At its origin, between 1995 and 2005, Street Art has generated different web communities.

It was more about sharing photos and documenting a new urban practice, than selling artworks.

The most important websites were created by one person or by a couple. They were amateurs, dealing with their passion and overwhelmed by an unexpected success.

Fotolog, one of the first social networks, was the exception. Highly used by street artists, it allowed both to publish digital photos and to follow and being followed by your own community.

During 2000s, a new kind of websites has arisen, thanks to the interest of editorial teams into Street Art. The USA magazine Juxtapoz (USA), followed by Graffiti Art Magazine (FR), Very Nearly Almost (GB) and Street Art News (GB) started to produce and sell artworks of artists that they were promoting. This scheme seems to be the best one to preserve editorial independence and freedom of speech.

Street Art website are no more the result of the passion of an anonymous person. They are more the fruit of the work of editorial teams, publishing both on the web and on paper.

Since 2010, Street Art has been more and more linked with social networks.Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and now Instagram are now influencing street artists’ relation with their public.Street Art is now more than ever a consumption of digital images to thumb up. This explains the newly influence of codes coming from graphic design and illustration, which allows artists to produce messages calibrated on the attention of viewers (2/3 seconds). Neo-muralism is part of this “WOW scheme”. Impressive seems to be the new trend.
