Challenge

The art of 3-D Visualization and Animation is used to tell a story. In this challenge, we want you to tell us your story. In 15 – 20 seconds, tell us something about you and your teammate that we didn’t know before the challenge. Some examples may be how you met or what you do outside of world of visualization and animation.

The possibilities are endless. But, for this story, you’ll have robot surrogates. Not here to animate, these surrogates are to inspire the storytelling process.

Today’s Challenge will be broken into 2 mini-challenges and the final submission

1. Modeling

2. Lighting and Texturing

3. Overall submission

Challenge 1: Modeling (25% of your overall score)

The modeling challenge is your opportunity to show off your best modeling skills. Here we want you to pick one element of your final production and give it extra attention. Here are some suggestions to the elements to be modeled:

• Your classroom: Of course it doesn’t need to be accurate. Have fun with it. As far as your story is concerned, your classroom now has a steam powered time machine. Due to the time restrictions of the challenge, keep your classroom within the following

• A single-room

• Maximum size 1,000 square feet.

• A mode of transportation: How are you guys getting around?

• An invention: Come up with an invention that will help improve your world. This could be something to address your environment — or just improve your overall world. Or perhaps it’s an invention that’s just for fun.

Challenge 2: Texture and lighting challenge (25% of your overall score)

Textures and lighting can take a mediocre model and make it look great. Here your challenge is to wow the judges with you skills in the art of lights and materials. In this challenge, you will take an object from your project into a photo studio setting and create 3 different themes.

1. Metal

2. Organic

3. Other

By looking at your submissions, we should be able to answer these questions:

Modeling Challenge• What have you modeled?

• What is its purpose?

• What is its scale?

• Did it show off your modeling skills?

Texture and light challenge• Can the judges recognize the 3 different themes?

• Have I properly lit the scene?

• Did I show off my texturing and light skills?

Final Challenge (50% of your score)

Your final assignment will be to produce a 15-20 second animation of your model in action. There are many creative directions you can take with this, but remember you only have eight hours! To stay on track, make sure you are telling a great story. With only 15 seconds, you will really need to focus on good technique.

What your USB drive contains….

• Your robots. Since they are not to be animated, they are not rigged. Available in 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, FBX, 3ds, dwg and image file. You can make these robots a part of your animation, or purely use them for scale and placement. Your goal is to tell the best story possible with your design.

REQUIRED:• General lighting and mood lighting that best shows the design option you chose

• A minimum of three (3) things must animate

• A minimum of one (1) use of “effects”

You may NOT use or include:• Music

Before you begin to model in 3D, you will need to do some research and sketches so that you can tell your story the way you want the audience to see it. These are some steps that may be helpful before you start modeling.

• Make a list of all the objects you need to create your design. Which ones can you find in the kit of parts? What do you have to create yourself?

• Sketch some of the more complex objects and think about how they are made.

• Consider color and lighting for your scene that fits the mood you want to set.

• Think about your final short animation, and make sure your sketches or storyboard reflect your concept.
