Practicing Critical Thinking SkillsCritical thinking comes naturally to young children. They learn autonomy
through exploration, observe their environment using logic and reasoning,
try new things, and think creatively. As children grow and enter an academic
setting, some of their natural curiosity and problem-solving instincts are not
engaged as often as they could be. This practice book encourages children to
“think about their thinking” through creative, analytical, and evaluative tasks.
How to Use This Book

It’s a warm, sunny day. What a good day to play outside. Maybe I’ll go to the playground. Maybe I’ll go to the beach. What would you do?There are playgrounds at schools and playgrounds at parks. It is fun to zoom down a slide or whirl around on a merry-go-round. You can climb on the bars or crawl through tubes. Some playgrounds have swings. Up, up, up you can swing as the wind blows on your face. What fun you can have by yourself. It is even more fun to go to the playground and play with your family or friends.
It is different at the beach. You fill a bucket with water and make things with the sand. You can look at seashells. You can wade in the water with your mom or dad. You can look for little creatures along the shore or watch the sea birds. Sometimes you can see dolphins or seals swimming in the ocean. You can listen to the water and watch the waves roll in. There is a lot of nature to enjoy at the beach. Think about the things you can do at the playground and the beach. Which do you think you would like to do on a warm, sunny day? Imagine the fun you will have.

All About ItRead
Read about giraffes and elephants. Then answer the questions on the following pages.
Giraffes and Elephants
If you look across the yellow grasses of the African savanna, you will see many animals of all shapes, colors, and sizes. However, there are two animals that stand out—one as the largest, the other as the tallest. Can you guess which animals they are?
If you guessed that an elephant is the largest animal on the savanna, you guessed right! An elephant
weighs about 9,900 pounds (4500 kg). A great word to describe it is BIG. If you
guessed that a giraffe is the
tallest animal on the savanna, you’re right again! Standing up to
about 16 feet (500 cm) tall, a giraffe is known for its very
long legs and its long neck, which it uses to reach leaves on high tree branches.
Elephants have a long body part, too—their trunks! They use their trunks to smell and to pick up or touch things. Elephants have gray, leathery skin and ears that look like large fans. They like to be around their family and travel in a herd.
All giraffes are covered in spots and have fur that is shades of cream and brown. They use their long blue-black tongues to reach around thorns and grab tasty leaves. Giraffes form herds when it is time for them to eat or drink.

are designed to engage children
in application, analysis, synthesis,
and evaluation tasks. The cross-
curricular activities present science,
math, social studies, and
language arts content.
Art Projects and Hands-on Activities
The art projects and hands-on activities
provide children with opportunities to use
critical thinking skills to create. Encourage
your child to tap into his or her creativity
and innovation and to have fun with the
hands-on activities. After your child
completes each project, discuss the steps
taken to create it. Encourage your child

Many people like to have cats and dogs as pets. Cats and dogs are alike in many ways. They are mammals. This means they are born alive. The mother feeds her babies with milk from her body. Puppies and kittens cannot see or
do many things when they are born. About two weeks after they are born, they can see and are strong enough to do more things.
Both cats and dogs have four legs and fur or hair. They both have sharp claws and teeth, too.
Dogs have been pets for about 15,000 years. Some dogs are very large. Some are very small. They have smooth tongues and sharp teeth. The teeth help them to eat
their food. Dogs can hear very well. They hear better than people do. Dogs can learn to do many kinds of work to help people.
Cats have been pets for thousands of years, too. Cats use their sharp teeth to hold their
food. They use their rough tongues to clean their fur. A cat’s long tail helps it to keep its balance. Cats meow, purr, and hiss to show how they feel.
If you have a pet dog or cat, then you know that you must take care of it. Pets need a safe, warm place to sleep. They need good food and water. They need to spend time with you. Dogs and cats make wonderful pet friends.
