SACRED HEART PARISH WELCOMES YOU
Dear Parishioner,
May is a month in the church’s liturgical calendar when we honor the memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary so this is the Sunday for May Crowning. Every spring we ask Mary to intercede during the growing season so that we may have abundant crops. We crown her image as we do this.
A significant event happened last week when we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Pope Francis traveled to Portugal to canonize two of the children who saw the apparitions of Mary there in 1917. As is often the case he emphasized in this visit to Fatima ideas that are important to him as he teaches Catholicism.
First, he reminded everyone that Mary appeared to three peasant children out tending sheep. When Mary reveals herself, it is most often to the poor and powerless. If we want to imitate her discipleship our Marian piety should revolve around a desire that justice be achieved for those who are in the greatest need. We think of all the women, children and men throughout the world who flee for their lives in war zones across the globe.
The Pope also reminded everyone of Mary as patroness of peace. Mary appeared during the horrors of the First World War. People were questioning their believe in a loving God as they saw the hell of war played out as millions of people were slaughtered for no apparent reason. Our Marian piety needs to include a Peace and Justice thrust or it is not very dynamic. Marian devotions like all prayers should lead to action.
Mary is our mother. Mothers love us and challenge us to be better people. We pray that we may become better peace makers as we ponder Mary the Patroness of Peace.
Blessings, Fr. Mark

The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your
plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things
are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don’t get the
result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many
times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything
right! Here’s the thing – God has a different and better plan in
store for you.

Charity 2017 Birdies For Charity
Again this year, Sacred Heart Parish will be seeking your donations and pledges for this year’s Birdies For Charity 2017. Sacred Heart receives 100% of every donation made in its name, plus at least a 5% match provided by John Deere. Brochures were mailed and are available at all the church doors or call the Parish Office: 309-762-2362.
What an easy way to support your home
parish!
Church Tuck-Pointing Continues Masons have been tuck pointing the north and south side of our bell tower the last two weeks. Last year we did the east and west sides from top to bottom. We are also trying to address water damage that is occurring in the choir loft. There are drainage issues with the tower that cause leaking. Louvers on the top of the tower also need to be reattached. They were “nailed” on 100 years ago and they are falling off. We hope that by the end of the work we will have made the bell tower more structurally sound and will have stopped the leaking. Then we can move on to other maintenance. Thanks to all who donated to the Heart to Heart Fund. These monies allow us to do capital projects. There will be more work in other areas this summer. We will keep everyone informed.
Bishop Jenky Conducts Planning Study to Hear from You The Diocese of Peoria will be conducting a planning study under the guidance of Bishop Daniel Jenky and would like to hear from you. The study will gather your opinions on a potential diocesan wide capital campaign and your participation is needed so that the Bishop can make an informed decision on whether to move forward. The Steier Group, a Catholic development and fundraising firm from Omaha has been hired to conduct the study over the next three months. Potential campaign elements to be addressed include: strengthening our parishes, increasing support for vocations and seminarians, investing in our schools, new approaches in discipleship, religious education and faith formation, attention to our growing Hispanic population and food for the poor and underserved. Parishioners will have access to a fact sheet that will detail these identified needs and will be asked to respond either in personal interviews, mail surveys or online questionnaires. Everyone’s opinion is important, so continue to look for more information in upcoming
bulletins.
