I love observing people’s lives, especially those different from my own. I think it is both the geographic distance and cultural difference that elevate my curiosity. When I relocated into a Western culture, the geographic migration brought me new insight into the cultural milieu of my native East. My work tells stories, personal experiences, and my renewed connection to my cultural tradition and Eastern origin. The transformations in my own life and in Chinese culture are new inspirations for my creative expression.

The dialogues between past and present, East and West, nature and culture are recurring themes in my work. The boundaries between these themes might be clear or blurred as they appear in the real world. My memories, reflections, and contemplations are interpreted into visual languages of image, layering, light, and shadow, and then applied on fabric and in space.

I attend to the interplay of textile with space and invite audiences to participate in their interaction. Surface images are often loaded with cultural interpretations. They allude to tradition yet dissolve into modernist aesthetic expression. Layering not only refers to the explicit overlapping of material and imagery, but also implies a juxtaposition of times, cultures, and aesthetics.

An evolving hybrid-making process, which blends digital and manual skills and integrates traditional techniques with new innovations, comes naturally to my work; it fits into my transcultural perspective and position. This show features visual explorations of changing urban landscape in art installations, which reflect issues, causes, and happenings of changing urban landscapes. They suggest fragility, vulnerability, and sustainability concerns of human constructed environments and their dependence and impact on nature. The installations highlight fiber/textile’s interplay with space, mixed media approach, and artwork’s social focus and engagement.

Gualala Arts Lecture Series

In her talk, April Dammann will reveal how Earl Stendahl, a preeminent twentieth century dealer, made a lasting impression on the California art scene. She draws material from her recently published book, Exhibitionist: Earl Stendahl, Art Dealer as Impresario.

You will get insight into a Los Angeles life peopled with celebrities and rocked by scandals. Learn how Stendahl helped his neighbor, Walter Arensberg, amass what one art historian called “the most discriminating single group of twentieth century paintings and sculpture in existence.”

The Arensbergs were also among the gallery’s earliest clients of Pre-Columbian art from Mexico, Central and South America. This ethnographic material has become an important part of the Stendahl legacy and complements the gallery’s collection of impressionists and modern artists.

One example of Stendahl’s influence is the 1939 exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to benefit

Spanish refugees from the Spanish Civil War. One of only two non-museum showings in the U.S. of this iconic work illustrates Stendahl’s efforts to expose the public to fine art.

This story is also a personal one; Dammann married Stendahl’s grandson and the family has carried on the business tradition after Stendahl died in 1966. Her husband, Ron, is currently president of Stendahl Galleries, which celebrated one hundred years of continuous operation in Los Angeles in 2011. Learn more online at www.stendahlgalleries.com.

Earl Stendahl’s daughter, Eleanor Stendahl Dammann Howell, lived in Gualala for many years and was a generous supporter of Gualala Arts. The Howell Conference Room is named for her and her husband, Tom.

Dammann lives part-time north of Anchor Bay.

Copies of her book will also be available.

This lecture is sponsored by the Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild, affectionately known as PPQG.

Take a campus tour of the famous Chicago School of Fusing. This mythological university is devoted to the promotion of the fine art of fusing, a non-traditional method of assembling quilts with fusible web. Laura Wasilowski, Dean of Corrections at the School, guides you around the campus buildings, introduces you to the fascinating fusing curriculum, and shows you the

exciting campus life of the student fuser. Included in the presentation is a review of the fusing processes, a display of actual fused art quilts, and Laura’s own rendition of the Chicago School of Fusing fight song. Press on! A trunk show of hand dyed fabrics and threads from the Artfabrik dyers will be included in the program. Coffee and cookies will be served.

For more info contact Kalynn Oleson by phone, 884-1448, or by email, [email protected].

We’ve Doubled Our Efforts And Need Some Help

With Sketches now issued monthly, our volunteer Sketches team has to double its efforts. We could use some help in a couple of ways:

• First, volunteers are always welcome to meet once a month for about two hours to get Sketches ready to hit the mailboxes.

• The Team is also in need of replacing our well used electric staplers. If you have one in good working order and would like to move it on to the greater good it would certainly be appreciated.

Contact Susan at the Arts Center to discuss joining the team. If you’d like us to be the new home for your stapler just drop it by the Arts Center or give Susan a call (884-1138) to make arrangements for a pick-up.

A Message from our Executive Director

David ‘Sus’ SusallaExecutive DirectorGualala Arts, Inc.

Congratulations to the hundreds of artists who participated in Art in the Redwoods this year! I heard lots of “best year yet” and “the quality of art is even better this year” and “so many diverse techniques and materials.” We were blessed by thorough and thoughtful judges, April and Ron Dammann, who made some fine and difficult choices with over 300 entries in 16 categories.

I am proud to have so many first time exhibitors involved this year as well! It really warms my heart and soul to know that we are encouraging and fostering so much creative enthusiasm in our community. Not to mention the “red dot” awards bestowed by our visitors through their purchases.

We welcomed some new ideas this year like the “Community Lane” which featured and highlighted some of our community gems with services groups, activities and businesses. We dedicated the Global Harmony Sculpture Garden, which includes the first Haiku Path in the United States.

Opening the festival, our Top Hat dinner was a smashing success. We had 130 guests enjoying fine wines and delightful food lovingly prepared and donated by our very own Rosemary Campiformio, Executive Chef of St. Orres.

Speaking of donors, we are very grateful for our generous sponsors of the Festival this year. We are listing all of our sponsors and winning artists in this issue of Sketches so you can see how much support this festival is getting through our entire community.

Gualala Arts is starting to seek support from individuals and regional businesses for specific arts programs. This funding would complement the very generous cash and in-kind donations from local people and local businesses. It would also focus a spotlight on business partners who realize the benefits of having a healthy arts community. We hope you will choose to patronize businesses who support your local artists and art venues.

If you have suggestions or connections with an individual or business that you feel would be a good match for Art in the Redwoods, Whale & Jazz Festival, Chamber Music, Local Eyes, Global Harmony Series, or any of our programming, please let me know. We will welcome them into our family of sponsors. By strengthening this area of support, we hope to reduce the number of fundraising pleas to our local community. This will free us all to focus on THE ARTS!

YOU make a difference with every choice.

Thank you for choosing to make Art in the Redwoods such a success this year!

52 years in the making…
