STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITY The Proto-Cathedral has a newly formed Health

Following in the steps of Jesus, we will endeavor to support our parish community through carefully designed programs, such as Health Fairs, health professional speakers, nutrition and exercise information, outreach care for the homebound, support groups, and much more. We will meet once per month to determine the needs of the parish community and utilize the strength of the parishioners within it to create dynamic programs. DID YOU KNOW? Three years after Ver-mont legalized assisted suicide, pro-lifers are be-ginning to witness the abusive effects of the law on the elderly and disa-bled. Mary Beerworth, executive director of Vermont Right to Life, shared the story of a 91-year-old woman who was staying in a rehab facility because she broke her wrist. When her family was not in the room, Beerworth said rehab staff repeatedly asked the elderly woman if she was in pain or depressed; then they would remind her that she could commit doctor-prescribed suicide under the new law. Beer-worth said the woman never was diagnosed with a terminal illness; she just was old and had a broken bone….Coercion and abuse are major problems in states where assisted sui-cide is legal. Beerworth said the Vermont legislation makes it worse by requiring that every person diagnosed with a terminal illness be told that they can commit assisted sui-cide with a doctor’s prescription.
Pro-lifers are working with other groups across the coun-try to protect the vulnerable from assisted suicide and have been successful in stopping many assisted suicide bills. The pro-life community is not alone in this fight. Disa-bility rights, mental health advocates, elder abuse advo-cates, faith communities, medical and nursing professionals and others are working together to defeat this dangerous legislation, the panelists said.
