Kris’ Kolumn

El Nino! El Nino! EL NINO !! THE SNOW IS COMING !!

I work in Climate Change and each week someone says this

El Nino is BIG. This week, they said December thru February

might have lots of snow with La Nina following in April.

A-Basin, usually first open, has 18 inches and one lift running. Aspen is below freezing every night and has scored

6 inches. Mammoth Mountain is opening Veterans’ Day.

What’s not to like!

Yours truly was very happy to represent Your Club in the LA Council Man-of-the-Year

competition. But, happier to be runner-up in the Gala Masquerade costume contest. As Zorro, my satin mask scared the many phantoms, or was it the black hat and red and

black, floor-length cape? Unfortunately, I ran out of showmanship when it counted

most. Rest assured the 100 partiers (each with a mask!) had a whole lot of fun!

From the pictures in this newsletter, you might think that Your Club has quite a number

of eligible ladies. And, you’d be right! Of course, not all these fetching lasses are available…. ;)

Moving ahead, Shep is telling us to RSVP at our favorite Aspen diner – NOW!

Lance set up another wonderful wine tasting (see the calendar!) and a very interesting

Holiday (X-Mas?) Dinner Party on December 5th. Roberto writes about art, as his Trojans suffered in South Bend. Sarah is having a great time in Eastern Europe –

photos in the next issue. Ken continues to remind us that we (me, too!) need to be in

shape to ski. Please check out Cynthia’s Calendar towards the end of this Breeze.

Sarah Sez … By Sarah Pool

I’m Long Gone… Trippin’ in Eastern Europe….Budapest to Buckarest Well, this month, I’ll be gone….in fact, I’ll be long gone…. Depending on the country, I’ll be spending different currencies over the course of a few weeks.

A Viking River Cruise on the Danube River in Eastern Europe takes you to five different countries, and they each have their own currency. It is like in the olden days in Europe before the European Union and the Euro currency arrived.

Hungary uses the forint, Croatia uses the Kuna, Serbia uses the Serbian Dinar, Bulgaria uses the Lev, Romania uses the Romanian Leu, and the Czech Republic uses the Koruna. Wish me luck in converting to each currency and keeping track of what things cost. It should be a real challenge! I’ll be happy to spend some extra time in Prague after the cruise and then in Vienna, Austria so I’ll be able to spend some Euros for a change. Now, there’s a conversion I can easily make! Right now, the dollar is strong with an exchange rate of 1 Euro = $1.14. That’s good news for me! Ciao and Cheers!

College Football and Art!! By Roberto Tovar

While waiting for the ski season to begin, I traveled to Chicago, the weekend of October 17th. I met a club member there named Lou Alvarado, who was also there on business. Our intention was to travel from Chicago to South Bend, Indiana and see the USC vs Notre Dame football game. Here we are posing in front of ‘Touch Down Jesus’!

While in Chicago, I took in the USC pep rally on the Navy Pier. It was great seeing so many other alumni there in all our glory of crimson and gold!

Page 15: SKI BREEZE NOVEMBER 2015 volume 77, issue 5 BREEZE-Nov2015v5.0.pdfthe Aspen Week Ski trip is nearly sold out between the four different ski clubs in our LA Council group which are

We then wandered over to the Chicago Institute of Art. I saw wonderful French Impressionists including a special exhibition of Edgar Degas who was famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term,

preferring to be called a ‘realist’. There were also works by 20th century American and American Regionalist artists. One of the great museums of the world!

We had booked a room in La Porte, Indiana, since it was an evening game, local time. It was very cold that night and the game did not go as I'd hoped … the Fighting Irish defeated my Trojans by a score of 41 to 31. We’ll beat them next year! We saw the famous Chicago "Bean" in Centennial Park

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl

This past Saturday, October 14th, we held our annual open house at my yacht club,

The Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Gallagher who is a well-known chiropractor from Belmont

Shore, gave a 20 minute presentation. Dr. Gallagher covered several areas addressing how we can prepare for the upcoming

snow season. He discussed the

importance of regular exercise which included stretching, working out with

light weights, spinning classes, balancing exercises and yoga for strengthening our

core (means our belly). He also discussed nutrition and felt juicing with dark fruits

and dark vegetables was his

recommendation. He really thought energy bars and drinks were NOT the

best form of nutrition.

Our Prez, Kris was in his glory promoting our

silent auction items and our raffle stuff. He should be working at a carnival during his

spare time! We had over 25 attendees and

the evening was very upbeat. The club bar provided the booze at ridiculously low prices.

No wonder boaters are drunks!

Saturday, November 14th we will have wine

tasting at Bistro St. Germaine located in Seal Beach. Watch for flyer for details.

On Saturday, December 5th, we will have our annual Xmas dinner party. This year we

will be doing something special for the dinner itself so you won’t want to miss this event! The location will be announced this month in a special Xmas flyer. And as you

can see this club is alive and well!

It’s not that expensive to renew and

you get a lot of great deals being a member…. So join up soon!

Ken’s Komments by Ken Gregg

Now would be an excellent time to start thinking about & doing things to help prepare for

the upcoming ski season. Speaking of which, this season has all the makings of an epic one!

With the current El Nino continuing to be one of the strongest ever, it bodes well for heavier

than normal rain fall, which will hopefully in turn, translate into massive snow falls in the

Sierras. So as I mentioned last month, please keep doing your snow dances and offering an

occasional prayer or toasting an adult beverage to the snow gods. It can only help!!

1. Physical conditioning – Hopefully you have been taking advantage of our excellent SoCal weather to get out and work on your conditioning. For those of you who are struggling with finding time to work on you conditioning, I’d like to offer a couple of suggestions that have been passed onto me. First, while you are brushing your teeth, don’t just admire yourself in the mirror, do 10-12 deep knee bends each time. Secondly, a couple of times a day, drop 10 paper clips on the floor and bend/stretch to pick them up one at a time. And thirdly, whenever possible, take the stairs rather than the elevator (at least for a couple of floors). Even these simple actions will help get you ready and hopefully will stimulate you to come upon with some other actions. So get going and just do it!!!

2. Equipment – Now would be an excellent time start thinking about your equipment for this upcoming season. Take a good hard look at your boots, skis and bindings. For those of you who don’t do your own ski maintenance, this is a good time of the year to keep an eye open for early season sales & maintenance offers. Also take a good hard look at your secondary equipment (such as goggles, helmet, poles, etc.) and your clothing to see if anything needs to be repaired, replaced or cleaned.

3. Participation – Please plan to join us for our next monthly General Membership Meetings to find out more details about the upcoming season’s weekend ski trips to Mammoth, the week trip to Aspen & social events are being planned.

The next general meeting will be held, as usual, on the 1st Wednesday of the month, which means October 7th @ Ecco’s Pizza in Long Beach. The pizza is free and so is the comradery. Ken
