Kris’ Kolumn

‘Young and Old …Fun and Bold …

We plot our social calendars!’

For the young or bold at heart, there is still skiing at Mammoth. Until July 4th or if your

skis have had enough, whichever comes first! And I want a full (or short) description of your escapade for Our Club’s web pages! Many thanks to more than 60 who have

renewed membership in Our Club since May’s wonderful Dinner-Dance. Have YOU renewed, yet?

This year, like years gone by, winter is lingering into summer. It may possibly be a long

hot summer. Regardless of the length and intensity of the golden rays, these precious warm days will be too darned few for that Bucket List!

As a compromise, one could take this summer to concentrate on just two or three

things… maybe, concerts in the park (look for Gary & Yvonne or Alan & Kathy), or

afternoons in museums (if not at work) or a brief workout in the morning (that’s me).

We can certainly discuss the pros and cons, like air conditioning in museums or theatres, combining a concert in the park with a picnic and light exercise. Yes, yes,

those family occasions are already assumed to be an integral part of getting up in the morning!

Page 2: SKI BREEZE JULY 2016 volume 78, issue 1 · Ocean Blvd at Granada Ave. July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 at El Dorado Park West Belmont Shore, free parking Willow St. and Studebaker Rd. Movies

Within a few years, the climate change will start to make the outdoor activities a wee bit arduous as we grab the occasional respite from the indoors. Taking real time to

relax in the coolness of the late morning, afternoon, and evening will start to take on a

real importance. When was the last time we went to the Laugh Factory – now that is letting go!

Or, we can suggest substitutions like reading or surfing at the (air conditioned) library, water sports (from surfing to sailing to sun bathing to snorkeling) or camping / B&B’ing

(beach, mountains, or desert) or a trip overseas, or one of my favorites this summer; home improvements. You know, mundane things, like painting, wiring, and re-

plumbing the whole house… sigh. Yup, after looking at a few of the possibilities,

summer seems way too short!

If that exhausts me, it might also exhaust you. So, one way that the LA Council (of Ski

Clubs) is helping, is rounding up a somewhat comprehensive list of activities that the various ski clubs are doing this year – this summer and longer. Remember all those

fun-loving people on the slopes and in the ski lodge? Well, they are all fun-loving

people during the rest of the year too! Just like you and me. And they’d love to celebrate the summer doing fun stuff…. More on our web pages with links as they

come out!

Slowly, but surely, we are adding bits and pieces of info to our website and getting

many more hits! And we are getting a lot more activity on our Meetup page too. So, if you see new faces, it’s likely that we are drawing out a few more fun-loving people

with similar interests. Don’t be surprised if you find another good buddy to chum with

on the slopes, at the store, on the phone, or at our club events.

Our club’s most recent monthly wine tasting at the Wine Crush attracted “only” about

30 people, including Libby (wonderful to see that smile on the patio), Bob who had surgery to reconnect a key tendon above his knee, the new Craig (with a new knee),

Farah (a new smile with new excitement), and Sarah’s cadre. This bunch included Sarah’s boyfriend, Rene’, an old nursing colleague of Jodi’s and her husband … my

guess is that we’ll see more of them!

At this austere event, it should be noted that discussion did occasionally touch on our upcoming week trip to either Big White or Big Sky. Naturally, I asked people to make

their preferences known to Shep, who would love to hear from anyone and everyone!

Lance, and Craig, and Ziba, and Sarah, and Roberto, and Shep (and Tara), and Cynthia, and Dana, and Brian must all have been doing something right during the past year or

two! It seems that Jodi, and Letty, and Lou, will help to continue this legacy…. with Your Ski Bum President!

Cheers!

Kris

P.S. If none of my suggestions work, please see Roberto's column for a truly

authoritative perspective for what to do. :)

July 2016 LBSC Ski Club Trip Report By Bob & Tara Shepard

We are still looking at two different Ski Resorts for the 2017 Week Ski. We are hoping

to get the cost on these two resorts soon. However, we now need all of the Long

Beach Ski Club members to select which Ski Resort you would prefer to sign-up for.

Hopefully, the trip will be scheduled for the first week of February for the 2017 Week

Ski Trip. Go to both their websites attached below for more information.

Choices are as follows:

BIG SKY, Montana Big White, Canada

http://bigskyresort.com/ http://www.bigwhite.com/geo/ca/

Email your selection now to Shep at: [email protected]

Hope you all will be at the July 6th LBSC General Meeting, at Ecco’s in Los Altos on

Bellflower at 7:00pm, for a little Pizza and if you are lucky…. a bottle of wine!

Craig’s Crag …

By Craig Gibson

There is one word that comes to mind when I think of next season’s race schedule …

cockamamie! This schedule does not make sense. I have implored the powers that be

to reconsider this schedule and as of yet, I have not received a response.

It used to be that ULLR 1 would bookend Ski, Ride and Race Week. That will not happen

this year. This year ULLR 1 will be separated from the Ski Week by 9 days. Cockamamie!

As your humble envoy into the realm of beer league ski racing, I entreat you to heed

the metaphoric phrase “Don’t shoot the messenger.”

Ladies and gentlemen here is our race schedule for next year:

11/30-12/2 ROKKA Camp GS

12/2 ROKKA clinic GS in the afternoon

12/3 ULLR 1 GS

12/12-12/16 Ski, Ride and Race Week

1/4-1/6 ROKKA Camp Slalom

1/6 ROKKA clinic Slalom

1/7 ULLR 2 Slalom

2/17 ROKKA clinic GS

2/18 ULLR 3 GS

3/10 ROKKA clinics (GS and slalom?)

3/11-3/12 S. California Championships (GS and Slalom)

3/31-4/2 Far West Finals hosted by Mammoth (GS and Slalom)

Cockamamie! I love that word, however, I hate using it in this context.

Get Loose with Lance By Lance

On Saturday

July 23rd, we

will be having

a barbecue at

the Maloney

residence.

The club will

provide

chilled

watermelon

and roasted

sweet corn.

Then on Saturday, August 13th, we will have our final summer barbecue at Dave Lopez

residence. We refer to this annual event as The Casa Lopez Barbecue. Again, the club

will provide chilled watermelon and roasted sweet corn.

In mid-September we will have wine tasting at Bistro Saint Germaine, everyone's

favorite spot for wine tasting.

Flyers will be blasted ahead of time for these scheduled events.

LOS ANGELES COUNCIL OF SKI CLUBS …

Below are three flyers from the LA Council of Ski Clubs (LAC). These are for all ski club

clubs, like LBSC, who are club members of LAC, meaning you… all LBSC members.

LAC is reaching out to clubs and has some new ideas for building a more cohesive ski

community.

Look out for future notices coming your way!

Meanwhile, attached below are the flyers for those interested in finding out more!

1) Far West Ski Association Annual Ski Trip. This year to Breckenridge.

This year from January 28 – February 4th. Note, this is not the LBSC annual ski

trip targeted for February 2017.

2) Ralph’s Rewards Community Program – The UnRecables Ski Club is

asking for your help in supporting sports and recreational needs for the disabled.

It’s an easy one time sign up with a bar scan code and you support their cause

whenever shopping at Ralph’s for your groceries. How easy is that??

3) Hold the Date for LAC’s Annual Snow Gala – To be held at the

Embassy Suites near LAX on October 22nd. More details to come!
