed immediately so it is not used by others.

2. Weight of personnel, material, hoist, components and scaff old must not exceed rati ng of the hoists and rigging system used.

3. Never step onto a suspended scaff old unless you are wearing a properly att ached fall arrest device.

4. When using the drum type hoisti ng machines, at least four turns of the wire rope must remain on the drum at all ti mes. The end of the wire rope must be properly secured to the drum.

5. Do not use suspended scaff olds in corrosive atmospheres or with corrosive chemicals. Wire ropes, aluminum platf orms and other parts of the scaff old are suscepti ble to serious damage if exposed to fi re, undue heat, corrosive atmospheric conditi ons or corrosive chemicals. Take precauti ons to protect wire ropes when using welding equipment. If exposure to these conditi ons occurs or is suspected, immediately disconti nue use of the scaff old.

! WARNINGDO NOT USE SAFWAY® ELECTRIC HOISTS IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE.

6. Periodically inspect the wire rope for damage and wear; lubricate as needed and reti ghten the twin base wire rope clips. Inspect and test each ti me before use and/or aft er rerigging.

7. Inspect rigging, platf orm and hoists each ti me before use to make sure the equipment has not been altered.

8. Ensure that periodic lubricati on and other specifi ed maintenance procedures are fully complied with. Never alter, remove or substi tute parts or components of the hoisti ng machine or scaff old.

9. Before using electrically operated hoists, assure that the electrical power source and all power source connecti ons are properly grounded, that the power source is of the proper phase and voltage for the hoist, and be sure insulati on of wire and connecti ons are in good conditi on.

10. Impose loads on suspended scaff olds gently and without impact. Do not load equipment beyond recommended load capaciti es.

11. Do not weld from a suspended scaff old unless all precauti ons noted in the operati ng and maintenance instructi on book are implemented and followed.

12. Ground Fault Interrupters must be installed when electrical equipment is used or is located on suspended scaff olds.

13. When using a rolling outrigger system the following additi onal special precauti ons apply:

a. Use casters, outrigger base frames and outrigger beams only within the limits specifi ed on the instructi ons and literature supplied with the equipment.

b. Be sure loads imposed on the structure by the caster are dissipated by using devices to distribute the loads.

c. Use guide channels and move system only with suspended platf orm at its lowest positi on.

d. Do not ride the suspended platf orm while the rolling outrigger system is being moved.

e. Keep counterweights within the scaff old base dimension and secure them in positi on.

f. If outrigger height must be increased, do not raise higher than two ti mes the system’s minimum base dimension without increasing the rigging base dimension.

g. Tie the outrigger beam to the structure when in use.

14. When using an air operated hoist, never disconnect the air hose while the compressor is running and the lines are pressurized.

15. Restrain platf orm from movement during use immediately or when not being moved.

16. If damage or defects develop in the wire ropes, hoisti ng machine or other scaff old components, disconti nue use immediately and noti fy your employer.

17. Never use scaff old in the vicinity of exposed electrical circuits or power lines unti l it is assured that such exposed circuits or power lines cannot aff ect any part of the scaff old assembly.

18. Contact Safway for special rigging or applicati on informati on.

III. Dismantling Suspended Scaff oldsThe following additional precautions apply when dismantling suspended scaffolds.

1. Prior to removal or loosening of any component, consider the eff ect the removal of the component, or the loosening of a joint, will have on the strength of the remaining assembly.

2. Check to see if scaff old or rigging has been altered in any way which would make it unsafe. If so, reconstruct where necessary before beginning the dismantling process.

3. Disassemble the platf orm prior to removing any counterweights or ti ebacks.

4. Lower components in a safe manner. Do not throw components off roof.

5. Stockpile dismantled equipment in an orderly manner.

Understanding and following these safety guidelines will increase your personal safety and the safety of your fellow workers.

! WARNINGIT MAY BE NECESSARY TO ADD PARTS TO A SCAFFOLD BEFORE IT CAN BE DISMANTLED SAFELY.
