Received funding in 2007 from the Defense Language Institute to initiate development of a two-year online completion degree program in global studies

During 2008-2009, developed the online degree program, selected and trained faculty, developed 12 learning modules for DLI

With the move to D2L, faculty will be trained and develop their online course materials over the coming year

The GSO program is targeting current community college students

Field visits to likely sending campuses have been initiated this Fall

Pending final approval, the first cohort of 30-35 students will be admitted this coming June

Silicon Valley Center for Global Innovation and Immigration

In 2008 deans Novak and Hegstrom agreed to merge the two proposals for research units into one, to be called the SVCGII.

Funding would come from the two colleges, Global Studies, and a grant requested from Congress

After a lengthy period of approval, the SVCGII began operations in spring 2009, with a symposium on immigration.

Bridging Borders II

SJSU professors took part in a major study of immigrants in Santa Clara County in 2000

SVCGII is exploring the possibility of doing a follow-up study, focusing more on research questions from faculty members

Virtually Abroad Program

IES launched the VAP in 2009 to support faculty in developing virtual links between students at SJSU and students at international universities

Four grants were made for courses in psychology, economics, industrial design, and hospitality

Through team projects, blogs, wikis, video conferencing and faculty visits students in these classes have an opportunity to interact with and learn from students from Guatemala, Spain, China and Taiwan
