Welcome to the6th Form at MAPAt the Marine Academy we pride ourselves on having a 6th Form course for every student leaving Year 11.

We have a wide choice of traditional A Levels as well as BTEC level 3 subjects and vocational options.

Each student can expect a dedicated c o u r s e d e l i v e r i n g a r a n g e o f

pathways and employability.

We provide wrap-around care for students and ensure that all students can aspire to a fulf i l l ing future whether students are contemplating an Apprenticeship, further training or Higher Education.

Being able to capitalise on the resources of our sponsors , the Plymouth University and Cornwall College, puts us in a unique position within the city of Plymouth.

Students will start their 6th Form studies working at the most appropriate level, but at all times we have the highest expectations of students’ abilities and their potential to achieve.

Some of our students will start the 6th Form on Level 2 courses knowing that the following year they can progress onto Level 3 courses, making Higher Education attainable. Some students

occupational courses in areas such C a t e r i n g , H a i r & B e a u t y a n d

Childcare. Our partnership with Cornwall College means that we are able to offer a specialised suite of courses in Construction, including Engineering, Plumbing and Electro- technical studies.

All students will have the opportunity to develop their business acumen and entrepreneurial skills through an additional Business accreditation and workskills course.

Being a 6th Form student brings with it lots of opportunities for new social activities and 6th Formers joining us in 2013 will benefit from a brand new, purpose-built 6th Form Centre.

MAP 6th Form students enjoy a new level of independence because we understand that this is an exciting step on a student’s future journey.

Level 3 Courses including A’ levelsStudents can choose from a broad range of Level 3 c o u r s e s , i n c l u d i n g Nationals, OCR, BTECs and A’levels. All students must choose three subjects but some students may take on four.

Whilst a few students may t a k e a v e r y t r a d i t i o n a l A’level route, in most cases students wil l choose from a w i d e r a n g e o f L e v e l 3 courses which best suit the i n d i v i d u a l , e n s u r i n g a s u c c e s s f u l p a t h w a y t o higher education, training and employment.

All Level 3 courses have a clear equivalence in UCAS points.

T h e s e 2 1 s t c e n t u r y q u a l i f i c a t i o n s m e e t t h e needs of a 21st century world, where there is an increasingly sophist icated employment market which demands a wide range of transferable ski l ls.

M a n y o f t h e L e v e l 3 q u a l i f i c a t i o n s h a v e a n e m p h a s i s o n a p p l i e d learning and are extremely

relevant to the world of work and to on-going high level training.

S t u d e n t s i n t e n d i n g t o p r o g r e s s t o s t u d y i n g a t

pos t -16 p rogramme that prepares them for Higher Education.

The process begins in Year 1 2 a n d s t u d e n t s a r e s u p p o r t e d w i t h H i g h e r Education applications by W i d e n i n g P a r t i c i p a t i o n staff f rom the Univers i ty, w i th whom MAP has an e x t r e m e l y c l o s e col laborat ion as part of our Sponsors’ commitment to the Academy. W e r e c o g n i s e t h e inc reas ing ly compet i t i ve n a t u r e o f u n i v e r s i t y admissions and so our post - 1 6 c u r r i c u l u m b u i l d s i n guided mentoring sessions to enable students to make t h e m o s t o f t h e i r a c h i e v e m e n t s i n t h e i r applications.

Many students choose to study in Plymouth and MAP s t u d e n t s a r e i n t h e advantageous posit ion of not only being famil iar with the univers i ty as part of their working l ife at MAP but also of being able to apply for bursaries given by the univers i ty for our students. Of course we also support students in making the right choice for t h e m , w h e t h e r t h a t ’ s studying at home or away.

Creative Arts Create your future...Pursuing Creative Arts at Post-16 is the beginning of something new and exciting, combining an exciting range of arts subjects in a fantastic environment.

MAP offers students the opportunity to follow a pathway exclusively in the arts aimed at supporting and inspiring them to reach their full potential in their chosen art form.

Students can choose any combination of the subjects listed here. Students will become part of a supportive ‘family’ of students who will be offered exciting opportunit ies, including leadership awards in the arts with the aim of

move on to h igher educat ion or employment.

The Creative Arts approach is to inspire students to take on real tasks that mirror the world of the creative industries through performances and exhibitions.

We will support and guide students into producing work in a professional manner, in a professional environment, always aiming to present work of the highest standard possible.

The creative arts is a highly competitive area of the economy that offers many opportunities for highly motivated and skilled young people, it is our aim to ensure that students are given every opportunity to move into this world and be equipped to compete with the best.

MAP already has good relationships with a range of arts providers in and around Plymouth, such as the Theatre Royal, the Barbican Theatre and Plymouth College

of Art as well as the university; students

of these relationships and partnerships.

The Marine Academy enables students to progress on to careers in the maritime industry, through Science, Maths, Sports and Business Studies.

Marine Academy Plymouth 2013 Students who are interested in the marine industries are provided with an opportunity to gain high level qualifications based around this diverse industry.

The Marine Academy has established links with the Plymouth University and the marine industry, ensuring students have clear progression pathways into further a n d h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n a n d / o r employment.

Sport & Leadership A different way of life...

A’Level equivalence courses will be from the following:

Examples of additional courses and accreditation that can also be achieved through studying Sport and public services:

Sport is a very popular Post-16 choice at the Marine Academy and each year several students progress on to study sport at higher education level.

In the UK sport and exercise is a rapidly growing industry with lots of career opportunities.

For students who complete their GCSEs in June who are looking for Level 3 courses, and are considering a career in the sport industry, our two year course is an exciting next step.

Students will achieve three A level equivalent qualifications as well as additional awards that wil l benefit students who want to work in the sport industry.

Sport students follow a course that is designed to prepare them for progression to university level education or for the sport and surf industry.

Many students choose to combine a study of Sport with a study of public services in preparation for joining one of the armed forces or another public service.

Enterprise and BusinessProsperity depends on enterprise...

Studying business at post-16 is a popular choice at the Marine Academy where an emphasis is placed upon business skills and creativity.

Within Business, students complete a range of activities, from in-depth study of a business to recommending to their parents what to do with an unexpected windfall of £15,000. Invest in shares, start a business, pay off debt or put the money into a savings account? What would you do?

Other modules include: Customer Service, Business Communications, Marketing and Practical Sales Skills. In total, students follow either a six or 12 module business programme. Assessment of work is through varied portfolio assignments.

The Travel and Tourism and Health and Social Care industries are growing in the UK, and the South West offers many

give students an insight and valuable experience which can be developed by further study or in preparation for employment.

Several enterprising extra-curricular projects happen in the 6th Form for which Enterprise Academy students will get priority, such as Young Enterprise, Young Chambers and Shares4Schools. Every year one student is selected to represent their academy, and indeed their country, at a Global Young Leader’s Conference held in New York and Washington DC.

Enterprising students follow a course that is designed to prepare them for progression to university education or for greater

employability in the ever competitive world of work. The major advantage for Business students is that these

will be valued by any Admissions Tutor or employer.

Vocational CoursesLevel 1 & 2 courses

Vocational/Occupational CoursesS t u d e n t s w h o w i s h t o p u r s u e a vocational or occupational route in the VI Form are able to succeed on many Level 2 courses.

S tudents w i l l be able to pursue vocational courses in diverse areas such as Hair and Beauty, Childcare, Catering and Motor Vehicle. Some of these courses will be delivered on site while other specialist areas will be delivered by Cornwall College. There will be a strong emphasis on work-related learning and employability and every student will have work experience built into their course.

A core part of the curriculum in the Academy will be the chance to re-sit Maths and English GCSEs if required. This allows students to personalise their studies, for their needs, for their own futures. Alternatively students can take a qualification in Functional Skills Literacy and Numeracy.

Our unique partnership with Cornwall College and Plymouth University creates huge opportunities for students to progress into fur ther and h igher education.

S t u d e n t s c a n p r o g r e s s o n t o apprenticeships and they will have the opportunity to develop the valuable skills that employers are looking for in today’s modern work force.

Brand new facilities...The brand new Post-16 Centre is a key part of the vision for MAP as the academy builds the confidence and ambitions of its young people. 

The designated Post-16 Centre will provide a separate facility for our Post -16 students to study, to meet with tutors and to socialise and relax.  All areas will be interactive and provide facilities for independent study.  

MAP is committed to preparing students for independent, adult life and therefore our students are fully involved with the whole college and the wider community. 

Our students are role models and leaders across every aspect of academy life; they act as mentors, support teaching and learning in the lower school, the primary school and in the nursery. 

They are elected ambassadors in the wider, political life of the city and they a r e a c t i v e a n d v o c a l i n t h e leadership of the academy as a whole, meeting with the Principal, the Senior Leadership Team and with governors in order to share views on how to broaden and deepen the student experience.
