Fundraising 2017
PICTURE PLATES
Our final fundraiser for the year was the Picture Plate Products. The children created
some fantastic artwork which was placed onto plates or clocks for a special family
keepsake. This fundraiser raised over $250 for the Preschool.
THANKYOU
On behalf of the fundraising committee we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all families for your participation, generosity and support with all fund-raising events throughout the year.
We look forward to some exciting events next year

THREE YEAR OLD GROUP
COCKATOOS
Lisa & Rachel
Term 4 started off very smoothly, the children were all very happy to be back and catching up with
their peers. The children have all grown and developed into confident, inquisitive learners happy to
socialise and explore the kinder space. We welcomed two new children to our group who have both
settled in very well.
We began the term continuing to discuss and observe the lifecycle of the silkworms. A number of chil-
dren were very eager to feed them and have the opportunity to hold them. They are growing at a fast
rate and we are eager to see them spin their silk cocoon and transform into a moth.

We have started the activity of box construction and decorating as a follow on to our discussion of
recycling. Children are able to reuse old boxes and materials to decorate and make an art piece all
by using their imagination and creativity as a form of 3D art. As a group we were able to play a recy-
cle game using picture cards and bins. The aim of the activity was to discover which items could be
recycled, composted or thrown in the red bin.
Fine motor activities have continued to be very popular throughout the term. We have set up a
number of tinkering areas for the children to choose what they would like to work on and master.

Group games have also been very popular this term ranging from board games, to large floor puz-
zles to games in the yard. Group games are an effective way to build relationships and also to en-
courage children to follow rules, work together and cooperate.
This term we were also very pleased to have a drama incursion titled `Under the sea’. The children
were able to dress up as underwater divers, fish, octopus, dolphins, seaweed and jellyfish. The chil-
dren are able to engage with each other in the marine ecosystems. They explore animal movement,
the ocean habitat, the impact of pollution and of human interaction on marine life. All the children
were actively involved and were able to share fun and humour together.
Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the cock-
atoo children and their families a very merry Christmas and a happy
new year. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to work with
your beautiful children. We look forward to seeing you all again next
year.

As we start farewelling our kindergarten children for the year we reflect on what a wonderful experi-
ence we have all shared. We have achieved so many skills to take us onto our next
journey.
The kindergarten children have played and worked hard in such a
short amount of time. The children have got used to the routine of
kinder, the idea of being accountable to a new authority figure, de-
veloped key communication, learning and thinking skills, learnt to
build and maintain relationships and formed a strong sense of their
own identity. The kindergarten year is a crucial year to building the
foundation for learning.
The children have the opportunity to visit their primary schools and begin their transi-
tions into their new environment. It has been a great experience and an important
step in this major transition. It has been lovely to hear about the children’s transitions
and the exciting times they have had. We understand the school transition can be a
time of excitement and eagerness, but it can also be tinged with anxiety and concern.
We have talked positively about school, shared stories and shared photos and letters
with our group to support the connection to school and to make it a positive experi-
ence.
The kinder has been very busy lately with lots of the children engaging in activities of
many kinds. Of late the box construction has taken off. The children have created
houses and factories, computers, shields, phones and an assortment of creative ideas.
The children have put thought into this process and planned their constructions. They
have demonstrated problem solving skills, curiosity, persistence, commitment and cre-
ativity.
The children had “the best day” at traffic school. The children had the
opportunity to learn about road signs, how to keep safe around roads
and how to fit helmets properly and bike rules. They then cruised
around the traffic school. Some obeying the rules whilst others running through that
red light! The adults even had an opportunity to ride around and obey the rules.

Cooking has been a highlight with the Kookaburra children. They are always eager to experiment with
cooking. We dug out the potatoes we had harvested and made mashed potato and cooked a snags to go
with them. Fruit pops were made after a discussion on healthy eating and what our bodies need. Bis-
cuits were created. During all of these cooking experiments, the children used tools and took risks. Pota-
to peelers, children’s knifes, being around hot frying pans. Building trusting relationships with the chil-
dren and seeing them as competent learners allows children to take on risks. The children were always
looking at what to make next. Cooking with children is something everyone can do in the home. It incor-
porates, numeracy, literacy, and science.
This year we introduced body safety incursions into our kinder community. This was such a valuable
topic of discussion for children and their families. The children recognised the feelings of others, learn
the correct body parts terminology, practice how to say “No I don’t like that “or “do not touch me.” We
hope this conversation continues with all the children as they begin their new adventures.
We would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all of our wonderful children and families for
another year crammed full of fun and learning. We hope transition to school is an exciting and positive
experience to all those moving on, and we look forward to all of our children re-
turning in 2018.
Have a wonderful and safe Christmas and New Year.

ROSELLAS

With this final newsletter of the year I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for entrusting
your child in our care. It has been a privilege to spend the year together and watch them grow and de-
velop into the confident people they are today. We have enjoyed our time caring for them, planning
for them, listening to them, inspiring them (and being inspired by them), learning with them, being
their friends and role models and we hope your child and your family have enjoyed your time at South
Kingsville preschool in the Rosella group too.
Thank you for your input into the Transition to school statements. These documents will be a useful
tool for your child’s school to have a snapshot of what strengths and needs your child may have and
will help them when they begin at school in 2018.
This term we have watched the silk worms hatch from the eggs, then eat all the mulberry leaves and
grow big enough before spinning a cocoon of silk and transforming into a moth, then find a friend, lay
some eggs of their own and then die. The children have been very interested in this amazing lifecycle
and we watch the changes daily.
We had the incursion from Body Safe Australia, this focused on identifying our emotions, naming our bodies, Consent and bodily autonomy, Assertive communication skills and identifying our safe adults. We hope you found the program to be a positive one for your child and family. We have been to the Essendon traffic school, where the children learnt all about road safety skills and
had a fun day riding bikes around an area with stop signs, round-a-bouts, give way signs, zebra cross-
ings, traffic lights etc but all on a miniature scale suitable for children.
Finally, we wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season and all the best for the New
Year. Love Emma, Dawn, Vicki, Robyn and Rachel

THE LIFE CYCLE OF SILK WORMS
What a transformation from the beginning of term 4
when they were just little tiny eggs on cardboard. The
children have loved watching them change and grow.
They have helped with feeding them the leaves from the
Mulberry tree outside. We have had the opportunity to
watch them spinning a cocoon made of silk around them
and finally become little white moths. Now the cycle will
begin again as the moths lay eggs and wait until they
hatch the same time next year.
VEYLF: Outcome 2 Children are connected with and contribute to their world.
This is evident when children
explore relationships with other living and non-living things and observe, notice and respond to change.
show growing appreciation and care for natural and constructed environments
Educators promote this learning, for example, when they:
provide children with access to a range of natural materials in their environment
model respect, care and appreciation for the natural environment
