InvestmentProposition
The economic landscape in Dubai for the year 2013 reflected positive cues,
with GDP growth estimated at 4.7% according to the Dubais Department
of Economic Development (DED). This robust growth was mainly driven
by the strong performance of sectors such as hospitality and real estate.
AVIATION
Dubai International Airport rose on a global scale, becoming the worlds
second-busiest international hub. The highlights of the year included:
- Annual passenger traffic reaching 66.5 million
- The successful opening of Concourse A, the worlds largest and only
facility purpose-built for the Airbus A380
- The launch of passenger services at Al Maktoum International at Dubai
World Central and a record-breaking airshow that featured aircraft
orders exceeding USD 200 billion - the bulk of which was placed
by Dubais flag carriers
- Emirates Airline placing its largest aircraft order yet - for 150 Boeing 777X
and 50 Airbus A380 aircrafts, together worth USD 99 billion
TOURISM
Inbound traffic to Dubai grew by 11% in 2013 and this positive trend
in tourism is expected to continue in coming years due to Dubais increasingglobal popularity as a destination backed by the Governments pro-tourism
initiatives. Dubais hotels welcomed more than 11 million guests in 2013
- an increase of over one million on the 2012 numbers and a positive
indication that Dubai is on the way to achieving its target of welcoming
20 million visitors a year by 2020. Occupancy rates for citywide hotels
increased from 78% to 80%, while the occupancy rate for hotel apartments
was 82%.
EXPO 2020
Being named the host for EXPO 2020 is expected to boost the Dubai
economy, which is projected to have an annual average growth of 6.4%
over the next three years. By the year 2020, the city is expected
to welcome 20 million visitors per year, tripling the annual contribution
made by tourism to the citys economy.
INVENTORY
The number of hotel rooms and apartments at the end of 2013 amountedto a total of 84,534 across 611 establishments. In order to accommodate
the target numbers for 2020, Dubai will need a total of 160,000 rooms.
INCENTIVES
In September 2013, Dubai Government announced an initiative
to incentivise hotel owners and fast-track construction of 4 star hotels.
Under this initiative, eligible developments are granted a concession
on the standard 10% Municipality Fee which is levied on the room rate
for each night of occupancy.
