DESCRIPTION
TRANSCRIPT
Major problem facing India today is unemployment. 39 million registered unemployed and another 260 million underemployed and unemployed in the age group of 18-50 years.
Also the Skill base of Indian economy is extremely low. Only 2% youth in the age group of 15-29 years receive formal vocational training. The problem will only increase in the coming years
The average age in India by 2020 is expected to be 29 years. We will have to skill and provide employment to this mushrooming young population.
Failure to do so will lead to social turmoil like increased crime and growing youth unrest and extremism
Deep rooted stigma attached with vocational training in India. Vocational Training perceived as a dead end with no existing linkages to the formal higher education system
THE SKILL GAP IN INDIA
Government has set a target to train 500 million by 2020.
Only 2.5 million vocational training seats available whereas 12.8 million youth enter the workforce every year. Only 9000 ITI’s catering to 12 lakh youth
Trades being taught at ITI’s are obsolete and not in touch with industry needs
The formal skill development system does not cater to skill requirement of the unorganised sector where the demand of skills is huge.
The government is encouraging private sector participation in the form of public private partnerships (PPP) but lack of transparency and formal accreditation are effecting quality of training
