    SKETCHBOOK: KNOWING YOUR PENCILSCreate a 2-page spread in your sketchbook that communicates the many different

    ways of using pencil to show texture, value, and form. Reference the Apply Pencil to Paperand Knowing Your Pencils handouts and pay extra-close attention to values, shapes, andedges as you draw five objects that showcase the following textures:

    1. Fuzzy/furry (try using the side of the pencil with quick strokes for soft effects)2. Rough/bumpy (dull the point of a soft pencil for bold marks & textural blending)3. Shiny (try soft blending with high contrast values and a variety of graphite weights)4. Burlap/woven (textural blending combined with well-defined areas of detail)5. Wood (Create a sense of overall form, then add areas of light/dark grain with

    smooth/textural blending)

    RATINGS: 0=Not at all 1=Barely 2=Sort of 3=Mostly 4=Definitely

    Criteria: Student Teacher

    1. Drew 5 drawings from observation of objects (drawn about the

    size of your hand or larger) that show the 5 textures listed above

    2. Created a sense of three-dimensional form for each object witha range of values that communicate light and shadow

    3. Showed mastery with different applications of pencil thatcommunicate variety in texture, tonal value, and contrast

    4. Included an artful title, hand-lettered headings and/or labels, and

    other decorative drawings/details to embellish your spread

    5. Arranged the various elements of the 2-page spread in a strongcomposition that uses the space well and is visually interesting

    6. Wrote 8+ sentences using art appropriate language that explainhow you achieved each specific texture/technique in pencil

    7. Carefully crafted the two-page spread, avoiding smudges,wrinkles/dog-eared pages, or sloppy pencil work
