Priest-in-Charge’s Letter

God Save the Queen! Early June sees the 60th anniversary of our Queen’s reign: all over the country and Commonwealth there will be parties and celebrations in honour of Her Majesty and our villages will be no exception! The second week of June will no doubt see lots of people recovering from a surfeit of hot dogs and jelly and ice cream, among other things! As a nation we will have the opportunity to give thanks for a remarkable woman: someone who has responded to her calling to public service with ceaseless commitment and unfailing devotion. Governments and Prime Ministers come and go and , Heads of State and others from all over the globe have over these years come to recognise her outstanding contribution not only to the nation and Commonwealth but far beyond to the wider world. Her Majesty’s embracing of her duty of service springs directly from her Christian faith, and is constantly renewed by it, as our Bishop reminded us when, with the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cambridge, Her Majesty recently visited our cathedral at the start of her Jubilee Tour. Many of us will remember that occasion, when people of all generations and from every ethnic background came together in Leicester to greet her and to welcome her. It was a deeply moving experience, which I shall long remember and cherish. The “royal servant” is a theme at the heart of the Christian experience. Jesus, the Son of David, declared he had come not to be served but to serve, he lays aside his garments and washes the feet of his friends as their servant and the crown he wears is a crown of thorns. One of the earliest Christian hymns, found in Philippians 2, sings of Jesus who took the form of a servant and who humbled himself, even to death on a Cross. Such an expression of kingship was then and still is profoundly counter-cultural, in keeping with the whole ministry of Jesus in word and work which challenged and continues to challenge the values of society around power and status and prestige. In all our Sunday worship on 3rd June there will be Prayers of Thanksgiving for Her Majesty and especially for her dedication to service, as we gather in response, as we do each week, to the invitation of Christ, the Servant King. You are welcome to share in that opportunity to celebrate with us.

FORTHCOMING SPECIAL SERVICES AT SOUTH KILWORTH This year, the Benefice Eucharist Service in June will be held in our church instead of in October as in previous years.

St. Nicholas’ South Kilworth will be welcoming the choir of St. Anne’s, Leicester (the previous parish of Canon Chris Oxley) for a Choral Evensong according to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer on Sunday 19 August at 6 pm. On that day we would hope that people from across the benefice and beyond will come to share in this very special event.

WASOSK’S REPORT FOR APRIL 20TH 2012 Hosted by Paul Atkin 12 good men and true spent a very enjoyable evening and were very ably entertained with some very fine “nibbles” by Paul. The evening was spent by discussing a wide range of village issues and all readers can be reassured that the WASoSKs have come up with a range of solutions for the problems that we encounter on a day to day basis. While performing this estimable community action we were also lucky enough to taste a few new offerings to the society’s library Glenburgie 10yr old: The classic vanilla and smoky oak was complimented with hints of spice and hay on the nose. This was followed with a gentle sweet sherry entry leading to a fennel finish AnCnoc 12 yr old: A hint of saddle soap married to a lemon zesty nose led to an initial crisp pepperiness on the taste. This was followed by a waxy fullness with lingering pine-needle freshness at the end. Both of these whiskies were much enjoyed and I’m sure would grace any drinks cabinet. Unfortunately we now have to source further supplies. Despite all the good work that was undertaken during the evening it will perhaps be best remembered for some very Shameful behavior. However, a decision has been taken by society members that individual names should not be mentioned because of the subsequent consequences that a mention in dispatches may cause.

The next meeting is on Friday 1st June at David Hinchley’s with the planned “twinning” meeting expected at the end of July FOOTBALL GOALS (9v9) The goals have been turned so that the goal area and penalty spots can be reseeded and turfed so that the pitches are fit to play when the season restarts at the end of August. Maggy Roberts COLIN MCALPINE I would like to thank all who attended Colin’s funeral on 8th May 2012. I would especially like to thank Gail of The Pink Peony at Catthorpe who did the floral tributes, all of which were so beautiful. In total £100 was kindly donated in memory of Colin and I would like to thank those people who donated. The money has been sent to The Labrador Lifeline Trust who are a small charity who helped me in finding Meg a new home. MEG Many people have asked me what has happened to Meg and where she has gone, so I wanted to update that after being fostered by someone for a couple of weeks whilst a permanent home was being sought, she is now living with an active elderly gentleman in the South of England He had recently lost his old Labrador and wanted an older dog, so it was a perfect match for him and Meg! The Labrador Lifeline Trust helped me enormously in finding her a home and they will always keep in touch with her new owner and know how she is. I took her down to Oxfordshire where she was then taken on to her new home by a member of the Trust and although it was sad to watch her being driven off I was pleased that she had found a wonderful new home. I have since been updated a couple of times to tell me that she is fine and enjoying her new life and have had some photos emailed to me of her sitting on the settee and looking totally settled and content and very much at home! A very happy ending for Meg and I am sure that Colin, who was so devoted to her, would have been very happy to know she is being loved and ell cared for in her twilight years, Philippa Welford Road PARISH CLERK VACANCY Suzanne Taylor, after 10 years hard work as Clerk of South Kilworth Parish Council, has decided it is time to seek a new challenge. Accordingly the Parish Council is now seeking applications for the position of Parish Clerk. This is a part time role based at home with flexible hours of up to approximately 15 hours a month. LUNCHEON CLUB On Thursday 17th May, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Luncheon Club, 21 participants gathered together at Kilworth Springs for an enjoyable occasion. This was highlighted with animated conversation and reminiscent accounts of the Clubs foundation. The main course of steak pie served with carrots and peas was followed by a very tasty fruit mousse. Coffee and mints or tea rounded off a very pleasant lunch. A gift of chocolates to thank the very kind ladies who organise and provide the luncheons was, true to their generosity, promptly shared with all of us. Rita Hallam thanked all the helpers who have voluntarily given up their time to keep the Club going. A photo album of the 20th anniversary was passed around and Rita Byrne organised a photo shoot of the 25th anniversary. It was a pleasure to see Judith Smith - the person responsible for the foundation of the Luncheon Club 25 years ago. Her true nursing and caring skills are still being utilised in her present association with LOROS. This was a very happy and fitting celebration of the Luncheon Clubs 25 years. The next meeting is on Thursday 14th June at the Village Hall. David Burd FAREWELL TO WALNUT TREE COTTAGES I don’t own a laptop, so I don’t go on Facebook and I don’t tweet! But through the SK News I would like to express a thought or two about my time here. My six happy years in this beautiful village have come to an end and I am moving on but I couldn’t leave without saying what a pleasure and a privilege it has been to live in this thriving, caring community. This rural gem is very special and quite rare. The flora and fauna to be found here is outstanding in richness and variety. Daily walks with my springer spaniel Purdey, have never failed to lift my spirits. Come rain or shine there is always something interesting to see or hear. Beautiful sunrises over the railway line towards Welford. Noisy geese returning to the reservoir after night feeding in the fields. Swans overhead with the unmistakable and magical whirring of their wings. The regular “thump thump” of an old lister engine as a narrowboat winds its way along the Grand Union Canal. Bluebells carpeting the slopes in the woods at nearby Hemploe, and the glorious poppy fields which appeared after the dry spring last year. I have seen mad march hares chasing each other round and round in circles, oblivious to everything and everyone! The haunting sound of cattle lowing on a foggy morning – like a fog horn out at sea. How wonderful to see the cows with their calves as nature intended, and big Daddy not far away! Birdsong, so many birds to see. I was thrilled to see a kingfisher down by the bridge recently. Church bells calling villagers to worship as they have done for hundreds of years. May they never fall silent! Through the night, the comforting chimes of the clock. I always count them and sometimes they are wrong, especially when it is time for winding! From the cottage you can hear the woodpeckers in the trees at the Timbered House. Silly squirrels who have forgotten where they buried their nuts – again! On a balmy evening you can hear bats scratching restlessly in the eaves as they queue up to emerge into the night air in search of supper. Collared doves made a flimsy nest out of the bracket of the Sky dish and reared two broods last year. On a winter’s evening you can hear owls screeching and hooting. Three types live close by – Tawny, Barn and Little Owl.

Tractors thunder past as farmers go about their daily business. Combine harvesters work late into the night to bring the harvest home. The school bell, a real one, heralds beginning and end of the learning day. Finally, the walnut tree itself, standing guard over the village as one has for many many years The walnut has a hard shell to protect the delicate inside, a bit like us really, keeping one another safe. This little piece of England is indeed a joy to behold. Judith Pastuch

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS Things have certainly gone a little quiet at the reservoir in the last 2-3 weeks with the wet April taking its toll on certain species. The short eared owl (mentioned in the last edition) hung around until early May but there have been no recent sightings. Many of the common migrants have now returned including whitethroat, reed warbler, sedge warbler, garden warbler and swift. I was fortunate enough in early May to have some excellent views of a cuckoo along the Leicestershire bank – definitely more often heard than seen.

The cuckoo is a dove-sized bird with blue grey upper parts, head and chest with dark barred white under parts. With their sleek body, long tail and pointed wings they are not unlike kestrels or sparrowhawks. They are summer visitors and well-known brood parasites, the females laying their eggs in the nests of other birds, especially meadow pipits, dunnocks and reed warblers. The two oystercatchers continue to linger and have spent some time in the field adjacent to the reservoir. One of the birds would appear to be sitting on a nest on the floating tern raft so a good chance that there will be young oystercatchers before too long.

The spotted flycatcher has returned to the garden / trees along North Road for another year and will hopefully breed again. I have also heard of at least two others in the village. Chris Hubbard

8.0 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT I am happy to report that 2011/2012 has been another year of progress for South Kilworth. In addition to the general tasks involved with the day to day running of our village we have seen progress across a number of initiatives that we hope will all add to the quality of life for all parishioners. We have completed the addition of timers so that street lights can be switched off at night, and whilst there were one or two initial concerns about this initiative we feel certain that the reduction in light pollution and the saving in electricity make environmental as well as economic sense. The dog bins installed last year are being well used, although we have more work to do to ensure all dog walkers 'bag it and bin it' as dog mess is such a blight on village footpaths. The new allotments are now established and are proving a huge success, so well done again to those involved. Having completed phase one of the playground upgrade we have had some minor improvements to attend to this year, and the Agar Venture are currently finalising the plans for Phase Two of the upgrade aimed at slightly older children – again, thanks to all those involved. The development of the old phone box into a ‘village library’ is complete, pending the official opening – special thanks to Steve Agar for his efforts and enthusiasm for this project.


One important activity this year has been working with the other surrounding parishes to determine a fair way of allocating the funds available as a result of the wind farm, and I’d like to thank Ernie Roberts in particular for the lead role he has taken in the many meetings on this topic. This is important, and whilst we still have significant work to do before we actually see any financial benefit, if we can manage the process effectively it will significantly impact the budget we have for improving our village. An aspect of this process we need to improve is a demonstrable engagement with the parishioners to determine how we should spend the available funds once they become available – and in this regard we need your help! Over the coming months we will be looking for your input to the ideas we might have, and in fact we really want to hear your ideas for how we should be spending money to improve village life in South Kilworth. We are currently seeking quotations for refurbishing the benches and bus shelters in the village, and we really want to maximise the usefulness of the village website - so if you have any thoughts on these or other initiatives that you think would improve village life then please don't hesitate to get in touch. Importantly we will continue manage the budget tightly and this will remain a priority for the next year. If anyone has any points or ideas they would like to raise with the Parish Council we would love to hear from you - the more you talk to us the more we can make sure that we are working on your behalf.

9.0 ACCOUNTS / FINANCE MATTERS All accounts for the year have been finalised and will be available to be viewed by the public from the 16th June 2012. The notice will be on the notice board with the contact address and number.

The 2010/11 audit was completed and sent to Clement Keys on time this year, with all relevant

paperwork attached. 10.0 HIGHWAYS

ER to deal with all highway issues All carriageways are in good condition apart from the Walcote road edges which will be pulled back in the next few weeks and Dog Lane which is to have pot hole filled and levelled in areas in the near future. This has already been marked out to be done.

11.0 RECREATION PA and ST (due to the Agar Venture) will continue to look after any recreational issues The Parish Council have identified that the last amenity that should be required must be something for the 12-16 year olds in the village. It is a priority to complete the playground in 12/13.

12.0 STREET LIGHTING

RD will continue to look after the street lights RD to look at the remaining street lights that have not been refurbished or repaired and report back with the decision on the next few lights that are to be repaired in 12//13

13.0 SCHOOL JW will report back from the school The minutes for school are missing and we can add as an addendum once they are approved.

14.0 BROADBAND/CONNECTIVITY


JW will continue to work with the broadband Broadband is being delivered to parts of Leicestershire and villages that border Northamptonshire during 2013, 2014. South Kilworth falls under the jurisdiction of Northants County Council because we use Welford Exchange. Northants County Council have written a plan to set out their first view of the order in which villages will receive broadband and later in 2012 will identify the supplier that will provide that broadband supply to the local exchanges. South Kilworth Parish Council worked with Northants County Council to influence the timing of the upgrade of the Welford exchange and to that end a survey took place in March 2012 around the village. The results are not yet known however Northants County Council is currently reviewing its plans that will be implemented in the remainder of 2012 and into 2013.

15.0 WINDFARM ER will continue to work with the windfarm As part of the approval for the Swinford windfarm, developers Messrs Vattenfall have offered to contribute £44,000 per annum to a community fund. This money will be distributed for the benefit of the local communities most likely through the parish councils Over the course of the last 6 months Vattenfall have held regular community engagement events to understand the most equitable way to distribute the fund. In addition South Kilworth has had representation on regular steering group meetings to fine tune the potential fund distribution options. This group is now approaching a final stage of agreement - subject to a draft contract being provided by Vattenfall for review of the parishes Over the next 6 months the Parish council will agree the final terms of its share of the fund. In addition a contract with Vattenfall will be agreed and signed to ensure the regular annual payments to the parish council are made.

BEHALF OF COUNCIL Highways/footpaths The verges on North Road have been cut back. ST to speak to HDC to see if Welford Road and North Road could be swept and the trees and paths cut back from the carriageway. ST is also to see if the gullies could be emptied. Still waiting for this to be completed Traffic calming to be discussed when Windfarm money is allocated – this would not be an approved way of spending funds from the windfarm developer as it replaces other council tax funds Dog Lane repairs – have now been carried out Since the Welford Road traffic diversions the condition of the edges are in a dangerous state of repair. ST has spoken to Rod Hook (Mount Sorrell now not croft) who has said once the weather improves he will be pulling the verges back with more soil and seeds if necessary fill in any large potholes.
